What are the best versions of Wizardry? Specially the first three ones, in which there seems to be a divide between SFC and PS.

Apple II or nothing since those games are only worth playing if you want to see how the RPG genre developed.

I like to do the PC 88 versions
Basically I'd say whichever is most convenient though. SFC allows for really easy rerolls for bonus stats.

Depends on what you want.
I'd recommend just to try various versions out. Take the premade characters for a spin to get a feel of the differences and then make your own on the system of your choice.

What does PC88 have over PC98?

I just like the font and slightly lower graphic fidelity more to be quite honest. It cultivates the feel real well without going TOO far like the original version does.

You can play the PC98 version in 640x200, just lower the clock rate.

For Wizardry 1 some people like the NES version for the music. I played the SNES version and thought it was pretty okay.

If you want to play the console versions for easier rolls and stuff, I suggest just playing whatever version you want to (by trying them out or watching some videos). I'm pretty sure that importing is not really important on the console versions (at least is not on the SNES version) like it is on the originals (since you HAVE to do it).

For 4 I recommend the PS1 remake. You can play it 99% on english by turning some options on the menu as well (except for the arrange mode). The 5 remake is also included on the same disk.

For the rest just play the originals. They hold up pretty well IMO.

There's no point in playing Wizardry anymore now that Grimoire is out.

It wasn't as easy as I remembered but there's some condition that prevents it from accessing the kanji ROM and higher resolution.
Of the 8 bit versions I liked the X1 better simply because the sound for walking and bashing against walls is nicer.

Wiz 1-5: PSX.
Wiz 6: SNES with a fantranslation, unless you really want the character export feature.
Wiz 7: PC. The PSX version looks like shit and isn't translated anyway.

Don't you get to keep your money to buy equipment? Knight of Diamonds is supposed to be played with characters from Proving Grounds or alternatively from Legacy of Llylgamyn or Heart of the Maelstrom.

I'd probably say the same except for 6 on the PC, even though the snes one it better, so I can import into 7 legit.

All the console versions of 1 2 3 are specially made stand alone games. I think even on the archives cd 2 and 3 were specially hacked so you could create new characters and they would automatically pass 20 levels or something.

>PC98 or IBM?
I'm honestly not sure. I am happy with my Steam version which puts my vote down for Ibm.

Wizardry 4 isn't on Steam.

>>4170345
Unlike the rest they don't have a full English option so you're stuck with Japanese.
1-3 use the alternate stat system where your maximum is determined by race instead of being fixed to 18.
4 is easier than the computer versions with more control over your monsters and less randomness.

Ah yes. you are right. I play 6 on Steam. As for 4, that was on the Wizardry Archives CD. So ibm, Ms dos. I also have it laying around from old abanonware sites.

>> No.4171317

>>4171270
Is that a reason to recommend it?
The IBM versions of 1-5 are just ports of the Japanese ones with lower resolution, CGA colors and removed language options.
They're not even real DOS games rather than booters with a wrapper.

Wizardry 8, best Wizardry.

>> No.4172852

Wait, what's wrong with (what I assume to be) the originals? I was lazy and grabbed 1-7 off an abandonware site.

>> No.4173159

>>4172852
You can play Wizardry 1 and 2 on the Apple II but you miss out on the streamlined interface. Plus it's fucking Apple II so you either play it in black & white or with green and purple everywhere.
What you get on Abandonware sites is probably not the Apple II version but the crappy IBM ports.
