There was one arcade we had in town in the early 90s called The Dome that I remember had older teens doing and dealing speed and generally intimidating younger kids to let them take over their game. Not a fun place, it got shut down pretty quickly.

I used to; back in the early to mid 2000's I used to holiday in Portugal every year with my parents, and without fail every pub would have a Neogeo cab with a bunch of games on it. By the time we stopped going they were starting to thin out, though.

Recently a cafe opened nearby me that's run by a dude that collects old arcade stuff, though. It has 6 cabs and he rotates the boards pretty frequently. It was really cool getting to play Metal Slug X on actual hardware for the first time in like a decade. I went to Tokyo last year too, the arcade joints there are fucking awesome.

I do, they are opening a barcade in my city later this year though. Owned by someone who already owns a barcade in Phoenix that I've been to once that has good selection of games. It is loud and packed with normies though, not very comfy but I'll still go.

My entire town only had 1 arcade, some hole in the wall in the mall. It was one "big" (not really big but enough for maybe 50 machines) room with absolutely no lights at all, just whatever light came from the screens. So for a relatively little kid it was kind of a scary place because all the older kids dominated the machines and would talk shit to you if you asked to play. And there was no management at all, maybe just one guy in a backroom that would come out in an emergency but yeah. I did all my arcade playing at the pizza place but their selection was severely limited. About the only thing I can remember now is playing some Golden Axe and Shinobi. Those were cool but yeah overall my arcade experience was pretty negative.

Yes. With arcades, video games were a social thing that allowed you to meet new people (and even make new friends), learn good tricks from better players, and most of all, play the most exciting games for a minuscule sum.

Now video games are an autistic hobby you play all alone at home... and you've got to spent hundreds to get the console, the gaming monitor, the games, the fast and reliable Internet connection, the subscription, the accessories (muh arcade stick, muh racing wheel), etc. It's sad.

Still sustainable (you were not stuck with a $60 game you're not touching after two weeks), and for this price you had the latest games, the social experience, etc.

Pinballz in Austin is pretty cool. And the machines have a price tag so you can buy them as well. It pretty much has any pinball and arcade game you can think of.

My friend also would buy broken arcades, fix whatever small part was broken, and for a couple hundred bucks had a working arcade. His whole garage was nicknamed Neverland Racnh II since the neighborhood kids would flock there (with their parents) and play free games. Everyone would pitch in some money to help him with electricity. That coupled with a full size ping pong table and pool table made it like the funnest place ever. Good times.

Then his roommate fucked it all up being a junky that flaked out one day and they couldn't make rent. Had to sell all these glorious machines. I tried for him to just give me the Police Trainer shooting game but it was sold.

As far as I remember, the basic cheeseburger is around $2 here (I almost never go at McDonald's though). Such is life in Yurop.

The high prices had an interesting effect for arcade games though: 2-player gaming was rare because it was way too short if you lost, and the best value for money was to play against the computer. At least your $1 could last ten minutes and not 35 seconds. Then you could share the credit with your friends: one plays the first round, one plays the second round, etc.

A little bit. I miss the games more than I do the arcade experience. I only liked arcades when they were empty because I hate having to wait over someone's shoulder or close enough until they're done playing.

All these leaps in just two or three years...? Nothing could come close today.

Also, there was the "candy shop" aspect because you had so many awe-inspiring games at the same time. All were making your console look like a child's toy, and all were begging to be played... You had to be in a perpetual MIND = BLOWN state whenever you went to an arcade, and this sense of excitement doesn't really exist nowadays.
