This.

The same thing has always happened since ever.
Something common for one generation becomes collectible later on life. Has always happened and always will. Toys, cars, bikes, furniture, if you look for it, there will be an youtube channel and a whole community behind almost anything.

People like saying that there's a retro gaming bubble. There's no fucking bubble.
This is how it goes for almost everything:
>thing is released
>a whole generation of kids love it
>the kids grow up
>realize how fucking awful life is as an adult
>try to find something that reminds them of their childhood
>it's expensive because most of them broke or stopped being produced
>becomes an expensive collectible
>prices skyrocket
>generation that worships it slowly dies
>prices decrease because everyone once interested is now dead
It works for most things, almost everything.
Not sure how it's gonna go for video games, I don't think the prices will ever get really low, just fluctuate. Like Coke products or old cars.

>> No.4262746

I have literally never encountered a retro gaming hipster bandwagoner in real life or on the internet, unless by "hipster bandwagoner" you mean a 20 something who wears a Zelda shirt and gushes about how much he likes the NES. But I don't even consider those guys to be "retro gaming hipster bandwagoners" really, just hipsters who think it's cool to like old Nintendo stuff. When I start seeing hipsters collect Japanese Saturn VNs solely for the hipster cred, THEN I'll agree that retro gaming is being invaded by bandwagoners. But I've never encountered anyone like that. No one cares about this autistic little corner of the internet that we have here.

Allowing discussion of 6th gen systems would push out discussion of older systems.

Also, I think it's a compelling argument to say that gaming started to undergo a qualitative shift in 6th gen, and it broke away from its earlier design philosophies. You can try to make this claim more precise by pointing to the emergence of more "cinematic" games, less arcade influence, more reliance on online play and DLC, etc. On this view, "retro" is more of an ethos than a window of time. I don't think this transformation was fully realized until 7th gen, but 6th gen is when things started to shift.

There's a "current" state of retro gaming? Here I thought by definition it was playing games that are old. I am sure people buy and sell on ebay and elsewhere and there are many people besides myself getting into them. But if someone else is on the bandwagon for something I like then that's cool in my books.

I don't see any problem so it's hard to lay fault anywhere...

Yeah. This right here is the argument killing retro gaming.

You could argue that cinematic games started with CD consoles, and Eric Chahi games.
This doesn't push out older retro games it limits the discussion of older retro games by not letting you compare it to another generation.

Not him but I see it as bringing in new people with fresh perspectives who may then gain an interest for earlier gens. Already no one cares about Atari topics around here.

As for the second point, I see those shifts happening continually all through gaming. There were many cinematic old games and there are many non-cinematic new ones. I see major shifts in every generation because gaming is always changing.

I think the whole board set up going by console release is kind of dumb though. It should go by games, and be 15 or 18 years in my opinion. Cave Story should be allowed here because it's ported on Genesis but not Circle of the Moon.

What's really sad is the state of "antiques" which even as a term has fallen out of favor. We have an "antique mall" downtown which is basically just a four story flea market in an old building and the people that run it and the clientele are so so old that they're just slowly dying out and the value of that stuff is plummeting far below antiques roadshow levels. I actually buy antique stuff now and then over a modern alternative (e.g. my coffee mill) because they've become cheaper and are by nature proven to be extremely durable.

You are looking at things the wrong way.

I mostly emulate, although I've got a respectable enough collection ranging from the 2600 to the Dreamcast. I don't give a shit about playing on hardware at this point because for most games the difference is negligible. Obviously this isn't true for everything, but from where I'm standing whatever issues plague retro collecting don't really reach me.

I just beat Marathon Infinity and am moving on to Might and Magic: Secret of the Inner Sanctum for the NES. For me everything is fine.

The same thing might eventually happen to video games. I say might because when we're all dead, the generations who are growing up now will have a nostalgia for minecraft and other things. And if you ask most kids these days, having to "change cartridges" or having physical copies of games is a stupid idea.
So either it'll die out of lack of interest, or become even more expensive due to the historical interest, which I don't think will happen.

>> No.4262990

Retro gaming is a pretty niche hobby. Just because some underage subscribes to AVGN for le epic maymays doesn't mean they're suddenly going to buy up huge quantities of overpriced NES cartridges. It's the resellers who are artificially driving up prices by hoarding their yard sale and craigslist finds. These guys buy dozens of copies of the same cartridges and just tuck them away in their basement until they can unload them on eBay. A quick eBay search of any game will turn up listings with multiple quantities.

