4131021 No.4131021 [Reply] [Original]

Give it to me straight: Should I play SC IV or Chronicles for the best version of Castlevania 1 / Simon's story?

>> No.4131031

Play both you nincompoop, they're both great.

But if you're in it for the lore then IV has more because half the game is Simon's journey to the castle. Chronicles is a lot more like the original in that you start at the castle already.

You should play both

Simon Belmont games are Super Mario Bros tier storytelling.

which is probably why they're the only games in the series I like

>> No.4131058

Play both and decide for yourself. You'll only waste a couple of hours on each by having FUN so either way you end up winning.

They're all great. X68000 (Chronicles) is my personal favorite but I'd say play them all.

Chronicles, It's Classicvania balls to the walls hard
SCIV is pretty weak until you hit the ballroom/library level where the entire game has been stupidly easy and then skyrockets in difficulty for no reason

Play both you incomparable homo, it's not like Simon has a story.

Oh yes good old CV storyline.

>> No.4132031 [DELETED]

You guys are being autistic. OP isn't necessarily playing the games for story, he's just talking about events that took place under Simon's first encounter with Dracula, which does count as a story, if a simple one. The same Simon vs. Dracula "story" has been remade at least 5 times, not counting ports.

Those are just different games the devs didn't bother to make up a new plot for. No reason not to play them all.

Play arranged if you want to actually finish the game. Original X68000 is literally the most difficult Castlevania.

Yeah, but OP wants to know which is the best of them.

Just play Action 52. It's genuinely really underrated. People complain about the controls but they're pretty much the same as Castlevania. Tell me, would you rather play one decent Castlevania game or 52 great games from Action 52?

I figured this is the proper thread to talk about this.
I just beat CotM a couple of hours ago and jesus, the map isn't even that big and I had to do tons of fucking backtracking. It wasn't even fun unlike Metroid or other Castlevania games.
From the 8 fucking hours I clocked until the end, at least 3 or 4 were spent backtracking and trying to find my way to the next boss battle because the map is also convulted as fuck.
Did anyone else feel this way playing this game?
Also I looked up some percentages of card drops and that shit is ridiculous, this game was made with the intent of keeping you playing it over and over again to try to figure out everything by yourself. I mean, 0.8% card drop chance from a special enemy that ONLY spawns after you have defeated a specific boss that is also ONLY found in a room that you have visited before and you have no reason to go back to, fucking ridiculous.

I don't remember ever feeling this way and I've finished it more than once.

Chronicles is better, but I'd say just play Castlevania 1 on the NES. IV is without question the most overrated classic Castlevania.

Slow pacing. 8 way whip that destroys the series's tactical nature. You can beat very nearly every boss in a straight damage race. SCV IV might be better than most games but it's one of the weaker Castlevanias.

I just didn't like CotM at all. I don't remember a lot of backtracking but all those games are too tedious for that reason for me so yeah sure, I bet it was guilty of it too. I played it like 2005 so I don't remember much else except the hell that was the two dragon boss.
