repostan puyo doom idea

>one player plays regular doom game
>other player plays a puyo puyo game shown on the hud screen
>when other player makes puyo combos it can summon stronger monster at a random place near a doom player
>doom can send nuisance puyo to other player by killing monsters
>level ends when doom player dies or puyo player loses the game and next map boots up

Puyo Puyo vs. Doom

Additional ideas:
>"Co-op" mode can be done the same way, but instead the Puyo player spawns weapons and ammo for the Doom player and the Doom player removes garbage puyos by killing demons (maybe they remove "demon puyos" for the Puyo player, which they can't remove without the Doom player's help?)
>Big Puyo blob enemies in Doom, just for shit's and giggles; maybe killing them gives bonuses or something
>Power-ups for the Puyo player similar to Doom's; berserk could make chains more rewarding, invisibility could grant rainbow puyos that connect with any color, soul/megaspheres could grant 2x2/3x3 puyo groups, invulnerability could clear the board of garbage puyos
And add a selection of Puyo characters to play as. Not that they'd really do anything besides sit on the side and look cute, but I want to have Ringo cheering me on.

taking spiderdemon case (because i happen to have a map with one that can't move around much handy). it takes 34 rockets / 15 ssg (30 shells) so latter is best for conservation, however rocket rate is 20 tics while ssg rate is 57 tics, so rockets almost three times faster to fire. total time 34*20 = 680 < 15*57 = 855 tics. so even though rockets use more ammo, they end up faster to defeat the creature. plasma is 3 tics per shot and takes ~130 = 690 tics, approximately the same as rockets. BFG is obviously fastest, i didn't bother to count.

You just don't know how to use it since it is not as common knowledge as BFG mechanics.
It does not have weird movement patterns.
It homes in onto closest enemy upon bounce, and after each bounce corrects its route towards said target if itdoes not hit first time
It's initial speed and movement vectors are affected by your movement, so if you know how to do it, you can steer it into direction you want or launch some curveballs that will hit your enemy from the side.

I'd to strats video on it but my current PS is a 2003' dualcore potato that can't handle recording software.

Multiple kills within a certain time limit to build chains could work, but I think killing higher tier enemies should reward more to the chain. Maybe each enemy can be given a certain number of "chain points" that add up to a chain meter to go from 1x to 2x to 3x and so on, which quickly decreases on its own but instead of regressing to 2x then 1x etc, it instead caps at whatever your highest chain was and sends/clears garbage puyo and then resets back to 0x.
So an imp would be worth few chain points but a group of them would be enough to get you to a 1x chain, while a baron on its own is worth a lot more chain points and killing it quickly after other weaker enemies could be a good strategy for building 2x or 3x chains. Since cyberdemons and spider masterminds are so rare, maybe they can reward enough points for a 4x/5x chain on their own. Which would probably make Gotcha! a hellish map for puyo players.
Also, the obligatory music to be played during this would be Satan's theme:

But treat bigger monsters like bigger puyo clears (i never knew the term)
For example, in Puyo Puyo, you could clear 7 puyos all at once (heck, even more if you're creative). Treat bigger monsters like that, it's not just a 4-puyo clear, it's multiple puyo clears

Low tier enemies could be the equivalent of one puyo block (and killing four would activate a single chain), while stronger enemies could count for 2, 4, 6, or even 8 puyos at a time for extra garbage in a single chain while killing groups would make a larger number of chains possible. I guess you could just use the regular Puyo Puyo chain logic so long as you figure out a way to equate each enemy kill to a certain number of puyo blocks. Could be a cool mod, it has potential after ironing some ideas out.

crash site (300min)
---

i automatically love this for being a "to hell and back" map, like some of the most classic of classics (UAC_DEAD is probably the most well known). arrival at moonbase finds no signs of human life, with no escape because demons have taken macguffin back to their dimension. so climax is to go into Hell Itself. here you have crash-landed, your ship and crew in pieces around you. a story without words.

the moonbase is quite good. maybe a few too many small rooms and doors, but there are some windows and non-square room to prevent wolfmap syndrome. also many nice views of the planet outside, with the obligatory accessible outyard where you find some useful item, love it. tension builds as you journey down to the departure gate where heavier resistance is met (sadly this is a bit susceptible to door camping). then you arm yourself heavily and cross over.

