Because they got the JP atmosphere right. It's dark, it's gloomy, it's full of free roaming dinosaurs wanting to eat your guts. It feels like you're in the middle of a tropical jungle hell.
Then probably the controls and overall frustrating game design the game has. It not only is set on a scary place, but you're also kind of lost in a maze, with controls that don't help much.

This game gave me a lot of anxiety back in the day. I guess I had a lot more patience for bullshit too, because the frame rate gets absurd at some points and the controls are frustrating. It was very effective at establishing atmosphere and I still love the music. Those fucking raptors were impossible to kill as well, the best you could do was knock them unconscious and run like hell before they woke up. Matter of fact ima play this shit rn
