fun fact, English used to have their own letters, like thorn: Þ þ and eth: Ð ð, which you can find in current day Nothern European languages, but apparently between the Norman conquest and the invention of the printing press they died.
As for that vowel autism, I think every foreign language, Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse and Medieval French is to blame as one never completely eliminated the other, so they now pronounce some words as Saxons and others as Frenchies. If current French already has idiotic vowels I cannot imagine it a thousand years ago.
