the weird thing in the middle is a pachinko knob you twist to control how far the balls shoot into the game field.

N64 and GC controllers are the height of Nintendo fans defending literally anything. At least with N64 we have the benefit of hindsight, although it doesn't seem like it would take a stroke of genius to put the stick and the pad next to each other.

That was actually a standard design for controllers around the time it was released. Just look at the coleco/intellivision controllers. (Pic not related) The only thing that sucked about the 5200 controller is that atari thought that you needed analogue controls to play space invaders and the controllers break easily,

But that thing seems to be rare and expensive too. It looks like ADB/USB Adapters are really sought-after. But not for the controller. Some really seem to hang onto their old pre-USB Mac keyboards for some reason.

And there seem to be some DIY projects too for cases like that.

I guess Sonic would control like shit with a trackball. Something like that would be more useful for Arcade games that used a trackball like Marble Madness. The original DS is just a SNES controller with handles and analog sticks and every iteration since then is just that with minor changes every generation, don't act like Sony has anything to do with defining controller designs. The Switch Pro controller is obviously takes more inspiration from Microsoft's controllers, which have also been getting better and better with every gen.
