I can't decide if you put Chrono Trigger, DQ III/V, FF 4/6, Lufia, SoM and Super Mario RPG in the same box. But
7th Saga has an special place on my heart. I replayed that shit a lot since I was a kid.

>game more or less is a never-ending fetch-quest
>game has both random encounters and high encounter rate
>game often forces you to use characters you haven't been using who will be dead-weight when you are forced to use them or to spend some time leveling them up
>game has a terribad translation that manages to have "yes" and "no" mixed up and give very vague idea of what you are supposed to do next at best
>good fucking luck figuring out how to find the earth shaman or how to get the best ending without using guides or walkthroughs

This game basically features everything I hate about JRPGs and yet it is one of my all-time favorites. How the fuck does that work?

it's the only version with any sort of challenge, but the remakes do have better audio and visuals, and a few improvements in gameplay(like trading multiple herbs instead one by one).

>> No.4270656

>>4269669
the remakes add a lot of worthwhile extra content, but as another poster noted, they're also a lot easier, which I personally dislike. I also have a soft spot for the original graphics.

if neither of those are an issue for you, play the remakes.

Katt and Nina were both supercute. This game had early waifu appeal, morseo than most JRPGs up to that point that got a western release. We take it for granted now, arguing about who is bestgirl nonstop, but this was a new concept back then.

Unlike FF character art you actually knew what these BoF girls looked like. Detailed in-game art and the manual had full color pinups of them. Due to Yoshitaka Amano's abstract art being hard to fap to and super deformed heavily pixelated character sprites found in final fantasy games a lot of people didn't have a clear idea why Rydia and Celes actually looked like. DQ girls were even less defined. A lot of the official art from japanese games was replaced with crude western art (including BOF cover art) so for years many early JPRG waifus went mostly unrecognized.

Lunar games and Chrono trigger from around that era also had well defined waifu candidates that have stood the test of time.

>> No.4270995

Chrono Trigger

People call it babbys first JRPG, but that's why I like it. The easy difficult and short length gives it much more replay value. I love everything about it, especially the OST.

Personally my overall favorite is Earthbound. However Dragon Quest V and Metal Max Returns are very close. All three are phenomenal games.
>>4269192
For me I could never really stand BoFII, shame since BoFIII is good and BoFIV is genuinely what I think one of the best jrpgs ever made.
>>4269252
If possible I recommend playing the Japanese version, I believe it may have a translation patch. The game's difficulty was turned up to fucking 11 when it was localized and it makes the game borderline unplayable.
>>4269669
I genuinely like the snes version the best. The ps2 version has these ugly models and the ds version has a shitty translation. The snes version may seem a bit lacking, people tend to not like that this version only allows three people in the party unlike later ones that allow four, but I still find it the best way to play the game.

Chrono Trigger is phenomenal, don't let some contrarians that think they're cool effect you.

I wasn't pleased with the way 5 limited your freedom of exploration at every stage, tying progression to its numerous story events. In 3 you wandered the whole world (and Alefgard), wherever you pleased and picked up the story advancement items at any order.

Furthermore, the classes (and the personalities of the remakes) offered more meaningful party customization, I was let down when I found out how monsters are recruited and that most don't have any interesting skill sets.

Lastly, as far as the SFC versions of 3 and 5 are concerned, 3 has a clear advantage since it came later. It and the sixth game are some of the most aesthetically pleasing games on the system.

I've played many of them so I'll just list my top-tier:
DQ I thru III and V, FFV and VI, Seiken Densetsu III, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Live-a-Live, Earthbound. Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre if you count those.

well I want to go on an ebic comfy adventure. If the story facilitates that, then I consider it to be a good story (I consider secret of mana's story to be good in that regard)