the other side of the hell portal is suitably weird and a completely different gameplay style, where instead of rooms+halls we have a spacious cavern in all shades of glowing rocks where you are chased around by various deadly beasts while looking for the final key. i died here, managing to get myself stuck between an exploding pain elemental and three other monsters all at once, in an open cavern floor. impressive. one restart later... on return, the base has been repopulated, and you must fight your way to the exit, behind which freedom awaits. well almost, it's a pretty obvious ambush. also no way off the planet sadly, just a lift to wherever next.

there are some small bugs. thing 277 is deaf and never teleports. the secret area is split into three; sectors 440 and 441 should not be secret. this is especially confusing as there are many map-visible two-sided lines that look like they could be openable doors, but aren't; i thus spent a long time looking for other secret triggers that didn't exist.

this makes me think. i've often felt mapping is a game whose objective is to kill the player*. given that, the game must be fair: you can't leave the player thinking he's been cheated. in those terms, stuff like chaingunner spam is equivalent to, i don't know, turning on fast weapons/infinite ammo or similar. interesting idea.

Agreed. They'd actually do better to remove some of the frames to keep the timing instead of straight tweening the frames.

Better yet, toss in some squash and stretch so the frames distort a tad... just to give the illusion of momentum.

Still, it's not bad. I think a few of the weapons suffer from a similar thing, but it's mostly in the death and attack frames for me.

The thing is once you get the RL you don't have much of a reason to use anything else, especially with Ogres giving a constant supply of rockets. That's why lots of mapmakers ignore the RL completely and instead only give the player the grenade launcher- just as much firepower but you still have to get closer and aim beyond 'click on enemy.'

The original Doom and Doom 2 levels are generally not thought to be challenging for the most of it. In fact they're mostly quite easy, even on UV they almost never put the thumbscrews on you in any sense, and even when they do it's never a truly 'demonic' encounter.

Plutonia was conceived of to shut up people who wrote letters and mail to id Software and complained that the game was way too easy, to give those people something to take on.
Similarly, Thy Flesh Consumed was made as an extra episode for the proper commercial release of Doom (which I guess they wanted to tie in to Doom 2 being released commercially), and similarly it had some pretty challenging levels, though it's pretty short, and it's only in original Doom, so it has a smaller bestiary.
Given that TFC probably wasn't quite enough, I'm guessing that id Software just told the Casali brothers to make something to really challenge people, a full 32 set of levels using all of Doom 2's new assets and strengths to test skilled players.

Plutonia is supposed to be a real challenge by design, and if you feel it isn't easy, then it's doing it's job, it's working as intended. Whether you like it or not is another question, some people enjoy this kind of challenge a lot, and it appeals greatly to them, some think Plutonia isn't hard in a fair way and don't like it, some hate it thoroughly.
Some think Plutonia isn't hard enough, thus we have monstrosities like Sunlust.
You could also argue about whether or not Plutonia has good map design, personally, I think it has a lot of good and novel ideas, but that Evilution largely has much more appealing and interesting exploration and atmosphere.

Largely, if you don't like Plutonia, you have these options:
1: Git Gud (use mouse turning, if you already aren't).
2: Lower the difficulty to a level more suitable to you.
3: Try out a gameplay mod that changes things up.
4: Play a different map set with a difficulty level more suitable to your level of skill.

Playing Demonsteele with Shihong and figuring out she has 3 different modes that determine her special moves. Then figuring out your punches as Shihong have infinite range. Then figuring out you can fire a barrage of missles out of your hands. Then figuring out you can become invincible or have a drone that automatically fires at enemies and hovers around your head. Then figuring out you have a lazer sword that one shots everything from Grunts to Pinkies. Then figuring out you can cheese a Baron in seconds with nothing but your fists at infinite range. Pic related is a folder of mods I have been gathering that don't do much to change the core gameplay of Doom, but just add to it and enhance it.

I'm looking for some gore mods that aren't retarded and could go with vanilla doom.

Also, I'm looking for mods in general to go along with this Vanilla+ folder.

I'm also open to any sound mods that replace monster/weapon sounds as long as it fits the old doom feel.

