I actually just closed HL1 to come ask /vr/ about old school shootan games. Had no idea there was a general thread. Good thing I didn't make my own.

Question is this: I want to quit vidya within the next few years but don't feel like I ever game PC games the shot they deserved. Half Life is the only series I ever played on my computer and I know there's more out there. Just bought original Doom games in the Steam sale. What else??

It's the guns and ammo of Chex Quest.
The IFOC invented zorch guns because nothing else worked against the flemoids, conventional weaponry was pointless. So they made teleporter guns that send the flemoids to a different place.
You are now realizing that, because zorchers are a recent invention, the history of the Chex Quest universe actually revolved around traditional guns and weapons.

I can't download the demo file because it says it expired.

The revenant is supposed to not be able to attack you unless you hit the "wrong" switch in that little area; it was the only way I could think to tie it directly to that switch without it being able to shoot at you or hiding it like the other thing in the pillar.

I may make the last jump and the two non secret healths easier, if I have time before the project ends/if that would be allowed. If not, I may make more maps and during compilation fix that.

The teleporter area is supposed to be somewhat easier to dodge the revenant balls if you stay within the pillars or move quickly, but I may have not playtested that well enough. The only hint is on the first two jumps, where you are jumping towards a pillar with an item on it, and the last jump continues the L in the LRL pattern. I tried to put a puzzle in a speedmap and it may not have worked out.

Final Doom; TNT: Evilution
Final Doom; The Plutonia Experiment (hardest official iwad)
I think that's the best way to go, since 64 is a very nice "almost Doom 3" and has a very unique tone and atmosphere to it overall, while TNT and Plutonia slowly (and then very quickly) ramp up the difficulty as you get more and more experienced with the games so they're basically "hard mode" maps. I'd also recommend using a source port instead of DOSbox, even if it's Chocolate Doom.

Downtown single handedly makes me grieve at the thought of replaying Doom 2, but a lot of the maps in general are pretty average or mediocre, and then there's a handful of bad maps that really feel like a slog. The game has some really good and enjoyable maps, but overall Doom 2 just isn't as fun when it comes to replay value. I feel like the fact that it's not episodic also kinda contributes to this, since in Doom 1 you can play through 8/9 maps and be satisfied with stopping there or start off by playing later maps of the game immediately instead of going through dozens of other levels first, but the fact that a lot of mediocre or bad maps are sprinkling throughout the mid and late game it'd kinda be moot I suppose.

hmm, so the stuck revenant is intentional. shooting it definitely allows it to move/attack. but it is just a single revenant, so the whole idea of it being a "trap" was rather lost on me - i just killed it without much of a thought. i think if you wanted more of a "oh heck i pressed the wrong switch" situation, you could have three or four revenants in a teleporter holding area, which are then able to warp in when the first one is able to walk off the pillar.

making the jumps easier would be a simple case of splitting off a corner of the pillar and lowering it a bit, i think.

if you had something like three small poles in the area of the teleporter puzzle, say of heights 8, 16, 24 above the floor, with a health bonus, single rocket, and nothing on them respectively, that would make for a nice hint. i thought maybe you were supposed to always run towards the far-off blue torch but that didn't hold.

i might just make these edits and post the map, you can approve/disapprove and 300manager can take it or not as he feels is appropriate. i think he already accepted my attempt to fix up graveland.

expanding on this because i feel like having a moan. there is no file host that fits all of the following requirements:

>no registration required, let alone an ad-supported non-free upload client
dropbox is dropped.

>enough different people use it to not identify the user
this is why i can't just make my own with ssh upload and cron to clean it once a month. it would commonly identify all of my posts.

all right i made the edits i suggested earlier.

- 3 tiny pillars in one corner of the blue key area, with a rocket and a health potion on the lower two

- three more revenants appear when you press the wrong switch and the first gets out of the way

- cut a corner off the northeast demonface pillar so you can run across there normally. i still fall off a lot when i'm trying to line the jumps up in a hurry (e.g. because there are half a dozen cacodemons around the platform)

- lengthened the four lift platforms surrounding the start by 64 units to ease reaching the side closets

then i died another dozen times trying to record an exit. this map is still super hard. but it does feel like E4M2 so, good job.

