Just played through Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within. I had my reservations at first and the first chapter was actually quite weak but the game kinda grew on me as the storyline progressed.

The acting wasn't actually that bad, it's only too bad that Gabriel's character had to have to worst actor in the game. In the end his virgin mannerisms, forehead scrunching and agitated handwaving turned out to be quite funny even if they contradicted his character from GK1 quite a lot.

It was nice a lot of German characters actually spoke a lot of German. Having studied some courses I got to appreciate Grace's attempts to speak the language as I would probably myself be on the same level. Might've sounded horrible for a native speaker but fortunately for my gaming experience, I'm not.

My mind was blown when I replayed it (after finishing it once normally) this time trying to see everything that I missed in the first one (by turning back the time in the menu).

Probably the most amazing exploration bonus is that you can see the bomber construct his bomb if you hang outside his compartment (I mean this literally, if you hang on the outside of the train = there's absolutely no incentive to do this at that time) and look through his window.

We're all biased because of how/when/and who we were when we played said games but some of my favorites are:

Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Grim Fandango
The whole Monkey Island series(I can even get some enjoyment from escape as bad as it was)
King's Quest 6
Leisure Suit Larry 5,6,7
Sam 'n' Max
Loom
Kyrandia 2
The Quest for Glory series
Conquests of the Longbow
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Toonstruck
Beavis and Butthead in Virtual Stupidity
The Dig

I could probably come up with more but that was just by looking through my ScummVM, GOG and steam folders.

King's Quest was an incredible success on the PC. The games sold extremely well and they always pushed the envelope in terms of tech. They were fairly praised in the 90's and slightly into the 2000's.

But, nobody talks about King's Quest anymore. It's not recommended for/by beginners or experts. More of a footnote now.

Quest for Glory is a fantastic series. QFG2 is even fun with the help of a walkthrough.

Simon the Sorcerer 2 was the best one...though to be fair, I only played 1, 2 and tried 3d where my heart broke because it was horrible. 2 was awesome. Simon was a douche, and at one point you can watch some fantasy creatures play a dungeons and dragons game set in the real world. Funny shit.

Man, I loved adventure games. Still do. Had this funny idea that I'd go and finish every single one ever made in my lifetime. Well, the ones I can play. via dosbox or good old games, or hell, even contemporary ones. A lot of them that were for Windows 95 or some shit I can't get to run no matter what. what, absolutely not
revolutionizing a genre doesn't have anything to do with selling well. All that matters is whether other designers learned from it, the players don't contribute anything to the genre.

That's like denying that the velvet underground's first record revolutionised britpop/rock because it only sold 30k or whatever. It's moronic.

TLE revolutionised the genre because it set a new bar for adventure games that many devs continued to measure themselves against from that point on.

There's only one more, that being the Last crusade (we never count the desktop adventures one). It's very primitive looking compared to Fate of the Atlantis, but ti has some nice stuff going for it. First of all, you can punch Hitler straight in the face (and die, but it's fun either way), and multiple ways of how to get stuff done.

Like getting through that one nazi castle from the movies with differing ways how to do it, or having something signed by the Fuhrer himself to ease your way further in the game and so on and on. I'd play it, but it's nowhere near as good as Fate of the Atlantis.

If you only played the 3d one and could stomach it, then yes. You are in for a treat when compared. the first one is kind of more "childish", but it's still a good game, and it's lead up to two where Simon is a douchebag. I recommend it.

O SHIT

That game gave me nightmares as a kid because of the bank robbery in the beginning of the game. When I watched it I first thought it was funny and that the security guy only got covered in ketchup. But then the bank teller's brain got blown off with a shotgun and I ran away from the computer and hid behind a chair.

From the newer stuff Blackwell series was a pleasent surprise. It got better game after game and it's a nice story that clicks together in it's four parts. It's not perfect, but pretty damn good.

I like LSL6 is better for some reason. It feels like a peak of the series. Maybe it's nostalgia or maybe it's because I really didn't like the cartoonish style of LSL7.

I was stoked for Teen Agent when I played the demo back then. Looked great, and was funny. Then I got the full version and honestly, the best bits were in the demo, and the game was short as shit.

>>4222880
It had Dennis Hopper. That alone makes it awesome.

>>4220670
That's a pity. Both the first and the second Gabriel Knight were really good, special games. As adventure games, as horror games, the atmosphere was always great. The third one we do not speak of, for it was shit.

>>4220535
I agree. I loved LSL6. I loved the setting, I loved the chicks (the gym chick and the one you end up in the spa with, the redhead - were awesome), the puzzles were funny, the written comments on everything you did were hilarious and overall it was a good game.

Love for Sail gets a lot of praise, but I personally think Shape Up is the pinnacle of the series.
