One of the few games I hung onto from childhood. A couple things to get out of the way since we're having a Comix Zone thread.

>inb4 it's haaaarrrdddd
I beat it when I was 8. Git gud.

>inb4 hitting stuff hurts your health
Go punch and kick your way through your front door then report back. The game punishes you for playing bad. Use your head and you won't lose as much health.

>inb4 it's too short
I actually agree with this. One more chapter would have been perfect imo

>inb4 y no sequel?
I have no idea. Great premise. Could of done so much more and been fantastic on the Saturn.

>> No.4246265

The STI was overall pretty mediocre but Comix Zone was legit awesome.

Surprisingly fun mix between a sidescroller beat em up and a puzzle game.

They made a concept drawing for a sequel (with ugly 90s CGI), but it was not put forward. Probably due to internal politics - USA dev studios were downsized at the time and they were pushing 3d games too much.

All the games they worked on were at the bare minimum good, some like Comix Zone were great.

Bit boring

Some good things not great, some bad things not terrible and a single great game, that's like the dictionary definition of mediocre.

I have to believe it's younger fellas used to easier gameplay that complain about old games being difficult. Anyone that grew up playing 16bit or especially 8bit games should have no issue with Comix Zone.

Well there are basically two audiences these days, either they want the game to hold their hands for the entire duration, or they want it to be Dark Souls.

There are games that benefit from being very difficult and there are games that benefit from being easy, but all games should at least offer some challenge to the average player.

Why do people say this game is hard? Sure, it's not EASY, but by retro game standards its the norm. It's much easier than Contra or Battletoads.

Is it because it's a beatemup that has actual level design and requires you to think, use items and mix up your attacks rather than just walking right and mash punch?

Confirmed jackass. People shoulder through things all of the time without dying, and the game is hard for new players because you have to learn the combat, how to use the rat and certain puzzles with one life until you beat the first level, then I believe it's one continue. Disagree 100%. Unless a game is broken and unbeatable then it's difficulty can be overcome if you want to keep playing while trying and improving, which is the whole point of a game.

If it's easy and there's no challenge then it's just a boring waste of time. There's no value in experiencing something boring and easy

>People shoulder through things all of the time without dying

Hitting objects(doors, barrels, etc) actually won't kill you in the game. Yeah, it takes away health but once you only have a sliver of health left you can keep beating on doors all you want and you won't die. But you would of course know this if you actually beat the game instead of quiting early then bitching about how haaaarrrdd it is to anons on a Chinese basket weaving forum.

>the game is hard for new players because you have to learn the combat, how to use the rat and certain puzzles with one life until you beat the first level, then I believe it's one continue

Sounds like just about every game ever made ever. git gud faggot

>> No.4252217

Thank god that games have outgrown bullshit continue systems like this one has. I mean, new games have found other ways to pad their themselves out with stupid shit, but it's not nearly as obnoxious as dying a couple of times near the end and having to start the whole fucking thing over again. Wouldn't be so bad if it was a full blown action game, but no, there's puzzles to solve and you need to solve them again too, which isn't challenging at all the second time around and is just tedious.

I would say that games with extremely limited lives/continues like this are just a pet peeve of mine, but really they annoy the fuck out of just about everyone who isn't a masochistic retro elitist like half of the fucking spergs on this board.

I've already proven that I can beat this level. And the next level too. I've already proven I can solve the puzzle without just punching my way through it. I've done all this shit a bunch of times already and it's quickly pushing the game from enjoyable to annoying. Just give me unlimited continues and let me start at the beginning of the stage every time I die so I can actually progress through the fucking game without wasting vast amounts of time playing through already completed levels on autopilot just so I can get back to having fun again.
