So I just finished Dark Souls and I know it's probably trite at this point, but I'm looking for retro games that have a world that starts to feel like home.
It doesn't have to be like Super Metroid or Dark Souls, it could be a hub world that's filled with secrets or your favorite setting in an RPG. Lesser-known titles are appreciated.

Shadow Moses and Zanzibar Land were great too.

So you want a metroidvania? Super metroid is a pretty good intro to the genre and zm is great too. Some other games ot retro are:AoS,OoE,Momodora (which is kind of a souls like) or you could pick some game from pic related.

Judging by the speed of your posts you are new to /vr/ right? This is a slow board, so take it slowly.

There's a reason Maze of Gallious is ranked so low: it doesn't belong on there at all. All of its levels are connected to a central hub world which makes it about as much of a metroidvania as Mario 64.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be a metroidvania (I hate that term), like I said it could be a hub world like Paper Mario's that just gets you attached to the setting.
And I know it's slow here, I'm not dumping images to bump my own thread.

Fallout 1 & 2 and Daggerfall come to mind. Both had some rather interesting and peaceful towns to take up residence in. It was rewarding to put in a days worth of work in the wild and coming back home to your favorite townsfolk, then sorting your spoils before bed.

Shenmue and Shenmue II. So many beautiful locations and likeable locals. Shenmue II especially since it's at least twice the scale. I'd develop things like favorite streets to take while going home, favorite bars or gaming locations. It really pulls you into the world.

Don't you just love amassing the biggest hoard of gems, artifacts and gold you can at the place where you come to take stock of your situation?
Of course in UU2 it's sort of coded into the game because there's literally a portal between words in the sewers underneath the castle.
Also, in UU2 there's basically an unlimited supply of gems and gold as you can just keep fighting arena battles.
I love to grind the shit out of that arena. In fact I tend to pile up so many dead bodies and stuff that it breaks even the GOG version. So I throw all of it into the water of the arena of water.
Then there end up being too many blood puddles, which can't be picked up. So I charge up wands/use spells of lightning or flame to incinerate them instead. Turns them into piles of ash which can be carried. I kinda like the idea of the Avatar cleaning the place where he brutally murders people using a wand of sheet lightning for a broom.
I really play these games too much.

Personally I like the globetrotting in 2 and was let down in 1 when the Flutter immediately crashes and you're stuck on one island for the whole game, Kattlelox Island is as a result much more fleshed out and interconnected.
