Was Xenogears' story pretentious?

>> No.4278291

I don't think there was anything really to be pretentious about in it desu

>> No.4278301

there are too many lighthearted and goofy bits for it too be pretentious, I think it was put together out of genuine interest in the Jungian ideas

>> No.4278303

it's the Deus Ex of jRPGs, it's hilariously memeworthy and red pilled at the same time

>redpilled
>dude organized religion and social hierarchy are bad lmao
>rebel against your creator because fuck the police
>oh yeah and here's some vague references to psychology and the occult because we want the Eva audience

It's a big mistake to think goofiness and pretentiousness never go together.

>> No.4278381

When it comes to writing and plot, people on 4chan are extremely superficial. Writing is either "good" or "bad" with no in between, things are either "stupid" or "pretentious", and no one can explain why or why not.

>> No.4278382

>>4278303
what a memetic statement

>> No.4278391

Yes, but that flaw could have been greatly mitigated had they been given the resources to actually finish the goddamned game.

As it stands, I don't get the appeal unless you've got a serious "What if...?" fetish.

>> No.4278404

it's interesting, but poorly told and paced

Dunno, it's an unfinished mess.

The only "jews" would've been the gazel council, since they were literally god's chosen people and controlled everything from behind the scenes. Solarians were more like western colonialists if we're looking for allegories.

The translation for the xenogears bible is abysmal.

There was a guy like 10 years ago who was doing an actual fan-translation instead of this machine garbage but he did only one chapter or something. Long gone.
Then all of a sudden a "full" translation appears and it's no better than Babelfish.

That's one way to put it.

you didn't fully understand the main point of xenogears, it was deeply spiritual despite its criticism of organized religion, and promoted faith and the belief in God as positive things people should strive for. This is partly expressed in Jesiah's quote to Billy where Billy is in doubt over his faith after realizing his religion is a sham, "faith and God aren't given to you, they are found within yourself - your strong faith allowed you to end the suffering of the Reapers/Wels, and that proves God is within you!" This is hardly trying to convey a "dude rebel against your creator" view as you think. The "you kill god in the end" sentiment that gets tossed around here is a total meme since it's a false god. So the true message is something like: God can't be given to you on a silver platter through organized religion, but he does exist and the only way you will find him is within yourself

The problem with this was that the Dave Existence is only sprung on you in the final few hours of the game, and even then was betrayed by the translation.

Like other anons have mentioned, it's overly ambitious, but to call it "pretentious" would be calling everything that it's referencing "pretentious" as well.

It's an amusing attempt to reference (or be a love letter to) /m/ culture, but it's quite clearly overreaching, even as is, and unfinished.

>>4278289
A little bit, but that doesn't make it irredeemably terrible or anything.

>> No.4284884

>Memesters online told me that you kill god at the end
>It's just some out of control AI

It was more like Chrono Trigger and killing Lavos. The symbolism and references to real-world religions were nearly pointless. I think the interactions between the characters and their dialogue is great but the story itself is a mixture of nonsense and brilliance
