No.

People here can't agree on ANYTHING, especially not on a controversial game that has the frequenters divided as sharply as this one.

It seems that people here either love it or hate it, and no matter how often we have this thread (or the one claiming the very opposite), these people do not move a single inch in their opinions.

Threads like this are absolutely pointless and a waste of space, unless you enjoy watching people get all riled up over nothing and receiving some delicious (you)s. If that's the case, then congrats, good job.

beware that castlevania 2 is more "rpg"-like because you have quests, hidden items and secrets, then there's symphony of the night that is an exploration game about collecting items, but you can play as ritcher if you want to get a more platform experience.

you could try n64 games but the controls are fucking horrid.

Classicvanias in terms of quality:

Rondo Of Blood > III > I > Bloodlines > IV > Dracula X

Bear in mind, IV is the easiest, but not very representative of the series. I would personally recommend starting with Castlevania I on the NES, even though it's rough on first-timers. I love RoB, and it's easier than the NES games, but it plays like a tribute to its predecessors, so I recommend saving it for later.

With Metroidvania, you really can't go wrong with starting at Symphony Of The Night. It's less polished than some of the later entries in the series, like Aria Of Sorrow, but it's a nice place to start, and really one of the essential games that everyone into retro gaming should play. Also, its aesthetics are absolutely gorgeous. Stay away from the XBLA version, though. It doesn't feel good to use an analog stick, since movement is digital, and it doesn't have I Am The Wind at the end.

>Inverted Castle is a chore because the platforming is boring. Consider the Super Metroid Rotation hack and how interesting the platforming challenges are since you can't just fly around right off the bat. You have to use the tools you have and gain in interesting ways while in the same environment. SotN is just, fuck, the levels are so bland it just feels like an aesthetic change. The maps are not memorable.
>Have to beat the game to play as the fun modes
>Can chow down on health items and shit on a whim
>There are dingy RPG elements that just bloat the menus and barely matter at all
I have no clue why people rank it anywhere close to Super Metroid. Must be the graphics and music.

>> No.4202998

I think it's sort of overrated but still alright.

I mean, for instance the inverted castle seems more rushed, less detailed, bosses are more forgettable.

I'm playing it nowadays on a PSTwo and it has a lot of slowdowns. It doesn't exactly look good when you do that on purpose by putting 70 fucking octopuses in the same goddamn room. Though maybe this is a hardware problem that is not reproduced on a PS1? I'm not sure. Still pretty disappointing.

Then you have the localization, the lack of a display adjustment option which half of the fucking games have, an equipment system that seems pretty green (I understand that, being a first in the series with such system) so experimentation at times seems rather pointless when you have something that's objectively superior...

It could just have been done better overall. But I think it's really good still.

DXC > (tAR) Rondo > IV > X> (tAR) > Chronicles> Bloodlines 3 > 2 > 1 > VK > Adventure > Belmonts Revenge > Legends

If you mean in terms of challenge than it's HC> x68k > 3 > 1 > Adventure Rebirth > Bloodlines > VK > 2 > 4 = Rondo > etc etc

If you mean it's gameplay (mechanics) this is subjective for the most part but absolutes are:
3 > 1
Belmonts Revenge > Adventure
1 > (arguably Haunted Castle)

If you mean overall quality on level design alone there's no way Rondo would be #1

Lament of Innocence was an interesting game with a comically terrible plot that's full of holes the more you think about it. Whip mechanics weren't special but as a game it's alright. Has lots of zingy one liners that never sounded good in my mind or yours but which are memorable nonetheless "I'll kill you AND the night!"

Curse of Darkness is the correct way you add story in that doesn't matter. Devil forging was a fun way to extend the length of a game with the secrets tied to them. The weapon combat wasn't bad. The enemies ALL having different steal triggers was likewise good. Overall a rather enjoyable metroidvania for the time.

I would say experience both of them. (some of) The music is also good for the games. They ain't got that 80's 90's synth pop feel and are that neoclassical what not but it's not unpleasant.

