I am confused as fuck right now. So I'm emulating the good old fashioned Super Mario Bros. And I swear, some of the 1-ups aren't even there. Like the one in 2-1, right near the beginning. Or the one in 3-1, above the bridge. What the fuck is going on? As far as I can tell it's the exact same original game, so I don't see why it should be different. Anyone else experience this?

Look. There's supposed to be a block right here with a 1-up. But Mario just keeps on jumping, no block appears.

On the original NES there's definitely a 1up there. Like if you look at any video or map of 2-1 it's there. But for some reason it's not showing up at all, it's bizarre. Same with 3-1.

>>424034

I considered that but it's strange. I got the rom from a site that just has a ton of normal roms. And like I said the game seems normal in all other aspects. Even the 1ups are in the right places in 1-1 and 1-2.

>> No.424108

What? So the 1up only appears if you warp? That's hard to believe. I mean I believe you but there's no way the game is programmed like that.

Maybe, if you get both 1ups in 1-1 and 1-2 as I did, it wont appear...but thats also hard to believe

>> No.424128

Try it yourself. Same thing happens in SMB2J (for some of the hidden shrooms)

It's happened to me, and I was playing on the Virtual Console. Sometimes the 1-up will be there, other times it won't.

Isn't this the case with the 1up on the bridge in 3-1? My memory is rusty.

>> No.424247

The hidden 1ups only appear if you get all coins in stage 3 of the previous world (if you played that level at all)

People really don't know this? This is fucking Super Mario Bros, possibly the most well known and classic game ever. And you're this ignorant about it. I bet you have trouble with hammer brothers too don't you? Holy shit.

Long jump.

Possibly a running triple-jump with a dive at the end, if you have the space.

You may be able to hit the end of the slide and have enough time to jump again and collect the star.

I've never heard of that either, even though I've known about the "falling through the block into the background" in SMB3 since I was a kid. And yeah, I've beaten both SMB and SMB2J (in the form of the "Lost Levels" on Allstars).

Then again, I never hung with the hardcore SMB fanbase, so maybe it's just one of those things all the "hardcore fans" know but nobody else knows.

Back then PAL games ran in 50hz contrary to 60hz for NTSC. Which means that most PAL conversions ran at a speed almost 20% slower. However, a few games had great conversions where the difference in speed was not noticeable.

I assume that when they converted SMB1 they either decided to make it faster or screwed it up somehow.

I know. That's why I was wondering how it could possibly have gotten faster.