Every single download of the Quake 2 music, from the official GOG installer, to the pack in the OP, has all the files from the base game, and the two official mission packs, in one directory labelled as track02.ogg to track21.ogg.

Yamagi Q2 wants the files seperated per-mod. Tracks 02-11 are for the base game, but I can not for the life of me figure out how tracks 12-21 are supposed to be arranged for the mission packs.

Is there a reference for this somewhere? I couldn't find one. Everywhere seems to only list the 5 tracks for each game, ignoring tracks shared between games (which is mentioned in a few places, without actual lists) and not giving order.

The problem: sword remains in the same position.
What you need to do is:
1st frame is fine as is
2nd frame needs to aim much more towards the player
3d frame should have a slash effect to it (or make enemy do a slash effect in front of it) and have a sword be in the final stage of the cut, i.e. being something like this

this is true, but the point is the game levels was tested in-house by the designers a single map at a time from pistol starts. they (sandy petersen at least, iirc, in an interview) admitted not taking weapons carried forward into account was a mistake that led to the game being too easy.

If that was true then all FPS games wouldve been balanced around player headshotting every enemy and always using absolutely optimal movement patterns and weapons, because you know, it is totally possible.

Except they are not. Even on the hardest diffuiculty commercial games are balanced around avearage player with 50% accuracy at best.

And all fighting games arcade modes wouldve been balanced around frame-perfect combos, cancels and perfect executions, which any fighting player would tell you is not true and that max difficulty arcade mode can be beaten by any buttonmasher with a at least a tiny sliver of skill and understanding of how things work.

This implies that playtester is so stupid he can not fathom anyone playing it in a way different from how he does it, which is obviously not true.

Considering that using mouse and keyboard simulatenously was almost unheard of at the time, I really doubt Doom would be balanced around with it in mind.

Which is exactly the reason why UV becomes so easy if you use KB+M - because it was balanced around different input method.

In this case for just good player "hard" difficulty would feel "just right".

fix imp that doesn't wake up, can now get 100% kills
remove 2 spurious secret areas, can now get 100% secrets
remove unnecessary back sides / sectors, so eg. fake doors don't look openable
improve look / texture alignment of crates in main entry corridor
change back of ssg room door to door1 (was startan)
tidy up the candles around the green armour
make a flashing light a lot more subtle so it doesn't look like a secret
remove translucency from lines (non-vanilla)
change comptall to shawn2 on back of console in teleporter room
remove all unused tags
remove all tags from manual doors (D1/DR types) and their backsectors
change a solid hanging body into one that is long enough to block you fully
disguise the final ambush a bit, at least make the doors invisible
make it less easy to skip raising the bars
make it less easy to straferun over them too

Plutonia is mediocre gameplay wise. It's very obvious by the second half that the brothers ran out of ideas and defaulted to ambush spam on every level. The final 5 or so maps consist on nothing but "go back to explored area, be surrounded by ambushing enemies"

map design wise, it isn't bad, it's very crude but also very creative. Evilution maps where much more clear but nobody remembers them.

I call bullshit, Play plutonia on UV and you'll see there's parts of the game that are literally unbeatable on first try. Doing "read the manual or die" type gameplay on anything other than roguelikes and RPGs is not good mapping.

Team TNT shined because it had like 6 people doing the work. Plutonia was made by only two members of TNT and it the limited ideas they used showed.

Annoying faggot Final Doomer fanboy here -
Alright, whoever was saying that the weapons do 30% more damage was probably right, now I'm playing through Plutonia "properly" and I can see that. With one small exception:
The vanilla Super Shotgun seems to be way more powerful than the Final Doomer version. I'm using Smooth Doom (so only the animations should be affected) and I swear I'm massacring Revenants with ease using this thing.

I've gained some new appreciation for Smooth Doom though. Once you get used to the slightly offputting monster animations it's really good. I love the way the SSG gibs enemies at close range.

when you press the exit button, time effectively freezes. so even if you're 2 tics away from being splattered by a rocket, the level is still won. this state lasts as long as the intermission screen is up. then the universe is essentially destroyed in entirely when the previous level is freed from memory. the only parts that remain are the player's inventory - even his body is destroyed. but a perfect copy is immediately recreated, of course.
