Generally the more vanilla-esque and popular ports are, yes. If you want to bypass the palette you can usually load external textures depending on sourceport, but there's no guarantee they'll play nicely due to the colormap- usually people only use external textures to add transparency in ports that require it, or for skybox textures which are always displayed as fullbright anyway. It's possible to compress most images down into Quake's color palette, but it won't always look the greatest and often requires hand-tweaking due to the limited color choice (NEVER USE DITHERING IT LOOKS LIKE SHITE BECAUSE THE TEXTURES ARE DISPLAYED SO LARGE IN-GAME).

Or you can use Darkplaces if you're a weenie, but we'll call you silly names for doing so.

Colored lighting is separate from texture limitations.

I think it really can be boiled down to that the game outstays it's welcome after the third episode, sort of.

At least in a lot of people's opinions, anyway.
Personally I think that episode 5 (and particularly 6) is just a really drawn out and brown slog, but 1, 2 and 3 are pretty solid and are just about long enough to feel good if you take just a couple of levels a day. I really think classic Wolfenstein 3D is best enjoyed in bite-sized portions, as some would burn out on it otherwise.

I think some people who come into it these days also don't expect the game to be quite as simple as it actually is when you compare it to later shooters, the gameplay and exploration is actually not all that varied, enemy types are pretty limited and they're all pretty much Dude With Gun, with the variations being, Dude With Gun Who's A Little Tougher And Shoots Faster, Etcetera, and Gray Dude With Gun Who Takes A Beating And Sneaks Up On You. Your weapons are also not that varied, it's Gun Shoots Bullet, Faster Gun Shoots Bullet, and Fastest Gun Shoots Bullet Very Fast. Some of the ports got a bit more interesting with this, giving you a Rocket Launcher and Flamethrower, which have radically different behavior to give very good justification for their existence.

Level architecture is also what it is, there's no verticality or abstract walls, everything is squares and boxes, and there's only so much tactics and maneuvering you can do with it.
It doesn't make the game BAD by any means, but if you only played Doom before it, a lot of it might seem a bit bland, the game doesn't feel nearly as much as an adventure.

Been getting into making MIDI music pretty hard lately, so I made a MIDI of the for the Sega Genesis game. Vapor Trail. This probably belongs in the music board, but I doubt anyone there would give a shit about a MIDI more than the Doom fanbase would, and I made the cover art Doom-relevant for laughs.

raise to NHEF may misbehave in vanilla if the moving sector has more than 20 (or is it 25?) surrounding linedefs, however this is only relevant if you are testing in chocolate doom or pr+ complevel 2/3, as boom and later removed the limit (it was a surprisingly poorly coded algorithm that used a fixed size array)

that said it may likely be something far more simple, namely that you've made the sector self-adjacent by having those central lines whose sides have the same sector on front and back.

yeah, not calling it horrible by any measure, but 90% of undertale is actually unoriginal content. half the enemies are loosely based on characters from a nes game called monster party, Toriel and asriels designs are basically king and toroko from cave story, sans is a reskin of a character from an earthbound hack Toby Fox made, and most of the tracks are remixes of like, 5 original songs/5 remixed tracks Toby's done for said aforementioned hack.

I know people will shit on me regardless but I think they give it a ton more credit than it really deserves. the dreemurr family tragedy is pretty much the only portion of the story that is remotely interesting. the rest is annoying background quips from mediocre characters, occasional references to the monster/human battles over the years (which is actually cool) and ... whatever the rest of the game is about. I really mean it, I can't bring myself to remembering anything other than sans being edgy and the final battle with him being a bullshit difficult spike.

I always thought it would be more sensible to try to get the level layout fit some section of what the Hangar building looks like in the original game. It's got one landing pad on the west side with a large hangar door and two pads on the south side, possibly implying that there are two additional pads concealed behind the building on the north side. The east end has the traffic control tower. Strictly modeling the outside structure based on the ingame level ends up resulting in a building that hardly looks like something that could be used as "a hangar".

So I am trying to get back in to Hideous Destructor after not playing it for a couple years. It seems like the only way to download it is off their github repo as a zip file. It says on their github page that you should just be able to run the ZIP folder like you would any other mod but it didnt work for me, nor did renaming the extension to pk7. Yes actually this could work just fine as Survival style maps. And I think quite a few UT(1) maps would be great for doom adaptation.

Not just the DM and Assault maps but also some of the CTF maps too (like lavagiant). Though for the actual objective style ones they should be modified to present an uphill battle of some kind (fortifications that weren't originally there, making a balanced map very one sided).

