Have you never seen a Zelda thread on this board? All the nintendo and zelda fanboys want everyone to believe that every single little thing OoT had was "new", "innovative" and "influencial". Mounting a horse, the mini games, the lock-on system, navi, you name it...

When you look at both Legends and OoT it's obvious OoT took a lot of elements from Legends. Roll -> navi, the Lock-On system, the mini games, even the way the overworld map works... But no, OoT invented of all that, despite coming out at the very end of year 1998.

>> No.4239720

>if you want better graphics, N64

If by better graphics you mean blurry bilinear filtering and shorter draw distance, sure.

>> No.4239735

>>4239717
Yes, and you're really stretching. Mega Man Legends is basically Atari's Battlezone with a blue robot, and implying that OoT hadn't been in development for years prior to release, and that the devs knew of or wanted to borrow ideas from a rushed, flawed attempt at 3D Mega Man is ludicrous. The lock-on system was in the unreleased Starfox 2 before MML's release too.

>> No.4239737

>>4239717
Tomb Raider already had a lock-on system, like MML. So MML can't claim that.

The thing is that the lock-on system in Tomb Raider and MML was very very limited compared to the one in OoT - the one that eventually was copied by later games.

>> No.4239742

>>4239735
Legends came out a whole year before OoT. Meaning development of OoT had to still be underway for at least 6months after the release of Legends.

Legends was a commercial success and critically acclaimed in Japan, it's also not only the exact same genre as OoT, but the same type of game in that genre: 3D action adventure with world exploring, dungeons, upgrades to get along the way and towns to explore, with sidequests and all.
You're fooling yourself if you think they wouldn't have played their direct competition, or taken the good ideas of a game everyone liked.

also

>Tomb Raider already had a lock-on system

Good. My point isn't that Legends invented any of these. My point is that OoT didn't.
I swear, just wait till the next Zelda thread, or start one yourself, you'll see.

>> No.4239746

The OoT fanboys who said that the game "invented" this and that are just as bad as those who say that OoT didn't codify many modern game design elements.

OoT might not have invented lock-on, but it codified it. MML's lock-on is best described as a proto version of what eventually got codified.

>> No.4239748

You really believe the OoT dev-team implemented some of the game's defining features in the final 6 months of development, and after playing a mediocre tank game at that? I get the 'OoT didn't do it first!' argument, but why are you even bothering to make it? Who cares? Do Zelda threads bother you that much? There's 11 MML threads everyday too, so it's not like we're hurting for discussion of it either.

This

Nintendofags constantly proclaim things like Mario 64 was the very first 3d game with freedom to move around (false)they claim that oot invented every single element in it (very false) they often denounce big Sony, sega and ms titles, because "muh fun" and then generalize you to death when you make any counter points. They even jerk off over third party exclusives.
Like when RE4 came out, and all the Nintendo kiddies who'd never played a damned tps in their lives actually thought it was innovative and the literal best game ever made...

Oot is a good game. I'm not saying it's not. It's arguably even the best n64 game. It's simply not as amazing as nintentoddlers believe. It's not mind blowing, it's not all that innovative, it doesn't look amazing (even for the time) and it's not the best thing ever.

Mario 64 is the first console game to implement analog thumbstick control in a 3D environment (arguably tied with Pilotwings 64, but Mario 64 was apparently in development earlier). That is a pretty huge achievement in the scope of 3D video games, regardless of your very obvious bias.

I actually really prefer the looks of the PS1 version, but I admit I've never played the PC version. I've never had an issue with the wobbly textures in PS1 games and the brighter, sharper textures look better in my opinion. I'm also really not a fan of how with the N64 version they just lazily ported the digital controls to the analog stick. If they had bothered to implement actual analog control it would probably be the definitive version of the game.

>> No.4240031

It was definitely a lazy job, both the N64 and PC ports.
But I consider them to be slightly better than the original PS version. All in all, they're all flawed, but they're also all playable.
The PC version is like the N64 version but with CD audio on voice tracks, and better texture resolution, the problem it has is that the voice samples are desynched on the cutscenes. Not that it really matters in this game, but then again you can't skip the cutscenes which sucks.

Not at all, but it's an attempt, I guess.
There just aren't that many first person plartformers to compare to. Jumping Flash is still the technical best when it comes to controls.

Yeah, no.
With the loss of those series conventions came the loss of solid action adventure gameplay. Zelda is now a shell devoid of any substance.

Let be honest, combat has always been average at best and to now make it a highlight, given the dungeons and puzzle design now take a significant hit in quality, was a terrible decision. It's so fucking clunky. Wind Waker was smoother, as was Skyward Sword. Both certainly had more variety to them.

Likewise, the decision to gut story in a LoZ game and urge exploration, but truthfully fail to give reason to explore. The game lacks a reward system other than "Wow, you made it champ!" There's no meaningful drive.
>No new, exciting quests
>No new, learned moves
>Any new weapons are barely something to get excited about given their fragility
>korok seeds
>85% of locations are painfully dull when compared to other AAA game overworlds.
At least Xenoblade did it right. You get a tangible XP addition when you explore.
