What do you suppose makes Metal Slug so great? The first three anyway.

I like how much more outrageous the games could get after the first one by including sci-fi and supernatural elements. I love how goofy the games can be yet still retain an exciting feeling of play.

A really good mix of "realistic" illusionistic characters, vehicles, backgrounds and animations while still being very clear to oversee what is going on. This makes everything feel so natural and smooth on top of the controls.
Good sense of humor.
Fun to play co-op.
Noob-friendly to get into for the most part without being too easy.

I really hate how they took the flashing out, 'cuz those really won't cause a seizure at all. They flash orange or green or blue rather than full-on red and they don't flash very quickly either. The last stage and the bosses of 2/X were utter shit, they had poor design that relied on impassable enemy placements so it can eat credits.

Sega Saturn port has more slowdown than MS2 on the AES. The entire game plays at half speed, except for the 2-3 parts where you are alone on the screen.

Like, you can't just have a game STAY HARD at all times. The difficulty should vary, even at the final mission. The placement of the shmup's JUST after a couple of tricky bosses so the shmup's giving you a chance to catch your breath, especially seeing how much farther you've gotta go.

Around '99 or 00 there was this litttle "arcade" that happened to open near my route home from school -it was basically a home garage with a few cabs on comission/lease- the old lady that ran it saw me 1CC MS1 (slightly older game so credits were .5 MXN, for comparision USD was like 9 or 10 Pesos at the time), she got it changed to another cart by the next day, haha.

Eh? Demon Front is a nice game but it's really too different to compare it directly. They way you need to scan for hidden keys to get to the real last boss kind of reminds me of Avenging Spirit. Favourite feature was that hilariously broken attack that triggered if both players overlapped and attacked with their mascots at the same time.

>>4130842
It wouldn't make much difference since getting killed might make you lose momentum since certain weapons and having more than the starting 10 bombs make some parts easy... and high scores required not to die and conserving the vehicles. Exchanging extra lives for score at the end like some shmups might be broken since you can set it to have 99 lives per credit in the settings.
Rather than the scoring gimmicks from the rest of the series (combos, medals...) I'd liked it if they gave bonus points for unused extra bombs or had more risky (yet optional) platforming stunts like that train jump from X or the lamps from the mummy level.

Fio without her glasses is weird.

>calling a game well received by almost everyone an irredeemable turd
>parroting framerate memes as the main problem
>comparing it to a game inspired by it that barely left Taiwan.
Not hard to misconstrue your opinion as mere shitposting.

Don't respond to him. He's a notorious ban evader who keeps hammering the Doom threads with his retardation and has been for years.

How do you make these games not run like garbage when there's more than 4 enemies on screen? It's fun, but the FPS drops just kill it.

Slowmo is a feature, anon.

>> No.4133841

Metal Slug 2 got a patch 2 years ago to remove that slowdown bug that caused it to run like molasses, but it still has more slowdown than X due to it using the MS1 engine. Still a good fix to have if you can burn a EPROM to replace the p1 rom on a real cartridge or if you want to use it on the Neo Geo flashcart. For emulators just overclock the original version.

One aspect I've always believed these games really nailed was "game feel". The better games in the series had a wonderful sense of flow and I always found it very satisfying to inflict damage on the enemies in these games due to the detailed 2D animations. Like some others have mentioned, today's prevalent and lazy cut out style of animation in 2D games will never match the glory of meticulous, frame by frame pixel animation.

Is this a good port? I was thinking about getting it since it has some bonus content that the 360 version doesn't have.

Some people seem to prefer the credits system in this version. You only got 2 lives but you can restart the stage as many times as you want.

It has some neat extras like Storming the Mothership where you get to play as one of Morden's soldiers.

Apparently the Xbox version runs in 480i which is pretty dreadful for a 2D game like this, although there exists a fix if you're running it on a burned DVD. I'm not really sure about the resolution either, NG games had a weird 320x224 resolution(often with only 308x224 being used) which causes problems with some ports stretching it.

Bullet time before Max Payne made it cool.
Seriously though, the only part that's a huge pain in the ass with the slowdown was the brigde right before Allen in MS2. It felt like the slowdown actually managed to lag or lose inputs,

There's a multiplatfom gun'n'run coming up called "Cuphead" or some such. It actually looks pretty nice. It's hand drawn 2D inspired by those whack ass cartoons from the 20s.

Not to sound like an ass but everyone knows about Cuphead at this point, the thing has been in development hell for nearly a decade.
