So I've played 1 - 8, but dropped 2 due to my irritation at having the monsters reinforce all the time.

Did anybody like this game? Was I doing it wrong? Is there a way to make it fun or was leaving it behind the right move?

Also, is 9 in a playable state?

My alternative is to switch to Ultima VII.

As far as I know, it's some difficult shit messing with random map templates. I recommend trying them out and finding out ones you like. Frozen Dragons is a personal favourite.

Here's a link detailing the different templates' town and zone generation rules and I think there's a link to some editing program. http://forum.heroesworld.ru/showpost.php?p=564869&postcount=57

9 is playable at any patch 1.2 or after. GOG uses 1.3.

With 2 you should turn difficulty to minimum and get items that cast AoE spells to clear out big groups. Duplication will carry over charges and buffs from any items, and if I remember right you don't even need to equip an item to use it, you just lose out on the buffs. The flaming sword from the gemmaker's volcano alone kills 6 at a time and that's 36 a round minus any healing you need to do.

4 dragons is actually a relatively weak party late because other than flame blast their damage is awful due to recovery time never going down.

Most fun party is probably KKKCS or KKKKC. CRAG SMASH!

>How early should i be building a second level mage guild?
When your level 7 dwelling is done along with all the crucial upgrades (Gremlins for Tower).
>. I'm assuming you'd upgrade sooner with a magic hero.
Not really. Magic heroes mostly have a purpose in the early game in spamming Magic Arrow with high Spell Power or one of their innate level 4 spells (Deemer, Solmyr) to rush/clear. The only level 2 spell that really helps this playstyle is either Ice Bolt or Lightning Bolt, and you might not roll either if you're unlucky, which means you sunk costs into something not that great. Blind is also a great spell, but it never goes AoE and it doesn't necessarily unlock the same purpose as the offensive spells, so it's not any better than Mass Slow.

In campaigns you might wanna rush mage guilds if you already start with a large or fast army and all you need to do is sweet spells to seal the deal (Resurrect, Implo, Berserk).

It's unlikely that you will do some unwinnable fights with spells from the 2nd circle that you couldn't with Slow, and you lose a lot of resources and a day of building if you don't manage to get anything good.

Better bank on finding your spells in the numerous Scrolls or Shrines on the map rather than gamble on expanding your Mage Guild this early. Especially since building dwellings lets you stockpile your creatures for later.

However once you have all dwellings you might as well go Mage Guild. You said "by third week", so it might work out - some towns, even on 200%, let you be fully built up by week 3, and some maps (Jebus Cross template) are so ridiculous as to allow Angels in week 1.

Ok, MM3 solo Archer run completed. As expected it was basically trivial once you get Thievery and Teleport. The level, might, and speed fountains will carry you past anything you may need. Since all of those plus hp/sp regeneration are within teleport range of Fountain Head (as such you might as well leave your Lloyd's Beacon here) there really isn't anything that can cause problems. The only things I wiped on more than once for the rest of the game were the Vulture Rocs on the Earth Isle. That wasn't from damage, it was the paralyze effect which solo is an instawipe. With high level Power Shield up you just don't take much damage from anything. Even the terminators were a joke because I had Velocity Gauntlets (which I only brought for the last dungeon) to get my speed past 200 and attacking first. I never found an item of Town Portal, but I didn't need one because the mirrors.

Due to the lack of space to put things, by the end the only things I had equipped for the last 2/3 of the game were my Obsidian Great Axe and Longbow. I had to just discard things that were worth less than 10k the second half of the game because it just isn't worth messing with them. It's not like gold is of any use once you train to 200; all you can do is turn it into experience at the fountain which also does you no good.

Overall it was pretty fun, but kind of anticlimactic because of how powerful Power Shield gets in MM3.

Is magic in the M&M series real, or is it some weird kind of science?

>> No.4274254

>>4273845
Pretty sure this is covered in the MM2 and MM3 manuals. Magic is simply techniques and items for control and suppression of the elementals and elemental forces. Most of it came from the gods (gods elsewhere usually refers to the ancients themselves) so they are more likely advanced technology. The elemental forces themselves are magical, but they can be compelled to do things against their will through what the humanoid races call magic, which is basically the whole storyline of MM8.

>Unable to physically enter CRON and maddened at
the elementals' defeat at the hands of a single, puny human, Acwalandar studied that which defeated him,
magic. He had a great aptitude for sorcery and learned quickly by studying the humanoids who ventured near
his realm. He gained particular skill in forming and summoning. Using this skill, Acwalandar formed a fell
creature of enormous girth and power. He filled it with life from many of his followers and endowed it with the
most fearsome of weapons known to him, fire. He had created the first dragon, a creature of mindless
destruction and incredible strength.

