ST > KF2 > KF3 > KF1

But my favourite Fromsoft FPRPG sadly isn't retro.

This exactly but note this is using the Japanese numbering.
>KF1J: Make 1st person dungeon crawler with straight up bad but detection, questionable passing and completely erratic difficulty ramp that probably wouldn't even be worth localizing
>KF1&2: Add some story elements to make the pacing feel better, add some "open world" elements to make the ramp seem less arbitrary
>ST: Take what you've learned and make a really great 1st person action dungeon crawler
Abyss: Add in some story elements again from a fresh perspective and split the games
>Souls: Merge all the best concepts plus some stolen shit to make a juggernaut

Haven't played it but presumably it's the ultimate expression of the KF line equivalent to ST:A

Kind of, it's pretty atmospheric, the music, difficulty and combat are good.

>hey guys let's create a really cool rpg with a really cool atmosphere
>also let's give it the worst controls and combat we can think of
>make three games like this

>five years go by
>hey let's make a 4th game of that series
>should we fix the god-awful controls and combat into something more pleasing?
>haha, no! keep it the same

KF4 actually has worse gameplay than the PSX games, thanks to the painfully slow turnspeed. Lore didn't seem as good as the PSX trilogy either.

I need to get back to 2, my playthrough lost momentum when I was in the mines endlessly getting lost.

But I did play Shadow Tower to completion and really enjoyed it. If I had any advice for people interested on it, I'd say that make sure you keep an eye on how many weapons you've got. I ran out of weapons halfway by accident and had a rough few hours trying to scrape together enough to get by.

Fragile weapons are the worst. I've been getting post traumatic ST flashbacks

>> No.4100747

>>4100729
I like it a lot in BOTW since you're showered with weapons so you rarely worry about running out and you have a multitude of options to approaching combat, so it's really only an issue fighting damage sponges like Lynels, but in Shadow Tower it can get stress inducing since if you run out of weapons you're fucked and you can go from getting lots of weapons to fuck-all for long stretches.

I like Shadow Tower's resource management as a whole though, I just had one rough stretch probably thanks to selling too many of my weapons. Dunno why it bothers people in Zelda besides them not liking the idea of getting a strong sword and not being able to use it forever. You get so much good stuff that it just isn't an issue.

Between the weapon fragility and no XPs they really manage to change the whole way you have to approach the game, choosing your battles. I need to make a note of where to farm claymore but I'm getting off topic.

In ST:A I used some gear that heals you over time then used some thing that lets you repair your weapons using HPs but I guess that's still off topic. I don't remember how I handled it in original ST.

You could trade equipment for HP potions, and HP was treated as currency in blacksmiths to repair your equipment. You would repair your stuff until you were nearly dead, then heal yourself. Getting a ring or whatever it was that let you slowly regen health was a very powerful tool as a result.

It's a pretty good system that lets you get rid of stuff you don't want in exchange for HP and repairing your good stuff, but if you get overconfident and sell too much stuff you might run out of weapons if you start breaking them faster than you can replace them.

I honestly love the games interface and controls and design as a whole

that shit is basically metal af and I love all of it

to be fair if you searched the game really carefully and intuitively you would get a huge surplus of gear and the game was pretty easy though you still died from the basically enormous danger level of certain encounters and the speed with which you could go from totally alive to just dead

Do you guys think that SoM King's Field is better than the original?

>> No.4103259

>>4099437
King's Field 1 (us) > Kings Field 2 (us) >>>>> Shadow Tower 1

King's Field 1 has more vertical/connected level design. King's Field 2 is still a good game but the map is too flat, making secrets less fun to find.
Shadow Tower 1 had some cool ideas but they are handled pretty poorly. Too many enemies that hurt you just from simply getting too close.

>> No.4103279

Anyone that ranks Shadow Tower as worst is probably just bad at games and needs to git gud.

>> No.4103296

If I wanted to give King's Field a shot, what is a reasonable price to pay for like, a loose disc copy. And would you all recommend starting with (US) KF and then going on to II? II tends to be significantly cheaper it seems, but neither is crazy since I don't give a shit about boxes.