I was able to take a sec before class and take a look. I removed that indent in the pillar and changed the floor height to accomplish the same thing without that tab. Changed back the 2 E and W things (secret and speedrunning places) so that the jumps are harder but still possible. Left in everything else you did. Also added that marbleface pillar in the front of the teleporter puzzle area that prevents the HOM in vanilla/chocolate that the project manager added in (not necessarily the same as he did, didn't see the file, but it accomplishes the same thing) that way he doesn't have to do more work later.

I feel like BD, Knee Deep In ZDoom and HD texture packs are a part of a genre of mods i like to describe has the "false enhancement" genre: a bunch of mods that act as improvements or requirements to play a game, only to make things worse.
This is all because they either don't know what/why/how they're changing something or because it doesn't need to be "fixed" in the first place.
This is also why a random mod or WAD, like Demonsteele and Alien Vendetta are always better: they don't see themselves as "improvements" or "better than the actual game", but instead as experiences with their own ideas, while implementing them well.

That didn't really look that good back then either, I don't miss those clunky hunks of shit, but more over, smudge filters don't actually achieve the same effect at all.

Personally, I think modern flat screens give a clean and crisp image with no blur or fuzz distorting it, all while taking up less space, generating less heat, and making no ear piercing noise. Going back to how smudge filters don't replicate the fuzz effect of a CRT display, I think it's actually a fools errand to try to get that effect on a modern display because it'll never look proper, it will just look like, well, you smeared vaseline on a contemporary TV.
It's better in my opinion to focus on the actual strength of modern display, crystal clarity without distortion.

Depends, you can easily be deadly to them, but if you make it so they're extra deadly to you just as well it can make for a pretty precious balance, make it a game of dodging and taking cover and avoiding taking hits at all costs while trying to put in as much pain on them as possible.

It helps to make even the low tier mooks kind of dangerous. Sure they're not smart and they're fragile, but buckshot still hurts you a lot.

Now I disagree with that, combat should always be butt clenching and harrowing, it should induce a feeling of anxiety from the player, because even if you somehow get through combat unscathed, there should still be a price to pay somehow, usually with consuming a resource of some kind

Hiding is the same problem, it comes down to: "Oh no spooky thing, are the doors open? If not, duck under something or hide in a closet." If combat is always an option but not always the best one, when the player gets backed into a corner, THEY themselves have to make the decision of either try to fight, or try to run. If the game has no combat then the game has already dictated to the player that everything has to be avoided in some manner.
A good horror game that did combat was Eternal Darkness: Sanity's requiem.

Here thing. Working on Lost Souls since I've finally decided that them leaving those weird burning impressions after they die sometimes doesn't fit their role. Might keep the ghost, but just let them reform over time instead, only counting kill for the first time they die just so you don't actually have to waste the ammo if you don't want to.
Depends, if it's just intended to be a minimalistic file dump sort of thing then maybe just let people make torrents of the wads and host links to the torrent files, so the whole thing is P2P but with at least one guaranteed seeder. If you're looking to make a more fully-featured site then I'd say do something like that, but also let us link in videos, images, etc of the wad in the page where it's hosted, maybe have users so people can find your other stuff, etc. Just don't get retarded with the upvotes/downvotes and shit. Maybe let people like a mod/mapset but that's about it.

Alright well in that case I'm going to assume you're working with something that even a text-based browser can handle, and in that case I'd say allow anonymous file uploads with a hash of the uploader's IP as part of the uploader name (like Anonymous [4b84b15bff6ee5796152495a230e45e3d7e947d9] as the name or something. Maybe truncate the hash) but also allow people who want to have their name attached to files to make a simple account which attaches their name to the file. Just don't get carried away with ratings systems, comments, upvotes, etc since that always turns every site into a cesspit. I'd say the properties of a file should be Uploader, Downloads, Linked media (as a list of embedded files, which can be shown as text for basic browsers, and that's it. Maybe likes/recommends or whatever if you absolutely must add at least one ego-stroke mechanic.

I'm not going to give myself an award for HND.
Besides, there's too many other really good gameplay mods out this year. Just off the top of my head, Doom Delta, MetaDoom, Space Hunter, Kriegsland, D4T, and Final Doomer are all really solid gameplay mods, and I'm sure if I sat down and thought of more there'd be other standouts. Xaser's looking to have Necrodoom 1.0'd and on /idgames, so that'd be fucking rad. And Kegan says he wants to get GMOTA 1.0 out before the end of the year, too.
Not to mention there's always the October/November rush of releases, there's likely a whole ton of other gameplay mods just around the corner.

2017 is a good year for gameplay mods.