It's kinda funny that elemental lords had to learn magic to break free.

I don't really know what to make out of Terra's lore, the relation between Ancients and Elementals is unclear, aside from that Ancients had the power to subdue them, same as with orb of power in mm2.

I'd like to start the M&M series from the beginning. It seems like the best looking version of Book 1 was on the Turbo CD, and the fan translation stopped around 2010-ish. I think the guy was looking for someone to translate the dumped text.

For English releases, the NES version looks best. I'm afraid of the interface being limited, and any system limitations from the NES.

HoMM6 has some interesting ideas, but generally bad execution. If you really want to check it out you can give it a shot, but there are much better games out there. 7 is a complete disaster and should be avoided at all costs.

9 is still NWC, but it's a complete break from what you expect from the series and was incredibly rushed. Aside from moving to a Norse style lore, there was a full redesign of the spell system including cutting down magic schools to 4, making all spells take 2 schools to learn, and removing Fly and Invisibility. It's playable, but there are far better things to put your time into. 10 is Ubi and it's probably worth playing once if you enjoyed 3-5, but it has absolutely no replay value. It has turn based tile gameplay that works fine and you have short appearances of the Elemental Lords (the NWC ones), but it is incredibly linear and abandons the open world concept until mid to late game.

Yes, your ballista specialist will be weaker at a level 20+ clash of main armies that run into the hundreds than something more specialized, but if you're playing a ballista specalist, you're playing on the strategy that you'll bowl them over either directly or from superior position because you've expanded faster before it comes to that.

You got the formula, but it's not insignificant. Say you have Christian, starting with an attack of 2, that gives a base 6-9 damage from the ballista, which doubles half of the time because of basic artillery. The ballista itself will have an attack of 12. If you're shooting at a horde of 50 unled troglodytes, you're on average doing 16 and a smidge damage per shot. And that ballista will be shooting for a while, it's pretty tough. And when you gain a level or two and some attack, and more importantly advanced artillery, it goes way up as you start shooting twice every round.

No, it's the actual level ups. They always give you the same skills to pick from in each mission and there's only like 3 per mission. Like in the 3rd mission where I am now, 20 is max level and the last one or two levels I got with Tarnum didn't even give me a choice of skill (I still have one free slot) because I had them all maxed, just gave me a primary stat boost as usual and nothing else. I partially get why they do it, they want you to learn all the magics because the whole campaign is about battling the elements, but they really didn't need to force me to pick leadership, navigation and mysticism together with those.

>> No.4299478

Whoops, last part got deleted by accident.
So basically what I was wondering is if this stops in the later levels, so I can refrain from leveling up in the first few or if this continues throughout the whole campaign. But it doesn't matter too much anymore, I made peace with having these 3 skills even though there's a bunch of better ones.

I like the contrast. Stronghold is about strength, and even though its soldiers are a bunch of ugly, savage motherfuckers, they have their own form of dignity.

What I wonder is if the Necromancer and Barbarian's town themes in HoMM2 weren't swapped during development. Their German lyrics seem like they fit better with each other.

Necromancer:
>Your wild, wild dogs want out into freedom;
>they are barking in their cellar with passion,
>when your soul is striving to free all confinements.
>they are barking with passion.

Barbarian:
>Or do you go now alone
>on the Path
>on the Path
>Or do you go now on the Path of Thieves, you Friend of Evildoers?

Though the most likely solution is they just picked random Also Sprach Zarathustra quotes that sounded vaguely evil.

>> No.4309734

It's a reputation system that governs your "class" like Light side and Dark side or Paragon/Renegade. When you get enough blood or tears you unlock a special ability for your hero and filling up the bar again with the same type of points upgrades your class and gives you another ability. So naturally you want to pick one and stick with it.

Whenever roaming monsters try to flee, you can let them go for tears or try to kill them for blood. Casting certain spells also increases your tears/blood as well as certain events in the campaign.

Also each hero combination (Might/Magic from different factions) has different classes and abilities so it's not a clear-cut choice each time.

I used to be really bad too. Here are some very general tips that can help you if you're struggling with the basics.

A) You don't really have a stacking limit except for you can only have 7 different types of creatures in an army. If you have 5 heroes, and 1,000 level 1 dudes, you do NOT want to give them each 200. Give one of them almost all of them, and the rest small numbers of troops; you're a lot stronger in one big force than scattered piecemeal. As a corallary of this, games of HoMM 3 tend to come down to one huge clash between main armies, and the winner takes all, from day 1, you should be preparing for such a clash.

