Actually this FF had the best atmosphere. Almost every ff feels like you are in your default anime tier party, whereas FF II (JAP) makes you feel you are acually part of a rebel army.

Characters were not as edgy as you would expect in a FF. The quests in the game, instead of feeling just as "independent adventures inside a huge quests" made sense in the context.

Horrorgames usually have thick athmosphere, but d2 stands out because if I remember right it has no music aside from some scary jingles. You will hear the cold wind and or the other sounds of the locations. I love it.

ANd finally the best game on this planet (because I love games with athmosphere and this one got the best plus everything else is perfect in this game, story, characters, writing etc): Vampire the masquerade bloodlines.

This games athmosphere is so good, that it easily replaces the real world for me when I play it. Why is that, first the sound design is great. I love the droning of you hear of far away ventilation machines in the city, the far harbor noises in the harbor city, the rain, the music you can hear outside and inside bars. The voice acting is outstanding. The game teaches good real life lessons, has alot of tension, excellent reveals that don't take away from everything else, the games world has sexappeal and hidden beauty aswell as uglyness, sickness, love and hate. The game has no stupid characters that would take you out of the game. Even most basic peasents have good writing and arguments. The only patch the game needs is the patch that fixes the crash after the cave escape. There is horror and snuff that makes you think about what you just watched (maybe if you played the game as many times as me). Best game... standing on top of the malkavian mansion and watching the cars dive in the night is just beautiful.

Yeah I wanted to post thief and unreal too. Glad someone else already did. Unreals athmosphere is fantastic. It's so odd its related to unreal tournament. Of course it's the same game (same weapons and characters) but that the single player game would be so bizarre and deep (long and make you feel something) was a real nice suprise.

Never had a problem with tank controls myself but Resi and Silent Hill were the games I gravitated towards after my 8 and 16 bit years so that's inevitable I suppose.
I wouldn't say Silent Hill's atmosphere was better as much as it was just different. Silent Hill did a claustrophobic, cloying, nasty atmosphere great but Resi had a kind of comfiness to it what with the save rooms and generally calming tunes.

For anyone not in the know, the n64 version of nightmare creatures lacked CD quality sound (no shit) but also lacked a lot of levels and the controls sucked ass.

It may have lacked more, but I never spent enough time with it to try out then teats or look around every level completely,so idk.
Its the hands down, absolute worst version of the game though.
