Added a couple more wads, redid the Newschool section in light of the death of ZDoom, fixed the iwad link, and since I've seen a lot of questions along the lines of "why isn't my mod showing up on the start list???" I added a section about that, too.
I'd say this is pretty much complete, honestly. Unless something dramatically changes in the future (another source port comes out, iwad links die again, etc), there isn't gonna be much need for updates.

D-Touch actually has the most comfortable pseudo-dualstick setup of all phone shooters I've played.
Aiming with it is fine, better than analogue stick at least, and you can restrict vertical movement for even easier control.
The lack of crisp movement control of the keyboard somewhat sucks, but it's manageable.

If you plan on playing any weapon mods, make sure to disable or comment out in the code any recoil effects, (i did that with gunc aster) or you gonna have a bad time.

DTouch also has PRBoom support so if GZdoom runs like shit, you can always use that.

Yeah, An image board is great for sharing images, but not so much a "hey here's my map, see what we can do to fix it up and push it out"

This would allow for even the freshest of newcomers or most experienced ones to push their map to attention before it's done, allow others to play and modify it, and then pass this back and forth until it's satisfactory.

Keeping notes, convenient DL links, and other things is not as useful on an imageboard- which is just that, an imageboard.

Whoever made this map is fixated with Boom's scrolling features.
I swear there's something that scrolls in basically every room. Pic related is supposed to be static on a screen, I'm pretty sure, but the effect is made by putting a lamp texture on a surface and making it scroll insanely fast. Which doesn't look like static on a CRT screen, it looks like a rectangular grid pattern spazzing out on a screen.
If he'd have whipped up a basic television static texture (literally half a minute in photoshop), this effect might have actually worked.

There was also a series of mazelike hallways with a pattern of gray tiles and blue carpet, which looked ok, but given that there were about hundreds of linedefs between each enemy and me for them to make checks over (they could all see me through the gaps at the bottom of the walls), performance wasn't too hot here, they should probably have just made a couple of custom flats and saved a lot of effort and performance.
That there were invisible teleport spots dotting this little maze sporadically did make it hectic and confusing.

it seems to depend on how near to real-time the communication channel over which the event is administrated is. the original doomworld speedmapping events were done over IRC on a strict time limit, you had to be in the channel at the time when the theme was announced, then 100 minutes later that was it. latterly more relaxed events have taken place over forums where not everyone is being watched on a timer.

wow this one is nasty. it killed me twice. don't linger on the platform you start on, it's too dangerous. instead run around in the lava until the radsuit runs out, hopefully you've cleared out enough of the surrounding enemies by then. if i did this again i'd press the unkeyed button and escape into a side area more quickly.

then i nearly died a third time, having gotten a timely berserk box i almost immediately lost it to a well-aimed revenant missile, then after clawing back some more health and armour, nearly died a fourth time to revenant missiles which reduced me to 1% health, where i was stuck until i could remove all four revenants on sniper towers and be able to stop to think.

here i had to pass a teleporter puzzle to reach the next key. it is not too long (not sure what the hint is - my automap shows teleporter lines) but still, not a fan. fortunately afterwards i had 200H/100G which lasted the rest of the map. i was expecting "something deeply unpleasant" to emerge from the single full-height pillar in the yellow key area and wasn't disappointed, fortunately the plasma gun pain chance roulette was good and i took no damage, and the end was a case of circlestrafing and watching the fireworks.

possible bug: the revenant on sector 85 might have been having some difficulty attacking until i shot it which allowed it to move, or that might have been my imagination.

i am concerned some areas need rather long jumps to reach, eg. optional sectors 101/102/106 with useful health, and worse, some of the required pillar jumps off the start platform. the last one to the exit especially seems impossible to reach without straferunning, strafe40 works but is unreliable in doom2 complevel unless your run-up is very precise, only strafe50 seems consistently reliable. i could see players with less inclination for speedrunning tricks being annoyed by these.

finally some extra medikits and a second radsuit in the lava around the start platform would not be unwelcome.

"lots of plasma" tends to imply lots of high-health monsters and a bfg. whereas "lots of low-health monsters" tends to mostly shotgun/chaingun use. if there is a plasma gun at all it will only have a small amount of ammo, reserved for emergencies (e.g. sudden archviles).

i have iwads in /usr/share/games/doom installed via dpkg (i stuck all the iwads in a .deb so i wouldn't accidentally modify/corrupt them)

i have a directory full of the most common megawads and other popular / quality releases that i come back to often, this is on the spinning rust storage drive

finally in my home directory i have about a half-dozen to a dozen wads i'm currently focused on, each unzipped into its own subdirectory so i can just type "doom2 blah/* -warp 1" which will pick up blah.wad and blah.deh if it exists, or in those rare cases where you have a separate graphics wad, without having several files per wad release in the same directory, this also avoids the problem of generic filenames like readme.txt clashing.

the rest of my wad collection is outsourced to the cloud. i don't have a local /idgames mirror, i should probably set one up, but there's always something else to do, and downloading from the berlin mirror is so fast.

i don't have anything like 20GB of wads, so you got me beat there.

I know it sounds defeatist but Hellcore is better treated as an exploration and atmospheric wad. Meaning it's better to load up an overpowered gameplay mod with it, or at least use Custom Doom to buff yourself.
Slaughtermaps have their own appeal, but Hellcore is all over the place and I don't even treat it as a serious mapset because of this.

i think what happened was the authors were old school doomers who started making a megawad, but it dragged on as these things tend to do. in the meantime they drifted off, playing newer games, only coming back to doom 8 years later in 2004 (probably thanks to the emergence of Doom Builder) to patch up and release Hellcore 1.0.

This was a mix of low-detail 1996 maps and tuned-up works that really clashed. several maps were outright broken. it was poorly received and more or less written off. so they spent 2 years salvaging the best parts and making a more focused 12 map episode out of them.

this was released to *very* mixed reception in 2006, because as you've noticed, it was influenced by lots of different newer games the authors had played in their time away from doom, from horror games to action games, but with the common theme of much higher realistic fidelity. thus the maps were beautiful in that sense, but the gameplay was all over the place, and much of it slower-paced puzzle solving in a horror environment. not really suited to what people expected from a doom levelset. one of the maps was basically a cutscene.

what really bothered me personally was the authors attitude to bugs, basically saying it was a boom wad but "requires zdoom until other ports become more forgiving", like yeah we're not here to wipe your arses for you, lads, learn to map properly, you're oldschool enough to know better.
