A high end Pentium 3 would work way better
Also, only one sound card? I want A3D and EAX, both
Plus a set of Voodoo 2's

why?
if you can afford proper hardware, then why buy the p4? its only good because its cheaper on jewbay
pretty hipster excuse though as good p3 bodes cost pennies here

There are patches that enable windows 95 to run with higher than the max CPU (which I think was a pentium 3?)

There's no need though. Pentium 3 will be fine for Win9x games.
Pentium 4's will have more compatibility issues then it's worth, no real performance improvement if you already have a good AGP card.
Even though OPs chipset is pretty Win9x friendly, you will run into other problems with proper 3dfx compatibility if you want to use Voodoo 2's, etc.

OP, disregard the naysayers. I've got more or less the same set-up as you and it plays nearly everything my Pentium 200MMX does with the exception of a few games that were compiled with TurboPascal that can be easily patched.

For anything it can't run, neither can the 200MMX, you need a 486 or start disabling caches and underclocking your CPU.

We are talking about a Win9x games machine not DOS.
Pentium 4 for DOS is a bigger disaster than it is for Windows 9x games.

>> No.4277817

>>4276410
Anything that won't run on a Pentium 4 in DOS will also not run on anything past 200mhz. Win9x is barely a problem either, chipset drivers exist, AGP Video Card driver support is good. I hate Pentium 4's desu but they are cheaper than building a Slot 1 or Socket 370 rig and no worse except if you want to use older AGP cards like the Voodoo 3.

Not sure why you'd bother, the OS needs to support hyperthreading to use it.

I had something somewhat sketched out years ago...
Athlon 64 FX-57 + Radeon 9800
Board has to be something with a VIA chipset, cause the nForce ones have problems with 98.
Never got around to buy the components, tho.

Would've been awesome. I think that's also the limit you can go to with official driver support.
After that it's trail and error. With hacking you can also make Core 2 Duos or Core i5, but it's still hit or miss with the boards...

Don't workstation cards perform worse in games than equivalent gaming cards because drivers aren't optimized for gaming?

You use a 486 for DOS. With turbo.

It's still shittier then a proper Pentium 3 build for Windows 9x gaymes.
So yes,the _only_ argument is that you don't want to spend money on proper hardware.

Why? It's a DOS machine, you won't have a 1280x1024 monitor anyways, just a nice VESA 1024x768 one.
Maybe you should stick to emulation and source ports.

There you go, you have a good retro gayman pc that should run just about anything from the mid to late 90s, and won't be a huge power consumer or space heater.
