Answer this riddle, troopers. So you're having a movie discussion with your fellow /vr/-era gamers when vidya movies are brought up. Street Fighter (DEC 94) and Mortal Kombat (AUG 95). Both released with a decent ammout of source material existing, enough for stories and all, anyway. But here's the kicker:

When people talk about Street Fighter:
>Oh fuck what a shit piece horrible goat ass that filth of a movie was. They got nothing right, the story was horrible, the acting was bad ('cept RJ), and it was just all-around bad.

When people talk about Mortal Kombat:
>Aw man I LOVE MK. I mean yeah it wasn't great but come ON I enjoyed that movie. Second one was utter shit, but I like the first. Good enough movie.

Not exact quotes, and not polar opposites, but you get the idea. Seems like people tolerate-to-enjoy MK while they hate and burn SF (movies). I've never understood this in my later years. BOTH movies screwed up content with respect to original content, both screwed up canon story and references, both had shoddy acting, both had uninspiring original stories, both had lackluster action, and both sucked as MOVIES. Yeah MK had some good music and the fight scenes were longer, but both movies REEKED of campy.

So. Why do you think that, between THESE TWO movies (inB4 other VG movies are brought in; see subject), people usually pick Mortal Kombat over Street Fighter and, more so, bash the hell out of SF while trying to somewhat tout Mortal Kombat?

>> No.412401

I'll be honest with you OP I thought both the Street Fighter films and the MK films were shit.

I doubt that. When these movies came out I was still a kid and all I cared about was seeing those characters on screen. I didn't care that the stories did or didn't follow the games, I cared that the stories they made were garbage. Mainly street fighter.

Mortal Kombat was a 1:1 adaptation.

The game is just about ridiculous characters hitting each other. And so is the movie. Therefore, if you liked the game, you'd probably appreciate the movie.

Street Fighter however, is a real bottom-barrel early 90's action movie. It tries to have a plot, where it really didn't need one. I still love it though, because I love terrible movies. In that sense, the film excels, especially because Raul Julia was legitimately golden, and you can't help but get feels when you think it was his last EVER performance, and he did it for his kids.

Street Fighter's characters are more animated and cartoonish, so trying to translate that to Live Action just doesn't work. And the movie itself felt like it was embarrased about what it was coming from but still trying to stay somewhat "true" to it, so you'll see all the characters go through these crazy jumps and loops just to get the characters to use their moves and get into their outfits their wearing from the games
Street Fighter makes more sense as an animated movie.

Mortal Kombat's transition to film was better because it wasn't embarassed about what it came from, and just presented us a world where magic kung fu existed, instead of doing this weird "hurr magic is dumb, now time to run around in brightly colored spandex"

The second movie falls into this trap that I think is really easy to fall into.

Everyone always seems to think the only way to continue the story in movie form would be to combine Mk 2 and MK 3 together, because otherwise why would they be fighting Shao Kahn again in 3?
The problem with that though is the stories and settings from 2 to 3 are really different, and you start to get overloaded on characters to the point where you'll just have a bunch of throwaway background characters who were supposed to be important but just turned into cameos.

>> No.414303 [DELETED]

I always felt the Van Damme Street Fighter was a bit off but not as bad as some people make it out to be. I think the problem with the movie was that it suffered from the too many cooks in the kitchen syndrome that comes with big budget movies like that and so the creators felt they had to pander to a larger audience/multiple demographics in order to at least break even on their investment. so the final product wound up consisting of a mish mash of conflicting ideas as opposed to a unity from a singular source

the reason people prefer the MK movie over Street Fighter is because Mortal Kombat gave the fans what they wanted: FIGHTING

in Mortal Kombat the makers understood what the core appeal of the game was and tailored the movie more around fan fav characters duking it out. The Street Fighter movie had some too, but to a lesser extent. the fights were more kind of incidental and fleeting, only occurring to move the plot along which was centered on this hero needs to stop a terrorist organization story. The Street Fighter movie was basically Die Hard with a Street Fighter package whereas the Mortal Kombat movie felt more like a plot taken from the Mortal Kombat games

>> No.414389

Double Dragon, to me, is a huge missed opportunity. All they really had to do was a Mad Max/The Warriors mash-up. Instead, there was too much slapstick and terrible dialogue. "My life just flashed before my eyes! Dude... I sleep a lot!". Not to mention Andy Dick being in the movie. Sheesh.

What's even weirder is that it was written by Bruce Timm (of Batman TAS fame).

Casting was huge. SF fucked up because it thought big names would make for a good movie. Making Guile a foreigner and Raul Julia, a svelt man Bison just completed the fuck up. Nothing against Raul, but he was only so imposing in that getup.
The casting for MK was great. While the movie had cheese, it certainly treated the source material like a story, and not a videogame that must be made a movie, shoehorning anything and everything in.
The main and secondary cast really carried the movie; even the choice for a preliminary fight, that black guy with the dreads that was the Machine or something on WMAC Masters..it just felt like a martial arts movie as well, especially for a kid/tween/teenager. >perfect Guile

If you seriously cannot think of one other person who would be spot-on for a Guile role, well man... you need some cinema inspiration or something.

Mortal Kombat had great fight scenes and pretty kick-ass music.

Street Fighter has none of that.

>> No.418718

no one expects mortal kombat to be good. The game's have never been more than mediocre. People carry these expectations over to the movie.

Street fighter is expected to be damn near perfect. Because the game is held to such high standards, each new game in the series will be judged harshley. Players carry this strict demand for quality with them to the movies

>> No.418727

Mortal Kombat was basically what I expected; not good, but entertaining and not completely awful. I haven't seen Street Fighter, though. Is that the one with "for me, it was Tuesday"?

Yes it is. And for the love of all, anon, don't waste the time watching it. Not even for the "let me see just how bad it is". Seriously. Enough of us have taken this bullet for you. Honor us by not watching it. Please.

I guess the two or three versions that came out on consoles confuses many.

There were FIVE versions of SF2 for the arcade.

Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior (original)
Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition
Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers (first appearance of Fei Long and the other new fighters)
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
