Who else finds beta stuff in video games fascinating as fuck?

I remember as a kid seeing magazine scans of Super Mario RPG, and then wondering why those things never showed up in the actual game. It always made me wonder what could have been. Same thing with Zelda OoT.

For me, the idea of an early version of a game suddenly getting leaked is one of the things that excites me the most. The sheer possibility of getting to look at and even play with an early, alpha or beta version of a game before it changed into what we know today is one I wish would happen more often.

So yeah, discuss retro video game beta leaks, prototypes, and other stuff that was covered in media but was then changed later on for release.

>> No.428334

Related to this, here's an awesome site that documents content that is still in the actual game ROMs but was cut, removed, or replaced by what is currently in the final game:

http://tcrf.net/The_Cutting_Room_Floor

A lot of stuff that is shown in pre-release promotional material for games that was later cut tends to actually still be in the game's code in some form or another, from unused tiles or collision maps to entire levels.

What are the chances that devs still have early builds of their games stored away in some computer or something? I know several prototypes and beta builds have been leaked many times. A recent example is the RE2 beta, which is incomplete and glitchy but still interesting as hell.

I always fantasize about somehow a very early version of OoT getting leaked on the internet. The sheer thought of it gives me a stiffy. I wouldn't give a fuck if it was bugged to shit. I'd still jack off to the early models untextured models and shit.

To this day people on Japanese message boards mention the location tests of Darkstalkers 2 and all the weird stuff that was in it. Pic related, this is what Donovan's Blizzard Sword move looked like. It would fall down from the top of the screen, sort of like Anakaris's Sarcophagus drop move.

>> No.428381

This one's awesome, because we actually ended up with several leaks. The first one was pretty unfinished and buggy, but later on we got a nearly finished build that just required a bit of patching to make it a fully playable game. Aside from the lack of multiplayer, it was for all intents and purposes the game that would have been released. And it is pretty damn good.

He could use it in the finished game, but it behaved completely differently. Instead of causing his sword to fall down from the top of the screen covered in ice like in the location test the finished game has him shoot out a snowflake that travels forward in a shallow arc. Apparently the location test version was way too powerful/abusable.

>'m curious about more Darkstalkers/Vampire Savior location test stuff. What else was different?
Here's what I can remember offhand:
-The Blizzard Sword thing I already mentioned (graphics for it still exist unused in the final game, pic related)
-When Donovan sent his sword flying it would spin end over end instead of horizontally, so it covered a much wider area (again, animation and hitboxes still exist unused in the data). I've also heard that instead of always flying in the direction Donovan was facing, you could force it to fly left, right, or upwards depending on what button you pressed.
-Doonovan's Change Immortal super did a huge amount of chip damage when blocked. I've also heard that you could freely control his flight, as opposed to the limited vertical control you have in the finished version.
-Huitzil's Final Guardian super involved him summoning another robot, which would turn into a cannon that he would stand behind and fire. The other robot would then fly off. This made the startup and recovery times really long, so they changed it to just make Huitzil himself turn into the cannon. You can see the summon version in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjTZ_IcQ4Lg There's also an unused animation that exists in the data where he combines with the support robot and gains a some shoulder cannons which then fire. Don't know if that was ever used in a build anyone outside of Capcom played, though.
-When Victor's powerup super was active, his medium and hard punches would shoot out lightning bolts that traveled across the screen. You can also see this in the aforementioned video.
-Rikuo's bubble move was originally a shield instead of an attack. The bubble would surround him and protect him from projectiles and throws.

It's worth noting that the hanged cat graphics are in the same CHR bank as (and line up perfectly with) the large bird that carries you across gaps midway through the game, so the two were likely connected at some point. The hanged Bop-Louie is also stored in a nearby bank, and may be part of the same scenario.

OoT has a veritable fucking treasure trove of beta stuff. Off the top of my head, there were Ice and Wind Temples instead of Water and Forest, the Medallions were going to be used as spells like Din's Fire (hence the Fire Medallion symbol on that pedestal you use Din's Fire on to enter the Shadow Temple), I think Hyrule Castle and its sewers were accessible at an early point (being the basis of the Forest Temple and the Well)...

I'm led to believe it started off as either a prequel (explaining the Imprisoning War) or a remake of ALttP.

Most of OoT's unused and planned features were implemented in MM and TWW, like the indepth character interaction, the Wind Temple, the plotline about Sages restoring the Master Sword's power, and so on.

TWW has some interesting beta stuff as well, but it's not exactly /vr/ so I won't dwell on that.

Also, Castle Town was going to be a fully 3D explorable town rather than the prerendered circle it ended up being, and there was a sword beam at some point.
http://www.odysseyofhyrule.com/zelda.htm and http://tcrf.net/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time cover most of it.

There's also a project by some guys who are making a ROM hack of OoT, sort of taking all the beta elements and using them to make an entirely new plotline and stuff. But there's been a trailer promised for like a year, and it's been delayed about 5 times (once because the main guy working on it's entire family died or something), so I don't know how legit it is, but they do have some videos and concept art done. http://uraproject.the-gcn.com/

The final version of Soul Reaver was only half of the originally intended game. Entire areas, powers, enemys etc were removed. For example, the human citadel would've had some point to it and had a huge underground area, the elemental reavers you can only get through cheat codes would have actually been used and had their own puzzles, you would have been able to possess enemies, the list goes on.

Also I remember those early OoT screens that looked more like Mario 64, with the red Octoroks.

>tfw we'll never see what those knights were in the OP pic

Such an ominous shot, that one. Those enemies are nowhere in the final game data, and AFAIK they have never been acknowledged.

Oh god, I really, really want to see a super early prototype of Mario RPG get leaked.

Yeah, the "Zelda HD experience". It's essentially a shot of TP Link fighting TP Armogohma, with fancy Wii U graphics.

I know, man. I know. What really gets me is that the boat tells you that the temples you need to go to are in Hyrule... but because of Ganon's bullshit barrier, you have to enter them through the mountains.
Sometimes I just stand in the temples, thinking that I'm a few metres away from Hyrule Field or Kakariko Village or wherever. It's a weird feeling.

I really, really wish this gets leaked someday. Even a single different stage will be great. (I'd kill for any unplayed 16-bits MMX material, and the few good fangames are taking forever to get completed)

This is true. Timber was intended for Twelve Tales, and he was gonna be a quadraped. This was probably before Diddy Kong Racing though. Tiptup was featured in Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie and that was it. The only other character I can see getting something is Bumper. Him, Timber, Diddy, Banjo and Conker look like potental protags. The rest were supporting characters at best.

Sonic games have a lot of beta stuff. Pic related. I wanted Madonna so badly.

Yet another thing I saw in magazines back in the day wishing I could play it. FFVI was my favorite game at the time. I had dreams about this shit. Then FFVII went to the PS1 and I completely missed out on it because I was a Nintendo fanboy. I even remember sending a letter to Nintendo asking them if there would ever be another FF game on a Nintendo console.
