4197124 No.4197124 [Reply] [Original]

Building my first MAME cabinet. I scored a Golden Tee '99 cab from a local thrift store for only $25! It didn't work, that's why they let it go so cheap. Got it home, plugged it in, nothing. Luckily it had the keys with it, opened the back, and the plug was disconnected from the power supply. Plugged that back in and it worked!

Digging around in the cab, which was just plain black, I saw that it started life as a Killer Instinct. Was stoked, but alas, all that artwork was destroyed when whomever in the past converted it to the GT'99.

Decided to try to strip the paint off, and lo and behold, the original artwork was intact! Ordered a new OE marquee and CPO, some Happ controls, etc. Making big progress on it, I should be up and running in just a few more weeks. I got a JAMMA to USB interface and an ArcadeVGA to drive the W-G monitor.

>Building mame
>going to gut cab
Well I don't like that. Original cabs/parts are getting harder and harder to come by not to ment-
>it's a golden tee
I have no problem with this
>oh shit! It's actually a KI!!
How cool is that? Congrats anon.
>still going to convert to mame
I hate you

Oh crap. I misread. Your not going to make it a mame. Sry. No excuse but I've been drinking and posting kek. Congrats again anon.

I want to be able to play more than one game. So sue me. At least I'll still be able to play KI.

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. I'm restoring the cabinet back to it's former glory. The only thing I won't have is the actual KI Jamma board.

I'm not hacking it up at all. I actually saved it from being a wretched fucking Golden Tee. Besides, being Jamma, if I ever want to sell it as an original cab, go on eBay, get the board, plug it in and ride. It would take literally 10 minutes to do that, only because I'd have to re-wire the kick harness.

You realize that's a KI2 cab in your pic right? I assume that's not the cab you're in the process of cleaning up can we see your work in progress or are you too worried about criticism? There are a lot of extremely critical anons here.

>>4197213
The Golden Tee kept the harness from the KI intact? That's great news! How bad was the control panel butchered to put in the track ball?
Does it still have all the KI cutouts maybe just plugged or covered with plexi? You might want to consider buying pic related to keep the kick harness intact.

Yes, of course I realize it's a KI2. That artwork was hidden under black paint. I'm assuming it was painted when first converted to GT99.

Whomever converted it to GT99 ripped out the original harness so I bought a new universal JAMMA harness to attach to my J-Pac. The original control panel was gone as well, so I made this one out of 3/4" MDF. I got the reproduction Marquee from eBay and the repro CPO from Gameongraphix.com.

When I first got it, it looked like this, with satin black paint on the sides. I used CitriStrip to clean the paint off and found the original artwork 100% intact. That's when I decided to take the cabinet back to it's original state.

Before I realized what I had, I had planned to rebuild the control panel into a 4 player NBA Jam/TMNT size, but because the original artwork looks so good, I'm going to preserve it, leave this cab totally unmolested except for running MAME.

I'm even leaving the original monitor in, too, which is why I got my ArcadeVGA 3000 video card for the PC I'm running.

Please for the love of god OP don't be one of those guys who goes through all the effort of building a MAME cab but then slaps in a shitty 16:9 monitor unless you're planning on playing something like Street Fighter IV on it as well.

>>4197537
Nope, read the post above yours: I'm keeping the original Wells-Gardner 24" horizontal monitor in it. I even bought a special video card so my PC could drive it natively.

I promise, I'm doing this right.

So that is your actual cabinet. I guess I realize now that's Golden Tee on the monitor lol. What can I say, I'm very impressed with your restoration! There's no way I would have bothered with the time and expense of rewiring a harness if I was just going to plug it into a j-pac in fact I'm currently procrastinating just on adding buttons to my own project cabinet and it already has a fully wired jamma harness. It's really cool that you had the pride to make it completely authentic even on the inside. I guess you just have it operating as GT for now while you configure the mame rig. There's a guy on Amazon who'll do a hyperspin setup for you for $50 including the games which saves a lot of downloading

Correct

That's probably worth it. I've heard Hyperspin is a beast to get right. Thanks.

that cabinet is the gayest one that I've ever seen. Everytime you're playing with the first stick you're grabbing a big black cock (just look at it).

Well, it wasn't really mint when I got it. I've done a shit ton of work to it, and I've got more to go.

But yeah, when I'm done, I'm hoping it'll be right.

OP is lucky as fuck. I dont see cabinets around me and figure I'll have to build one myself.
No idea what to use for the screen, but nothing else matters.

Cool, you should let me get a copy of your HDD if it works good since your setup is practically identical to the one I've been procrastinating about lol. Or at least check back in and let me know how complete and proper it ends up being.

If you're going to build your own, it doesn't need to be nearly so big if you use an LCD. The depth of these things is due almost entirely to the MASSIVE fucking monitor these things have.

I suggest you join the MAME Arcade Cabinet Builders Facebook page. There's even a guy on there that has a CNC router that will cut the pieces for you and ship them to you as a "knock down" cabinet. When the flat box of wood shows up, just glue and screw it together!

>>4199414
I'd be willing to do this if you'd trust sending me a 4TB hard drive. That's really up to you. I can use G4L to clone the drive I'll be getting. We can talk offline if you want to. My dummy e-mail addy is beaver DOT fan AT ymail DOT com
