Fucking this actually

Bought EB game when it released in '95 and spent years with no one to talk to about it or who knew anything about it. It was a massive flop and anyone who did know about it just complained about the "shitty" graphics and battle system.

These days its gone completely to the other extreme. Its turned into some super "overrated" game that everyone bitches about because everyone loves it now or something.

I was an idea for liking the game back then, and am an idea for liking it now, but for two competently different reasons. I have no idea but it makes me pull my hair out.

I think its just one of those games that really benefits from proper context. This is an extremely 90s game, for 90s gamers, from its video game cliche parodies to its cultural references. Its not going to hold the same weight to people outside of that 90s context. To them its just going to be a "funny and goofy" game. Its like watching Hot Fuzz without being a fan of buddy cop or action movies. Its still good, but it won't be nearly as appreciated as someone who is really into the genre and can get into the head space of the creator.

The appreciation of EB these days has devolved into immature humor and youtube style obnoxiousness, and that drives me fucking crazy since there really is so much subtly and subtext to so much of the game that goes over most younger fans heads.

Its not a perfect game by any stretch but I don't think you can get the full appreciation of it "unless you were there". Sometimes I wish the game stayed obscure...

Nobody gave a fuck about any of those games but because youtubers talked about it, viewers think they're valuable and want to show off how big their E-penis is. It makes me sound like a hipster but most of the time such a "underrated" game always feels mediocre to me when I play it while playing games that are still relatively "obscure" like Plok, Power Blade and Super Battletank 2 are a lot more interesting to me.

To be fair, it was apparently a pack-in game so a lot of sales were probably due to that, but nevertheless I think that would keep it from being overlooked and would similarly mean that a lot of Genesis owners likely have some memory of it. I'd either forgotten or was never aware that it was a pack-in title until I looked it up.

Maybe people thought it was shitty back then, I don't really know. My first exposure to it as a kid was in a hotel arcade in the mid to late 90s - I thought it was an awesome game, honestly.

Although I have to say that a lot of the hype around this game is partially the fault of the old school reseller scum who almost always painted it as some rare mystical RPG that "could have changed games forever if we'd only given it a chance" or "was so rare, almost no one got a chance to buy it when it first came out."

Yeah, what >>4211789 said. It's not that those games suddenly become unplayable because they're more well known after it and in some cases it might make more people try them out, which in turn gives them higher chances to be able to still discuss them at places like this. Hell, that's pretty much what happened to Umihara Kawase and I'm glad I found out about it even though I never heard of it back in the 90s.

The problem is that it also means there'll be more insufferable and ignorant "retro gaymerz" who simply go out and collect that shit just because someone else told them they should get it and not because it might be interesting for them.

It's a single plane 2D beat-em-up, it heavily leaned on digitized speech as an attraction feature, anthro chacters etc. It didn't "age well" but not aging well is the opposite of the topic of this thread.

But in all seriousness, I wonder what kinds of people run out to buy these random old games after some eceleb talks about them. Are they hipster bandwagoners eager to fit in? People afraid that the price of the game will spike so they buy it "just in case?" People who meant to buy it long ago but never did finally deciding that now is the time... before it's too late? Speculators who hope to drive up the price and have a resell opportunity so they can profit off of the people from the other groups? All of the above? I guess I just don't see the appeal in paying hundreds if not a thousand dollars on some mass-produced retail game. If you're going to throw down the big bucks, why not get something more unique. Is it even that rare of a game? Pricecharting seems to show pretty regular sales of complete copies.

Yeah, I saw lots of Nintendo power and game store advertisements for all the usual snes jrpgs, but FF7 was when they actually advertised bigtime, with commercials and t-shirts and shit.

It isn't even that bad of a game, most people just hate on it because of how hard AVGN meme on it.

It IS that bad a game, it's just that would get zero attention today if it weren't for AVGN.

I'm not saying its AMAZING GOOD GREAT GAME, but it doesn't deserve all the hate game gets. It's mediocre at best but not one of the worst games in the world, because there are tons of worst games out there.

Tonic Trouble is a mediocre games.
Puss n' Boots in a mediocre game.
Quest 64 is a mediocre game.

Dr. J & Mr. H is legitimately bad.

But the thing is the NES has tons of bad games just like it. In an alternate timeline that could have been about NES Superman that James made that early AVGN on, and if so then Superman would be the memed game that everyone gawked at instead, but even that case it wouldn't take away from the fact that Superman on NES is also a legitimately bad game.

The Japanese version of this game is great.

First of all, it's way more balanced and fair, making it a better game. No bullshit 1-hit deaths in the driving stages or damage sponge enemies.

Secondly, the Japanese title is MAD CITY, which is fucking rad.

Yeah I gotta say, the first time I saw someone wearing a fucking Final Fantasy shirt (and it wasn't even at a con) broke my brain a little.

I confess I had super cheesy wall scrolls of the huge render of Midgar, Cloud on his bike and Aerith on my dorm room walls.
