Ignoring RE2s popularity is needed for that though, because it was far more popular for far longer than CV.

Just IMO here, but CV always felt to me like a generic RE with nothing but superficial features to set it apart from the others in it's genre. Fun and awesome to me at first because it was new and "next gen" at the time. But once the newness wore off, I got over it and went back to loving the first three games more.
But that's just me, I guess...

Seriously? Another Veronica hate thread? I personally like Veronica better than RE3. I think the big spartan rendered environments, ambient or silent soundtrack and prolonged lack of combat continued to the "dread" that I like from my horror. Ditto for the real thinness of ammo and eventual, maybe too late realization that the knife in that game is actually pretty devastating. However considering the actiony direction the franchise and Capcom games in general took it seems more people prefer the "fear" of close quarters and regular combat.

Furthermore it is wildly inaccurate to say that Veronica came out to "mixed reviews". People, journalists included absolutely lost their shit over it. The scale, the fidelity - these were powerfully impressive things at the time. It's much more fair to point out that the game was held in unreasonably high regard until the franchise changed gears at which point the "nu-RE" fans pushed through powerful backlash against it.

To me, Veronica was the final and most epic traditional RE game although ultimately I prefer RE2 for replayability and am cautiously optimistic that the upcoming remake will be really really great.

Matrix 1 was a good movie, 2 was iffy, 3 was trash, and Animatrix was alright because they had literal anime studios from Japan doing it and it was in that weird cross-sectioning time of the early 00's where they knew the people wanted anime but they would only give it to us in distilled formats like Animatrix.

That doesn't mean that there needed to be this huge black-hole of creativity from the late 90's ~ 2005/2006 where everything out of America was a cheap rip-off of The Matrix or had to have some sort of reference inside of it. Putting The Matrix references inside your work of art was the equivalent of putting memes inside your work before we had rage faces that could date your game to a specific year and make it age like shit.

I was a big fan of the series since I was 10. I eagerly awaited CV.... I had to convince a friend so we could save up money together to buy a Dreamcast and the game. We sold many old console games for it.

Turns out the game was shit, and that came from a hardcore fan back then.
Also I used to go on the biggest RE fan forums back then and I wasn't the only one not liking CV.

I kept giving the game more chances, and everytime I replay I like it less. I genuinely believe anyone liking CV likes style of substance, the problem being that that "style" is Matrix and "bad guys want to conquer the world" bs, which is at the same time unoriginal and unfitting for RE.

But if the "style" was CV's only problem, I would actually like it. Everything about it is abyssimal, and most importantly, gameplay and atmosphere.

Anyway I was 16 when CV came out got it and a Dreamcast for Xmas that yrear. Like I said, it was new and impressive to me at the time,I beat it a couple times and got over it. Just like everyone else on the planet.

There were lots of impressive moments (first village scene, that big fucking monster fish, El gigante, the sewers with those insectoid pieces of shit that could turn invisible...). 5, on the other hand fucking ruined RE because it was basically RE 4: Half-Chub Edition. The RE4 underperformed too, so Capcom screwed up Nintendo and released the game on other platforms. Since the Capcom Five debaclemost of Capcom games have been multiplatform.
