Weird wacky fighting games?

Games with characters that you wouldn't expect or games with a system that make it different from games like Mortal Kombat?

Image totally related. Games that I personally grew up with. Even though I never care for fighting games the flashy skills kept me hooked. Love using the Jesus guy on World Heroes.

I know everyone knows Darkstalkers but I don't think people respect the weird shit that happens in those games.

Morrigan? She's sexy as hell and elegant and stuff but when she's attacked she wigs the FUCK out; her eyes bug out of her head and she reels back like a fishing reel.

Victor is the big, muscular character and his story is really, really serious with a bittersweet resolution afterward. Yet, he fights with his ass and picks his nose. He can beat you with his butt and he also has a super where he grabs you with his buttcheeks and charges you with an incredible amount of electricity. And he finishes with a nose pick!

Anakaris is a mummy who talks like an evangelistic Christian. He can also turn people into tiny version of themselves.

Demitri is a vampire who can turn chicks into dudes and then he chokes the shit out of them, in a process that seems to siphon their life force.

and there's more; the win quotes in Vampire Savior are fucking weird.

Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition had a weird system where the meter under your health would automatically fill and then reset over and over. If you did a special move when it was full, you powered up, and after a few of those you could pull off a super move.

The animation in Darkstalkers is really something. I know the usual view of it is just as another "anime" game because catgirls and such, but when you really take a good look at it the game is filled with animation techniques that are straight out of golden age American cartoons. From the way the characters squash and stretch and bend to emphasize their movements, to the wild takes they do when they take damage, to the outright morphing and shapeshifting. Which is why I'm wary about the possibility of a new one in 3D. So much of what really makes Darkstalkers Darkstalkers came from playing to the strengths of the medium of hand drawn animation. Even the series' producer once said that turning it 3D would lose everything that was good about it.

This is probably a gray area as far as its retroness, but I nominate Tech Romancer for the DC/arcade.

It's a mech fighting game, yeah, but each of the characters is a very distinct homage/parody of a certain mecha genre or tradition, right down to the faster, red-colored version of the "grunt" mecha with a Char horn. The entire game feels like a giant crossover and it's a joy to play.

Loved Clay Fighter when it came out.

Playing it now... everything is fucking overpowered in that game. The AI also rubber bands like no other. The difficulty setting basically just sets at what % of health they go full on rape train on you.

Still fun though.

Oh I had that. I think Ranker, the final boss, was pretty bad ass. The rest of the cast was crap sadly.

Not retro, but would you consider Anarchy Reigns as a "wacky" fighter?

World Heroes is on my top list of favorite poverty games. Too bad everyone equates poverty game with anime airdash game.
Gotta love Mudman, and Johnny Maximum

When i was a kid i loved this game even though its full on nippon speak. Most memorable character is the one that looked like Seth from SF4 and his moving train track stage. Playing it while having a rainy weather outside just made it more awesome.
but my father only borrowed it from a friend of his for only a week or so.
I was saddened that the game was returned back to the owner.
Father then bought me Art of Fighting, and I forgot about Power Athlete.
Man, I gotta finish this game

just tried the compilation of Psychic Force series on PS2
man this game really oozes the late 90's anime art style
game is really hard on max difficulty
seeing as Square Enix owns rights to this game
this game is Dissidia before Dissidia only much much more technical

Liked him too for his straight up going to kick your ass appearance with no character gimmicks (aside from the purple skin.)
