4chan uses a json api and ajax to load posts whenever you click on the little "Update" on the bottom. It was necessary because userscripts did the same but by loading the entire page every 10 seconds.

Things like the captcha also require modern browsers. And the quick reply. And the other features like post hiding, user css, quote backlinks, whatever.

And of course the shit load of user tracking requires modern js too.