B) That means, among other things, that you should be trying to expand as quickly and as painlessly as possible. At MOST (sans grail) you can have 1 town generating 4,000 gold a turn, and either a rare resource or 1 wood 1 gold. That's nice, but it's not enough, espeically since early game you want to both develop your town and recruit a bunch of creatures, an d running up the gold line takes both time and resources you probably can't afford. Your initial goal should be spent maximizing your firepower in that first week at least, and then using it to clear those stacks of neutral creatures. This does two things. Firstly, it gives you XP for a hero or several heroes, which makes them stronger, especially later in the game. Two, it unlocks many resources and artifacts, which you should be greedily sucking up.

>> No.4313923

>>4311617

C) If you're playing on normal, you're going to start with a fair chunk of cash. You also probably start with a tavern. It's faster and often cheaper to immediately hire 2 new heroes before you do anything else. Not all of them, but quite a few heroes have more than 2,500 gold's worth of troops, and you don't have to do any of that infrastructure building. Remember the above thing about stacking, leave 2 of these guys with 1 first level dingus, and pour the rest into a single hero. Use the main hero to clear stacks, and the other two guys to pick up the resources and flag the mines that you've cleared.

D) If you do a good job clearing things, then you will likely have more resources than you immediately immediately need. You will need to build up the gold buildings eventually, (Unless you can steal them from someone who was foolish enough to rush up to capital while you were building troops) but you should start off with the creature dwellings. Even if you aren't recruiting the creatures therein, they will accumulate; and remember, you're aiming for a confrontation, far in the future, where you've likely turned that corner on wealth and manpower is your main limiting factor. Get the manpower ball rolling, and that first week should be spent more or less entirely building creature dwellings, maybe a level 1 mage guild, and citadels/castles.

E) Upgrades are good, but less useful than you might think. When I started playing, I would build dwelling, upgrade dwelling, build a dwelling, upgrade that one too next turn, etc. I was stupid when I started, don't do that. Build all or at least up to your level 6 dwellings before you think about upgrading in most cases. When you do start upgrading, don't go from start to finish; whatever units you find yourself relying on most, upgrade them first. And when in doubt, upgrade your slowest units first, most upgrades create speed boosts, and upgrading your slowest units will mean your army travels faster overland.

Stronghold and fortress are quite strong in maps they're good for, with low resource counts and people right next to each other. They only really start to fall behind if someone really pulls ahead of them on the magic game with 4 and 5 mage guild levels, but building them up requires at least 18 of each rare resource, 28 to go for level 5, and if whoops, you didn't draw Town Portal, Resurrect, and Summon Elemental of the type of magic your main hero is good with, but instead got Frenzy, Sorrow, and the wrong class of elemental, you've probably wasted that money and time, as well as left you vulnerable for someone who used those resources to upgrade dwellings or just sold them for more troops.

You don't build the crappy 3 and 4. (And their 2s are far superior to the Ramparts), you go straight from goblin barracks to wolf pen to cliff nest to Behemoth cave, if you can get it. You get Behemoths by the end of the first week (easily possible, although by no means assured), and you will be massively strong entering the second. Rampart can do nothing of the equivalent sort.

With M&M Water is the "magic of change" (enchantments and portals) and Earth is the "magic of staying" (slow, stun, turn to stone).

HoMM3 didn't really have as much of an overt theme for its magic schools because you also had spells that were more Body, Mind, and Spirit forced into the Elemental schools (Cure/Bless/Prayer/Berserk/Resurrect/etc). With HoMM4 they re-emphasized spell school themes. It almost has to have been a balance issue, where Earth would be near useless for anything past level 1 spells and Water would become essential if you put things where they thematically belong. Instead both have value, although Earth is probably too powerful.

Expert Torch Light is somewhat useful. Alternatively though you could just turn the Brightness way up, but that makes the game look like shit. Haste is incredibly useful, but all the recasting makes it tedious.

Sparks and Poison Spray remain incredibly efficient all game long. Ice/Lightning Bolt even have some situational uses.

Shrapmetal is strong as fuck, but everyone already knows that. You even get Dragon Breath and Day of Protection (MM6) or Souldrinker (MM7/8) just by dumping points in Dark. Once you get it rolling there is basically no reason to get up in anything but Dark, Miscellaneous skills, and maybe Meditation.

Comfiest is KKCS and it's the most effective if you want to play both sides with only KCSS being close. Hybrids are garbage, disarm is irrelevant, and Archers don't synchronize with anything other than other archers.

