4277842 No.4277842 [Reply] [Original]

One day, all this cheap plastic shit will be gone. It'll have broken down, melted, turned to dust. All we'll have left is emulation.

>> No.4277852

>>4277842
This, I went to emulation a few years back for older stuff, and haven't looked back since. New stuff, yeah, I'll get a PSwhatevernumberitisnow and a Switch for that cute Zelda butt, but emulation is the way to go for everything older, and primarily for the reason you mentioned. Of course, now there's a single point of failure (my HDD/computer), but at least my stuff is almost all in one place now. Also, backups are good.

Or maybe you can let it go, and find a real hobby. Create something of value instead of just wallowing in the past.

We need to prepare for the end. Dump all of the games, write all of the emulators, and remove all of the DRM.

But there's no reason to stop using the originals yet. We're not that far gone.

I get that imagining that there are lots of really interesting games out there just waiting to be discovered is a nice fantasy that keeps some people's interest in the hobby alive, but the truth is most of the stuff out there is basically worthless half-finished shit, early versions of games that we already have, or half-assed ports. Fat PS3s with 4 USB ports have varying amounts of PS2 hardware in them for backwards compatibility. A large selection of PS2 games are on the PSN and work on all PS3s though. All models of PS3 can play PS1 game discs from the respective region of the console.

There's a seller that sells pre-moded PS3, so it should be on 4.81 CFW, right?

Also what about those sites that claim you can play PS2 on PS3 other than the old fat model?

>> No.4285821

No, they're basically time-bombs. You can repair a fat PS3 100 times and it will overheat and break a 101st time. They're a poorly designed machines, the Slim and Super Slim are the only PS3s worth having. If you want to mod a PS3, you're going to have a very, very difficult time finding one that basically hasn't been connected to the Internet since launch.
>>4285768
>PS2 on PS3 other than the old fat model?
There's a lot of good PS2 games on the PSN, but they aren't free. Any site saying it's doable without just buying the PSN games is straight-up lying.

I got insanely lucky and found a Phat ps3 on firmware 3.somethingorother from a flea market a few years ago that was only used for sports and party games. It was worth the hassle of bringing a 13 inch flat screen to the store and checking the system info. Got some weird looks thogh

It's simply unlikely you'll find a PS3 that was never updated, you might, but you probably won't. My advice would be to check your local gamestop inventories using their website, I got one that way, but it was basically broken so I had to return it. The Slim and Super Slim cannot run PS2 discs, it's a hoax. It's handful of PSN PS2 games or nothing on both Slims, or even fat PS3s that have fewer than 4 USB ports.

Yes and no.

Yes and no.
>They're a poorly designed machines
Yes and no. They're actually very robust, is the PCB size and the cooling profiles that make them more prone to failure.

Simple stuff like replacing the stock cooling pads and paste will add 15 years to the life of the console.

Putting on CFW with a fan control plugin that doesn't let the console go below 68C will make it last until the fan bearings seize up.

The stock fat PS3s have a gigantic 6 layer motherboard that flexes, shrinks and warps as it heats and cools, and it can loosen the RSX and Cell chips over time.

A proper fan profile prevents this.

Citation needed in a few more years. More parts to break != more robust design. There's a reason they redesigned it twice.

No. I don't think so. I believe that the stuff that was made back in the day was actually made to last forever, whereas the stuff that is made today is made to break a couple of years after constant use so that you have to buy a new one. So electronics are becoming cheaper and last a shorter time, just so that these fine gentlemen in their lovely suits can make some money of us.