For survival

You need to 3 stage the critters using monster teleports. Eventually some fatsos will teleport in, after they're dead it lowers an obstacle that allows the 2nd wave to come in (and or switches to enable it)... then there's some Arachnotrons that come in at the end of that wave... kill those and it brings in the final wave (which would have either barons or cybers at the end of it).

Also you can place the monster teleports in such a way that the monsters will only gradually funnel in by having semi horizontal corridors that the monsters will eventually trickle (into the corridor that leads to the monster teleport spot). That way you get a fresh wave but then monsters slowly also keep coming in maybe only a few every 30 sec. Also make sure you use the wave-end boss monsters at the end of the line.

Hey guys, I'd like to ask something related to modding for Zandro.

Is it possible to have a monster render through walls and other objects, kinda like wallhax, or the player outlines in L4D? I need it for a monster, but I have no idea where to start, or if it can even be done with Decorate and ACS.

At first, I thought of a HUD message on the screen with some 3D->2D position conversion, but I immediately dropped that idea because my actor would have multiple states/sprites/angles, so this approach would be a pain in the ass.

If it's not possible to make such an effect, what would be the best way of making a solution? If it's not possible to do such, I could always draw a static image on the HUD to show where the entity is, so i'd still be okay.

I was making a map for quake(with quoth mod) but When I test the map it immediately crashes the game, I thought for a while that its because of quoth and changed trenchbroom settings and playerstart entity to id1 but it still crashes, what is wrong with this map? Wow, that's interesting. Straight crash to desktop without even an error other than Windows saying the program has stopped responding.

Judging by the message the compiler spits out at the very end, your map file's gotten corrupted somehow but not enough to stop you from working on it- aside from the obvious **ERROR** message, it's also finding a leak someplace despite the map being sealed just fine. I'd say just copy the map geometry (and info_player_start, if you want), make a new map, and paste them in at the original location with texture lock enabled, then ditch the old map file entirely. I tried that (and moved the skybox upwards a couple units, as I'm not sure if you meant for it to clip into the pillars, as well as adding basic sky lighting) and it compiled and ran just fine.

Quake is hardcoded to load whatever map is named "start" when you hit Singleplayer > New Game. As far as 8th gen goes, right now the 3DS and Vita Homebrew ports we have are pretty shit. The former isn't exactly feature complete, and the latter is simply port of a PSP iteration that had to use MP3s for music instead of MIDIs. Proof of concept or not, they're definitely things that could be made better.

Speaking of ports, ctrQuake is somehow pretty decent, but it's still like a more 'direct' approach and so remapping is only any good if you edit the config externally. Not sure if it supports music yet.

Yeah, the crap I had to do just to make the ammo bar change colour depending on the amount of ammo you have. I don't know if SBARINFO has changed at all since then, but it's a bunch of messy nested duplicate code and it sucks.

Okay Guys so ive got this real nasty problem thats been coming up recently since 3.1 came out.

Unlike 2.4 GZ after I start/load a game I start getting some serious slowdown even on maps and mods that didnt give me any problems before. Like Plutonia 2 of all things.

After a short while it just grinds to a crawl and then GZ crashes with some write error (id get a snapshot of it but it grinds my system so slow I can barely even close it).

Any tips? is this some kind of bug?

This is where the game will try to hang for a few seconds but rather than getting a frozen screen, the game keeps going but it remembers whatever turning or movement I had before and just keeps doing that (I could be spinning uncontrollably, or keep going and run off a ledge, etc).

Funny story, that huge pushwall maze was supposed to be part of a contest, at one of the ends of the maze you can find a floating sign exclaiming "CALL APOGEE: SAY AARDWOLF"

The idea being you were supposed to call them and give them the secret word, then you'd win, or be elligble to win, a lifetime's supply of free games from Apogee.
They ended up scrapping the contest at the last minute though because tools to cheat and to take the game apart and look at it's individual files popped up pretty fast, so they felt there wouldn't be any fair outcomes possible.

In some of the ports the sign graphic is replaced with a pile of generic bones, but most of the ports which has the level still keeps the pushwall maze intact. It's generally not possible to get 100% secrets on E2M8 without some sort of cheat utility, as you'll block yourself off at branching paths. There's something like 100+ pushwalls in there.

It's an odd little artifact of it's time.

Any Marathon fags around? Is there a way to get custom music playing in Marathon 2? I know in M1 you can just replace the music folder to do that, but since M2 only has one music track (the title theme) I wasn't sure if putting a music folder in the directory would work. You're right. My server is currently on map02 on Doom2 even thought I changed the map with the "map" command. I didn't know about the difference between MAP and CHANGEMAP.