I don't know what all the redditbabbies problem is because /v/ is a pretty nice place sure there is a lot of shitposting threads and stupid waifu crap but if you like a game and make a quality thread you can usually have quality discussion. There are just too many people in their late 20's, 30's, and 40's who are severely depressed and remember all the fun they had when they were kids and teenagers with all the time in the world to play video games. Even if school sucked for them or even if their family life wasn't great, video games provided an escape from all the bullshit and also was a way for friends to have fun when the weather sucked.

After life has kicked their ass for about a decade or so, and the pills and therapy are barely keeping them from suicide, people remember the fun they had with Mario 3 when they were 8 years old and go out and collect a bunch of retro games and systems.

They play them for a few days, maybe a few weeks and while they are happy for a little bit, the nostalgia wears off and they are still left with a depressing existence that is just too strong and not nearly enough time to play time-sink video games.

That's why we have liquor and drugs.

You're right and wrong. You're right about the depressed and felling sad bit. Video games were never huge in the 80s/90s. The amount of players are dwarfed compared to today.

Go for it. But people get understandably upset when anyone supports overpriced resellers like so many newbies do. You don't *have* to pay fifty bucks for someone's beat up old NES cartridge, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. In most cases, there's a good chance you'll eventually stumble across the game at a fair price when if you persistently go thrifting. >> No.4265276

>It's a minority of people that actually played games in the 80s/90s that are collecting them now.

I definitely agree. Video games are more popular than ever. Limited supply of cartridges/discs. Every gamer from back in the day, and every new gamer interested in "retro" makes the prices go up. It sucks but I don't see it changing soon.

I also think "buy it now" on ebay did a lot of it. BIN is for someone that wants a game right now and doesn't mind if they pay a lot over average price. The trouble is, other sellers see a $10 game go for $20 BIN, so they expect $20 for their copy. The price average raises with each game sold, then some joker from a local flea market puts "ebay" prices on their dusty cartridges and copies of double dribble.

I've invested in good flashcarts. I still pick up a game I don't have if it's decent and I find it for a good price locally. Anymore I mainly buy games I had or rented and liked when I was a kid. I don't need a game because it's rare, or to make my shelves look full. Obviously I will buy good games I've learned about and want to try. Flashcarts help me to not waste money on games that end up being huge turds.

I think a lot of people, myself included, have/had the most problem with prices because they try to buy everything they find.

I can't tell you how many times I hear one of these faggots say "OH MAN THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT GAME, I BOUGHT IT A FEW YEARS AGO, MAYBE I SHOULD TRY IT". What the fuck is the point in buying something you won't play? I buy retro games, but only ones that I think actually look fun and will give me value for my money. The minute someone tells me they own hundreds or thousands of shit games they have no intention of playing, I walk the other way.

>dwindling supply
Except that's not how the retro market works at all. You're arguing that an increasingly large number of people are taking an interest in owning retro hardware and games, thereby decreasing supplies. It's mostly (but maybe not exclusively) people who grew up in those generations who insist on owning retro hardware. Younger folks are more likely to play emulated collections or ports. Given the number of devices that can do this - including smartphones - it's just a lot easier to experience classic gaming this way than it is to sink hundreds of dollars into a retro hardware setup.

Not him but it's dwindling supplies because every day people buy games they never plan on reselling. So inevitably as time goes on the number of copies of a particular game on the open market gets lower and lower.

Certainly younger folks are more likely to emulate, though older folks tend to emulate a lot as well. It really doesn't matter though, since there will always be collectors in both camps who will want to own the original for any number of reasons. That's what created the supply and demand loop and pushes prices up.

And he's right when he claims that. In previous years, the people doing this would want to do it, but didn't have the money.

No, it's resellers who are driving prices up, and artificially so. They buy multiple instances of the same games and tuck them away in their basements while they try to unload their stock through eBay or other auction sites. Because they've successfully hoarded so many cartridges, they figure they can use this artificial scarcity to their advantage by driving up prices.

>The number of people willing to buy is much higher than ten years ago.

No, and that's not even the point that was being made. Resellers obtain their stocks through flea markets and yard sales where games are not necessarily prices competitively. And failing that, they advertise on craiglist for anybody to sell their used games in large quantities, but only if they don't have to pay competitive prices for those stocks. Then they turn around and relist these stocks on eBay at 5000+% markup. This practice is what drives up the value of these items, and it's entirely artificial in its execution.

That's not what artificial scarcity is.

There are a limited number of produced games. There will be no more production of those games except for versions with ridiculously jacked prices, like that new SF2 collector's release.

The fact that resellers are buying stock in it is proof that the limited supply creates scarcity. There'd be no reason to resell something with no scarcity.