With light you have excellent basic light so Archers and Paladins perform better. After basic light it mainly becomes a buffing spell school, so it works well with melee classes. Your offensive spellcasting will always be weak, but you get a lot more variance in useful classes. Dark on the other hand is ALL about Shrapmetal. It's basically an instagib button as long as you can keep up your mana pool. Once you get up in skill it won't take more than 3 shots to kill anything in the game other than the Blaster Guy, and only because he is immune. As such you want to stack a Cleric and as many Sorcerers as possible with CSSS being the most hilarious and abusive. If you don't really need the early game damage boost from a knight CCCS is very viable, although I would go KCSS until you feel comfortable.

That thread looks full of idiots. Anyone calling druids ok is full of it. GM body is virtually mandatory for power cure and GM protection from Magic to stop instagib and a Cleric is the only class that has it.

Monk damage is absolutely horrible until you get to Evermorn, and really doesn't catchup until you enchant an item of unarmed, since you can also enchant an item of armsmaster it ends up being a push. Thieves only do more damage in the time between when they get expert dagger until the knight gets to master sword which doesn't take very long, even factoring in that thieves attack twice as fast. It's not hard to get really good swords. Expensive armor? Recovery time is pretty bad until GM but you also pick up the master physical reduction. All dodging does is give more AC, youh lose out on the armor enchant until GM anyway.

>> No.4335592

Well he asked for best. Cleric is the only essential class. Other than that you can largely pick what you want but the game will push you toward melee+cleric+offensive caster. The scaling of GM is too powerful for most of the hybrids to catchup, although Paladins and Archers are perfectly viable light side.

>> No.4335615

>>4335592
And armsmaster also adds a point if damage per skill, and 2 at GM. A knight late game doesn't care about weapon skills and is only going up in Armsmaster and maybe Body Building. Any decent knight will be running spear sword. The big problem is the recovery cap of 30 us far too easily reached, so the knight starts with more damage because it's weapons are bigger and attacks just as fast, not to mention the spear artifacts like Charele are better than the dagger artifact equivalents. The only thing a knight misses out on is the triple damage proc, which even at 20 or so isn't reliable.

>> No.4335650

>> No.4335687

>>4335650
Yes, and as such the scaling is roughly the same aside from the triple damage proc which is what I said. Knights start out with more damage because they use harder hitting weapons, so roughly even damage scaling benefits the knight. In addition you keep the very high defense from GM plate and body building and only lose out on the elemental resistance from GM leather which can be replaced with just a ring of protection, disarm, and thievery. When they do get GM they completely dominate offensively, until then the two classes are comparable aside from the thief RNG dependent damage spikes.

Yes that would do a ton to fix the problems. The oversight of only 1 class getting GM body is inexcusable from a balance perspective. >>4341724
to expand on this its clear that the devs didnt really understand how to make a good ruleset in either game but at least 6 had some semblance of logic with balanced HP pools, skill point mastery requirements being different costs depending on how good a skill is, no arbitrary skill level restrictions based on class, elemental resistances being somewhat balanced rather than cranked up and very dark magic biased, a much less linear main quest that lets you tackle different objectives in any order, and of course the huge dungeons full of secrets like any good dungeon crawler
MM3-6 is the peak of the series

>> No.4341749

>>4341673
The problem is how absurdly Shrapmetal scales, making everything else irrelevant. This is the biggest problem in both 6 and 7. It still remains a problem in 8 as well, you just have more ways of dealing with it (Dragons and overleveled party members). MM6 has better quests, more outdoor areas, and the damage types make a lot more sense than making Poison Spray and Ice Bolt do the same type of damage.

>>4341724
Elemental is fine in MM7, especially considering you get a guaranteed Air Magic ring in one of the first quests of the game. Knights are useless in MM6, and armsmaster alone helps bring melee classes back in line with magic scaling. There are some uses for MM6 druids (mainly as backup healer/portals) but having both isn't a realistic tradeoff for giving up more Shrapmetal. They would be perfectly viable light side MM7 if they had GM of both, but still not worth the tradeoff of losing Shrapmetal dark side (not to mention the idiotic Warlock promotion quest).

they're sometimes useful but still a huge waste.

you want your earth, air, wisdom, armor, offense, logistics, then maybe archery, maybe diplomacy, maybe necromancy, maybe navigation, maybe pathfinding, maybe tactics, maybe sorcery, maybe water or fire magic. Stuff like leadership/luck/ballistics force you to take a big opportunity-cost hit. jesus fuck a lot of the homm players here are terribad casuls, probably play on 140%. It hurts me to think what clusterfucks your skill choices are on your main heroes. Probably something like fire magic and sorcery without wisdom, mysticism because why not it must be good, learning "because it's a combo that lets me level up more," scholar and eagle eye "so I can learn all the spells (without wisdom or useful magic school skills) then luck AND leadership while also wearing the pendant of courage.

it hurts to see the same bad thinking rushing to defend bad choices, or not able to clearly see why things are bad without having it spelled out for them. Every freaking thread. This game's been out for nearly 20 years ffs.

