What are some good retro fighting games and why is Virtua Fighter 2 the best out of all of them?

Fighting Vipers, Virtua Fighter, Tekken...all good fighting games in the 32 bit era. The first game I owned on a Sega Saturn was Virtua Fighter 2. I knew of the arcade game & that's what drew me to buying this game.

Because it is not possible to milk it every half year with a new entry, so Sega is not supporting it in any way, shape, or form.

>buy a second hand japanese memory cart
>comes with a vf2 save, among many other games
>try the game with the AI mode from the former owner's save
>completely destroys my ass

I don't have any friends who are into VF2, they're more into 2D fighting games, so getting this save motivated me to start playing VF2 again.

While it's true that VF2 has a "learning" option that records your style and adjusts the AI against it, the game is stupid hard even without that.

If you think Mortal Kombat has a cheating AI then you never played VF2.

They're too hard to get into and the characters themselves are bland as shit.

But the gameplay is great if you put some time into it.

Because VF 2 improves heavily from the first title like went from 30 to 60 fps, improved models, and all this was done in a year.

T B H the graphics still impress me to this date

Don't forget running at a much higher resolution. AM2 were wizards.

Why is VF3 considered inferior?

Probably the uneven stages, which is why they went back to the flat stages for 4 & 5.

Because by the time it got a console port, it was up against Soul Calibur.

For 1996, VF3 was wizardry, and had so many gameplay nuances that because considered fighting game standards only a decade later.

I loved VF3tb on Dreamcast, but like others said - it couldn't compete with Soul Calibur or the flashiness of Dead or Alive 2.

Virtua Fighter 4 brought the series back and it was a huge seller on PS2.

It only seems like it from the perspective of a console owner. When the game came out it was unmatched for years in graphics and fighting engine. When we got the console port the game was almost 4 years old and had it's successor right around the corner. And even the DC port was a inferior version to the old acrade one.

This. VF3 came out the year the N64 came out, I remember always going to VF3 if it was available whenever I went to the arcades, just because it was the best looking game.

However, I think 1 and 2 left more of an impact. Now that I think of it, VF3 arcade was always available for me, which meant not a lot of people played it, at least around the places I frequented. I mostly played the CPU unless I was with friends.

Because VF2 is so obscenely ahead of its time in mechanical depth and technical specification that it completely shits on everything else from its time.

I'm a tourneyfag for heaps of shit, and VF2 blows me away just as a game.

The VF3 Model 3 hardware was groundbreaking with it's Lockheed Real3D chipset doing stuff you would not see anywhere else way back then. It was an expensive cabinet.

Only 3 years later the Naomi would be common place and model 3 was not a big deal anymore.

3 years is an eternity for digital hardware, however.

Such commodity arcade systems, based off console hardware, make sense in many ways but are not as interesting as the custom bespoke systems which differentiated the arcade experience from home gaming. Once that gap closed, the arcades lost one more raison d'etre, but the investment necessary for arcade hardware to best consoles and PCs after the 90s would be ridiculous, if even possible.

Games like VF3 were the end of an era that went back to the days of games like Defender, Asteroids, or (the best) polygonal I Robot blowing away the home experience on a 2600.

I asked "why is VF3 considered inferior" because I'm regularly surprised to see so many people dismissing it, while it was so incredible looking and so smooth to play in the arcades around 1997.

I thought the negative opinions were based on some gameplay flaw that only appeared to very experienced players (the dodge button? uneven levels?), but no. It's just ignorant people who weren't even there back then.

Rival schools is the best 3d fighter. The first two bloody roars are good. Virtua Fighter 1 smokes VF2. SoulCalibur jamma is decent. I like dead or alive +++, The two bushido blades are decent. Fuck tobal rectally.
