What went wrong with Gex? Why did the series die?

He always struck me as a more sophisticated character than Crash (lol he's orange and spins!), Spyro (lol he's purple and a bit sarcastic sometimes!) and many other of his contemporaries who are still around.

>> No.4279529

Nothing significant stands out about him, especially at the time, and he was the mascot of a DoA console.

Same reasoning behind the (not-retro) Jak series continuously changing genre. Gex has no real identity.

I liked the first and third games. Gex 2 was meh.

Can you imagine how awful a modern day Gex would be? If the old ones were ripe with eye-rollingly bad TV references, a new one would probably be full of cringey internet memes.

Can't wait to play the Game of Thrones level.

>> No.4279553

Tropes and cheap one-liners can take a series only so far. It doesn't help that Enter the Gecko had one of the worst camera systems in the history of 3D gaming.

>Why did the series die?
Gex was made during the height of television mania and the in-your-face programming. His entire premise relied on both trends to continue past the late 90's, but they ended up becoming more tame in what they aired. The Internet also had a hand in taking over the entertainment industry.

It just wouldn't be the same if we had a modern Gex game. What's he going to reference or quote? Internet memes? Kingpin from the latest season of Daredevil? There's just so few ideas that work with him well in context unless you changed his concept completely, and it's been proven time and time again that never works well with long time fans.

It's better to treat him as the passing trend he was rather than to bastardize the work the devs put into franchise.

Even if the series came back, people would say it's just a Family Guy platformer.

No that would be the whole point of a new Gex. He would still be making those dated 90's references, and the whole game would be him shitting on modern culture. It would be the epitome of "only 90's kids remember" cringe humor

Deep Cover Gecko wasn't really about TV.

Every world was more of a movie genre and one of the bosses was a movie reference outright.

Let's take stock of Gex's worlds.

Gex 3D had a cartoon world, a horror world, a kung fu world, a prehistoric channel with a history channel name pun, a sci fi world and two worlds that were just based on the inside of a television, a circuitry world and a static, wire filled world.

There is plenty to work with. They should just let this series die though because the writing was fucking horrible.

Only played that demo taking place in the Halloween themed level. The ambiance was cool but I was only interested by this creepy theme, not the rest.

Doesn't Square own the IP now? I'm sure you could get some mileage out of spoofing Advent Children or Spirits Within. I don't know if it would be GOOD, but the option is there.

I always preferred the original 2D Gex. Was a pretty fun platformer, better than Rayman IMO. Never bothered with FULLY MODELED sequels.