Take Fallout for example. Sure, it had a rabid fanbase, but it was small. It straight never sold well, but without the exposure that older gamers juxtaposed for the classic games against the mobs of Bethesdrones exclaiming the greatness of modern Fallout, a lot of people wouldn't have come to the realization of just how half-assed Bethout actually IS.

E-Celebs may be a small part of the problem, but in the end, they are nowhere near the root of the problem.
>But After AVGN/Pat/Other Eceleb posts a video on a game, prices go up!
This seems to just be fanbases drooling and buying whatever e-celebs bring attention to. Even the bad games that AVGN have played have been known to go up in value sometimes after he plays them. It's not so much the Person themselves that is the problem, it's more their fans running out to buy whatever they say is good, or even games that aren't good, just because they played them.

Another thing i hear is that the game collecting videos on youtube have caused prices to go up.
This, i'm kind of mixed on. While i'm sure that making videos on someone getting earthbound for $10 will certainly bring attention to people, I think it's more News websites. People hear about Nintendo world championships or Little Samson selling for tons of money and think "Wow, I Bet my copy of maddens NBA allstars 2003 is worth a lot too!" It reminds me a lot of the Disney Black Diamond VHS article that said that they were worth thousands of dollars. People are delusional and refuse to believe what they don't want to believe, or hear about another (much rarer) game selling for a lot of money, and think that whatever they have must be a goldmine. Honestly, i think the articles and videos about rare video games and valuable video games and games selling for hundreds of dollars are what are causing people to raise their prices the most, more than anything else.
In the end, the reason prices are going up is simply because of exposure. People nowadays can easily lookup whatever they have, and know if it's rare or valuable. A couple years ago, that wasn't as mainstream.

This same thing happened with:
Dukes of Hazard stuff
Elvis Stuff
Baseball Cards
GI Joe stuff

Used to go for much more than now, but the people who grew up with this stuff originally has gotten old and looking to just get rid of the stuff because they're downsizing or moving. Or they're dead. Most people who didn't grow up with this stuff don't care about it much and won't pay much for it. Same will happen with the games we grew up with. It's mostly just people in our age rage who want this stuff.

My young cousins don't care one bit about anything pre PS2. To them they're just old games. I have one younger cousin who likes 16 and 32 bit era games but just emulates on his laptop for free. If paying money is what it took to play these games he probably wouldn't bother.

I'm the guy who wrote >>4262746 and while I would consider the girl in that picture to be a hipster of SOME kind, I don't think she's the kind of hipster who is "ruining retro gaming". Why do I care if people want to sperg out over the absolute most popular games on the most popular consoles? She almost certainly doesn't care enough about retro games (or any kind of games) to drive up prices or drag down the quality of retro communities. So what's the problem? Unless you're so poor that having to pay anything more than $10 for Pokemon Emerald is a great injury to you.

It inflates the entire market. Sure they probably wont buy import Sega Saturn games but those have been expensive forever. The more popular it gets with fake nerd culture all prices will go up with demand.

I'd be happy too if I got to make a living off of just reading the back of a video game box and then seeing the dosh roll in after I list it on ebay.

I've always wondered if the hipsters like those posted here actually play retro games or if they're just fashion contrarians (read: faggots).

...or if they're really just regulars here

>the current state of retro gaming

The current state of retro gaming, for somebody who actually cares about the games, is the same as it's ever been, except a little older. The crap OP is talking about is something else. It sounds like it's actually two other things, from what I can see: The current state of retro game COLLECTING, and the current state of those aspects of online culture that touch on retro gaming.

Neither of these things matters much. Collecting is important for historians and such, but those people seem to be doing their job well enough, and only a few of them are really strongly needed. For the rest of us, it's mostly a stupid pointless lifesink that a person shouldn't be engaging in to begin with. Getting physical copies of a few games isn't that hard, even when prices are driven up by whoever, and you don't need more than a few. Emulation is pretty great, flash drives and burned CDs and such can fill another gap, and true collecting of the sort that would drive a person to salivate over the NES World Championship cartridge is pointless madness.

And the online culture of retro gaming is and was disposable fluff, no matter which celebrities, "hipsters", or other undesirables may be involved in it at any given moment. It is flawed yes, but it always was, and it would need to be built into something much greater than it's ever been in order to merit having a bunch of people crying over it and trying to protect it from corruption. The games themselves are mostly single-player to begin with, and those that aren't can still mostly be played to their fullest by no more than four people at a time. They don't rely on any broad culture to be fully exercised.

A retro gamer doesn't need the current state of anything to be in good shape, excepting a few games, a few gaming platforms, MAYBE a few friendships, and a pair of hands.