All the games were pretty good until the reboot by Kojima. The thing about SOTN wasn't that it was just a copy paste halfway through the game that you couldn't get to unless you had one item and the useless alternate forms that you really didn't need since you can skip half the beginning with the wolf form; that sucked but what made it a great game was all the items you could get, the artwork, the music; the game had an amazing atmosphere that still hasn't been matched to this day. Too bad I never got to play the US version with the shit acting until I was older, grew up in Japan so only play the JP one.

They did in the adventure rebirth, dracula x Chronicles, Chronicles, etc etc.

In fact relatively the metroidvanias sold like shit. SotN may have been a crowning moment in the series popularity but it ended there with much of that being attributed to the oversaturation of the damn things in the series. Each iga-style metroidvania ended up selling worse than the next (many times doing worse than the above mentioned examples) and culminated in the series being handed over to mercurysteam who proceeded to finish hammering the nail in the coffin with LoS II a game that struggled to do better than Judgement of all things.

Metroidvania's being made that followed the formula was for no other reason than the cheap cost of reusing assets for the umpteenth time and the fact that it's the type of game Iga liked the most.

SOTN is all about exploring the castle and being in awe of the different environments, enemy designs and most of all, the incredible 2D sprites. Enjoying the whimsical music while exploring the castle is one of the best gaming memories I have.

Just because you read some guides online and farmed for a Crissaegrim or abused a shield rod weapon to melt through enemies doesn't mean the game is bad. Also all the bonus features like Richter mode were just icing on the cake. It's game packed full of content. If you want more of a challenge, just don't abuse the cheap shit and do challenge runs on your own.

Vast exaggeration. There are a couple of overpowered weapons and a ton of weird ones that are interesting and fun to play with while not being overpowered. Pic related

Most of the weapons in the game are just simple upgrades over each other with minor differences between them, like element type.
>Transform into a bat, a wolf, mist, double jump, rocket jump etc is still a good amount.
None of those are really interesting. Rocket Jump would have been far better if it were an innate skill and not a piece of equipment you had to equip to use it, having to go into the menu to equip it every time is just monotonous. The Bat had the flying charge but compared to all the stuff the Speed Booster in Metroid can do it's horrifically dull.
>These two feel completely subjective.
As opposed to saying something isn't interesting or exciting? A cop out answer. There's just a lot of long, boring corridors or long vertical platforms.
The combat is unsatisfying. Even though the sprites are great the animation is very lacking, there is no weight behind any of Alucard's strikes, particularly the sword animation.

>laughably contrarian
Look I understand where you're coming from. But if somebody wanted to make an argument on why SotN (or any metroidvania really) are the worst "Castlevania games" they could make an extremely legitimate case that would be respectable. Not like that's the case here. He's just being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.

Anyways that's not what I wanted to talk about
> If you want more of a challenge, just don't abuse the cheap shit and do challenge runs on your own.

Not abusing cheap shit is indeed not farming for a crissaegrim or abusing shield rod. But you forget that your spells exist and the game overlevels you merely by playing. Get lost once and the game will never be able to catch back up to you. On the topic of challenge runs, those are never exactly going to be an acceptable counterargument for the statement "the game is too easy" you know?

To me it's only real problem is the leveling thing. I find the weird weapons a lot more fun and there's so many if them It's easy not to use the broken ones. But even starting in luck mode you just level way too easily.

If they made it like Simon's Quest where you can only level so much in a given area or off a given monster it would be a lot better. Or ditch xp altogether even better. But being able to grind till it's easy was the whole point of sotn in the first place so whatever.

I'm playing it for the first time, just got up to the inverted castle and beat the bat, Frankenstein and Doppelganger40.
Most of the game I find fairly boring. Weapons are all samey, having to go into the pause menu to do fucking anything is really annoying (seriously, L2 doesn't fucking do anything. Couldn't that have been a slot for consumables? Especially considering a lot of weapons are FUCKING 2-HANDED) and the locations/enemies/level design is not that interesting.
Then there are moments where I'm having a great time which is usually only on select boss battles. Granfaloon was super fun, so was Succubus and a few others.
Then at random times the game pulls off really cheap and annoying shit like knockbacking me into a corner and getting stunlocked over and over by Doppelganger40. I couldn't even fucking move until I died.
I actually don't mind the voice acting but yeah the Inverted Castle feels tacked on and not thought out and half the items being worthless is really crap.
I also wish I could fucking throw out shit like Red Rust and Basilard at this point. I'm shocked that nobody has made a patch that adds some Quality-Of-Life changes to the game because then it would be actually unbelievably good instead of mediocre that people claim is perfect.

