I lost progress in Legacy of the Wizard pretty regularly due to password errors. That's one of the reasons why I never actually cleared the game until I revisited it through emulation years later.

I had some fun with the password system in Swords and Serpents because it was relatively easy to come up with a password that the game would accept. Then I could play through it with a party that had thoroughly random equipment, levels, etc.

I don't think any of the things I disliked in retro games have disappeared or become unpopular with developers. Your brother entering the "no damage to player 1" code while you're in the kitchen getting the drink he asked you for has merely been replaced with pay-to-win multiplayer games. CPU enemies still read your inputs and do things human players can't. In the old days, a few games had game-breaking glitches, but now they're even more prevalent because with the advent of internet connectivity and downloadable patches, there's no incentive to playtest the game before it's released.

Outside of some indie roguelikes I can't think of any. Rayman Legends/Origins did it great, the games were very difficult but it gave you infinite lives to keep retrying it. It just cuts down on the tedium of having to re-do the easy parts you can do blindfolded just to get back to the one hard part you're struggling with.

I find it hard to get into those kind of games. It's true that having to redo stuff can be frustrating, but you don't get much of an adrenaline rush when there's nothing to lose.

Studios making it so you have to buy the strategy guide by hiding time sensitive objects in obscure places without any hints or mention. Example:

To get the awesome cool sword, you need to talk to this villager npc in the second village twice before the end of the chapter, then you go to the bottom level of this cave and hit the wall 5 times, and it opens a secret room with three chests. It's the one on the left, if you pick wrong you'll never get this item in this play through.

You're shitting me, right? The game only gives you two mages, two thieves, and literally everyone else is a fighter. Even the fucking dog is a fighter. I played as a Mage because I am basically your complete opposite I guess and then then was basically a spellsword by the end of it anyway. I only used one other mage most of the time, and that was for extra heals. The only boss that gave me any trouble at all was the final boss in the dwarf experiment DLC. I didn't have any trouble at all in Leliana's Song either, and you only get a token mage in that one.

I'm sure everyone on here will give you shit for not figuring out the wall jump, but I had a really tough time getting the timing down as a kid. I figured out from watching the 3 creatures that you were supposed to wall jump, but compared to Batman or Shinobi the wall jump is kind of difficult to pull off. I actually abandoned my first save file after I saved at the bottom of the area you have to wall jump out of, and started the game over again taking care to pass over that energy tank.

It's not bad once you get the timing down but all these autists who have been playing the game for over 20 years forget how difficult the wall jump in SM is compared to its contemporaries

Jurassic Park on SNES. It took about 6 hours. For your average modern NEET maybe that's just a normal play session, but for most people that's asking a lot to have to dedicate 6 straight hours to playing one game, and even moreso for a kid who is more likely to get called away by his parents to go someplace, or told to get off "the Nintendo" because his parents wanted to watch the news.

I always hated when games would have a huge variety of upgrades you could get that were pointless because the game was either too easy, or you cant get it until after beating the game. One that immediately comes to mind is Oot, where they give you ice arrows at the very end of the game and theres literally no point in getting them other than for 100% completion. Same goes for the infinite rupees when you get all 100 skulltulas. You basically beat the game already and theres nothing you could possibly need to buy. Final Fantasy Tactics/FFT Advance also does this, they have a super complex and diverse job system with hard to unlock characters/jobs but theres no real reason to get any of it since the games not hard to begin with.

>>4190357
it depends on what's actually changed in the difficulty. If the difference is just less lives then yeah, i should get something in return since i could just do that on the other difficulty. If the difference is harder/more enemies i'd argue that, in itself, is the something special.

So like 3 hours? It's an NES game, what do you want as a reward anyway? The only people who use the code are the ones who don't care enough about the game to play it anyway. They were made worse because story was told BADLY, because story was added onto a game that wasn't designed to tell a story.

There are other ways to tell a story than a text dump or a cutscene, you can tell a story through gameplay.

Imagine: >>4175902
Blackthorne has a story about two warring tribes, one of shadow and light; tribes are born after sons of a great shaman find two powerful stones in the desert - Lighstone and Darkstone, and some people choose to follow one, some follow the other - and eventually people of the Darkstone (Kadrasuul) become corrupted and basically orcs, run out of their natural resources and wage war on people of Lightstone (Androthi) and win. In the game, you have to defeat leader of Kadrassul, Sarlac, as the final boss.
Other part of the manual is about protagonist, Kyle Blackthorne, being convinced by a court martial of being a mercenary, and grabbing a gun, escaping, when he is zapped to another world where game proper starts. That's this "novel" in the manual.

Now, imagine.
What if a section that involves the two twins of a shaman venturing into the desert where each finds a different stone - was playable, where you could play as one of the brothers finding these stones?
What is the later sections about Sarlac's rise to power because of poverty of Kadrasuul was told through gameplay - perhaps with a mission where player, as Sarlac, kills some political opponents of his? What if the part where the bad guys invade the kingdom of the good guys was playable and you could actually lead a desperate last line of defense against the Darkstone people? (And eventually die, of course.)
What if the escape of Kyle Blackthorne from court martial and finding a gun and fighting his way out and running away was a playable section?

That sounds much cooler than having all the story in cutscenes or in the manual, if you ask me.
