Bingo! It indeed does have some of the best writing I've seen in a game. The Japanese title is 街~運命の交差点~ which means City ~ Destiny's Crosswalk~ (could be Crosswalk of Destiny as well).
It's a sound novel that takes place over the course of 3 days in Shibuya. Destiny's Crosswalk is a reference to the famous Shibuya scrabmle, and also how the lives of the 8 characters intersect throughout the game. As mentioned you play as 8 different characters: na overweight young woman who tries to lose weight so her boyfriend won't dump her, an ex-Yakuza who gets roped into robbery and goes on the run, a male college student who is extorted into working of the mysterious 7 Days Organization, an handsome and popular high school student who has to deal with his various girlfriends, an ex-Legionare who returns home to Japan, a gamer detective who must solve riddles about a bomb by playing arcade games, a writer trying to write his masterpiece who is plagued by sleepwalking and bizarre nightmares, and an failing actor, who with a case of mistaken identity, is sucked into the world of that yakuza.
The writing is witty, dramatic, heartwarming, sill, and sometimes down right bizarre. The gameplay as the title of the game also indicates is that these character interact, sometimes directly other times indirectly, in each others lives throughout the 3 days. In each scenario you get to make choices to continue, usually 3-4, and they change the outcome of the story as well as change the story for other characters. Sometimes you can make a choice that may lead your character to completion of their scenario but will negatively effect other character(s) scenarios. It's so amazing it's hard to explain because the game is long and there is a lot of dialogue, but overall if you can read Japanese I HIGHLY recommend playing this even if you don't like sound/visual novels.
