Castlevania was always a disappointment. Especially for kids that didn't have a Playstation but knew what Symphony of the Night was.

Even if you thought the gameplay was good, the game itself was unfinished. Legacy of Darkness was a little better.

I would say the best place to look is in old gaming mags. If you can find issues of EGM, GamePro, Game Informer and Nintendo Power that have reviews for Castlevania 64 you could see what the average rating was.

I was a pretty hardcore gamer while those magazines were in their prime and gamepro in particular had very accurate reviews. Over the years I cannot think of one instance where a terrible game was shilled into a strongly positive review. Gampro very rarely gave out perfect scores and when they did the game genuinely earned it. I stpped reading game magazines after 99/2000 so I can't really say if things changed after that, but early on the reviews were legit.

NHL 94 got solid 5s across the board (out of 5) and blew everyone away at the time, and to this day it is still one of the greatest sports games of all time. It was like 4 months before a copy could even be found on the shelf to rent.

Gamepro shit all over superman or castlevania 64 and rightfully so. Castlevania got a 2 out of 5 an after playing it I strongly agreed.