Neither the best nor the worst.

The music is brilliant. The visuals are great compared to the titles that came after. The rest... eh. Inverted castle really seems rushed, difficulty ain't really balanced, some items seem to be pointless, the equipment system could be done differently. They shove you with content that you might not find at all because in all honesty this game isn't challenging enough to need even half of it. I know some people love to collect stuff but really, there's not just that much incentive to spend time on trying to get some random drop from any enemy in the game.

It must be because I played dozens of "metroidvanias" but it's quite flawed.

It's from a time before widespread internet useage fir faqs, strategies and item lists. I think it was designed with the idea that someone could play through it several times and find different loot each time to make the runs different.

Not just look up what the few most broken things are and then rush to farm them. It's still far from a perfect game but I think the design choices make more sense when you take that context into account.

Curse of Darkness is more game than Lament of Innocence while also having a plot that isn't a complete pile of shit. And Dracula X Chronicles at least has a version of SotN that's still inferior to the saturn version.

>> No.4218507

>>4218487
They both had literally the same story. "M-muh ex-bff kill my gf!" It's so bland that it makes me want to puke. The entire Belmont clan for a thousand years is fighting Dracula because he killed their ancestor's girlfriend. Pathetic.

As far as gameplay goes, Lament of Innocence at least had some puzzles and a couple challenging boss fights. Curse of Darkness was just repetitively hacking your way through corridors (Lament of Innocence had a shit ton of that too, but at least it wasn't 100% that). Fights were all trivial and the only challenge stemmed from not bashing your head into the wall while waiting for the enemy to graciously allow you to steal from it.

And I just played through both of these games literally last week so I'd say I'm pretty objective on this. No nostalgia or blurry memories here.

>> No.4218526

>>4218507
>they both had the same story
The subplot is literally "mathias was in charge of everything". And then we have to suspend our belief that Mathias now Dracula was just dicking around for hundreds of years not doing anything. The entirety of LoI centered around getting your girlfriend and then later avenging her this is true. And Curse of Darkness was completely about killing the shit out of Issac. But the execution in both is extremely different.

To begin with there are more supporting characters in Curse of Darkness such as St Germain, Zead, Issac, and Julia who show up more often for the (except Julia)""""""story""""""

In Lament of Innocence you have Leon "I'll kill you AND the night" Belmont, Rinaldo "and then... I followed her!" Gandolfi. Mathias and Walter. But very few of them matter for any substantial amount of time with walter having less on screen presence in this game than Death in Rondo. The difference between this game and Curse of Darkness is that Curse of Darkness reveals that most of the malice and dickery was because of dracula's curse. Though his resurrection and the plot was stupid.

On gameplay: Neither are hard. But as a metroidvania CoD is just flat out better. Igavanias are easy overall. LoI's forgotten one is indeed harder than Legion but both of them aren't hard in their respective normal modes. While CoD sports a more engaging hard "crazy" mode.

To mention of nostalgia. I play both of these games yearly as part of a marathon stream I do every october. So blurry memories are not exactly a thing I suffer. I can quote some scenes in LoI line for line just because of how over the top and endearing they are.

I enjoy them both. But as a game CoD is just better. The exploration aspect of it is much higher, there are a LOT more secrets than just 3 elemental bosses in LoI, there's special interaction with access to location that is dependent on monster, and there's even a battle tower that is suitably hard.

Nice inb4's but while I do consider MGS one of the top ps1 games, as it was cutting edge at the time it came out and completely unique, it didn't appeal to me as strongly as Parasite Eve did.

Like I like SotN. And I can pop that fucker in at any point in time and have a blast. But calling it "the best psx" game sets the bar extremely low giving the number of actual mechanical flaws, such as reverse castle + the final toccata, overleveling the entire game, how crazy simple magic is, and the item and weapon clutter where upgrades end up being sidegrades until halfway through the game.