Shared life is actually really useful.

If you have a team with different levels of max hp you can use the stronger ones to help heal the weaker ones and then power cure as needed. If everyone has roughly the same max hp to begin with then it brings then all back in line so power cure is maximized.

The rest of that list seems to be MM6 specific. Earth is complete shit other than Stone to Flesh, just like mind is largely shit other than remove fear/cure paralysis/cure insanity although Telekenesis has some uses. Non-scaling spells are usually very early on in the guilds, so the main use is intended to be just for the very early game. Protection from x just lowers damage you take from a specific damage type, it's not really that strong until you get Day of Protection.

>>4341919

You wot m8? If you DW two weapons, then it always takes the slower weapon's recovery time. So if you have anything + Sword, you swing as slow as you would with a staff. Same goes for unarmed btw, which is why Staff GM is so shit. You'd need 70 pts in staff to make it swing as fast as unarmed. And you cannot have a skill higher than 60 in this game (if you raise it to 63 you get a -3 penalty).

>> No.4347165

>>4346819
Master means you already cut recovery by 7 for the sword. Sword is only 90 per Greyface to start with, so master is 83. Maces and spears are 80. Losing 3 recovery time is negligible.

Unarmed is base 60 recovery, not 30. The melee cap is 30. The reason staff GM is shit is that there is basically no way to make up the 40 recovery difference of the staff without stupid amounts of speed/armsmaster, and unlike a knight a monk should be dumping skill points in unarmed all game.

And this is one of my biggest complaints with MM6, you basically need 1 guy to pick up all the utility skills because the others have to go up in Air, Body, and Water. At minimum you need merchant and disarm, and probably identify item all very early, so you get 1 character with lousy fighting ability until mid game.

What are the best skills to put all your skillpoints into after you've obtained all the (Grand) Masteries you need? Other than Dark Magic of course.

>> No.4351078

Bow, Unarmed, or Armsmaster for melee classes depending on what that class can get from them. Body, Air, Water, or Light for casters.

Body Building or Meditation are also ok, but you don't really need the extra most of the time.

>> No.4351084

>>4351078
That's of course assuming you already filled out the other relevant skills to master or GM as needed like armor and weapons, and you just have extra points that would be wasted with something stupid like learning.

Water, Air, and Body never stop being useful even at 30 skill with a ring, especially if you aren't using dark magic.

Learning only gives the experience boost on creature kills, not quests. What do you actually get from learning post skill 1 (which you should always have)? You get more experience for slightly higher hp/sp, but it ends up being pretty minuscule unless you put a ton in or get GM. The skill points from the levels you get aren't as strong as they seem because you had to put points into the skill in the first place and would have been better used elsewhere. If you can get learning up early it can be worth it, but most classes have skills that have to go up immediately, whereas learning is just nice to have instead of borderline essential.

The only other use for learning is padding your final score which is irrelevant.

And you get way more XP for killing which is also an infinite resource.

You can literally always pay back the learning xp

Eventually, but it usually takes about 20-25 levels for master to make up the difference over level 1 because every new level takes more than the previous one, and actually makes quests worth less than they would because the reward is static experience but the amount required to level goes up. This is the biggest problem with learning. Getting from 65 to 75 takes a lot more than 55 to 65. In the mean time you lost out on the value of those skill points elsewhere. By endgame there isn't a huge difference between those 10 levels anyway, whereas early the 21 skill points would have been incredibly useful elsewhere.

You can make a good case for it in 6 and especially 8 because of how many high level monsters you encounter late game and how absurd the levels can get to, so it can mean dozens of levels rather than a handful like 7.

As in the Ubi stuff yes, they may continue making terrible mobile games for China, but any major games are done for. They may eventually sell the IP, but they won't make anything significant again themselves. As for specifically 3 it will remain, Russia and Eastern Europe won't let it die.

Might and Magic will always be better than Wizardry because it has spells like:

>Invisibility
(that actually makes you invisible, not some +AC bullshit no one cares about or something that every monster is able to detected with random rolls)
>Flying
(that actually makes you fly freely all over the map)
>Town Portal
(no Jew owned portal scroll bullshit business)
>Jake Lloyd's Beacon
(puts you into the psych ward after you get raped multiple times as a child actor)
>Feather Fall
(makes you weigh as little as a feather, no more misogynistic scale ruining your day)
