Is this console good?
I am collecting consoles that didn't use disc as main way to play games
Already have atari, nintendo and sega stuff
Never seen the console in my state stores back in the day

Better than SNES and SMS, not as good as Genesis or NES.

Yes it is, and bigger / better library than its North American localized version, the Turbografx-16. Get a Coregrafx with AV out and start hunting for games.

Off the top of my head I recommend:
Ninja Spirit
Valkyrie no Densetsu
Genpei Touma-den
Splatterhouse
R-Type
GunHed / Blazing Lazers
Super Star Soldier
Soldier Blade
New Adventure Island
Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu
Son Son II
Bomberman /93/94
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Gradius
Salamander
Parodius
Air Zonk

Wrong.

SCD didn't suck as long as you stayed away from the FMV shovelware.

No need to bring consolewar to this thread
I just wanted to see what people thought of the system
As a nintendofag I am interested to see what other companies offered at the time

You don't need to hide your tears, my dear Sega baby.

It had more worthwhile games than the Sega CD or 32X, man. Also, the better version of Lords of Thunder as well.

The preferred term is Segaspie, you misogynist islamophobic shitlord.

I don't see Keio Flying Squadron, the magnum opus of hori shooters, on TGCD.

I think it is pretty good, home to many of my favorites.

In the US, it was rebranded as the TurboGrafx-16 and initially it was sold in big market cities before national rollout. Eventually NEC consolidated it all to TTI and released the TurboDuo. I clearly remember seeing the TurboGrafx-16 in Toys 'R US. Like the SNES and Saturn, the games are way cheaper from Japan than US version because like those two systems, it was popular in Japan (I even remember it being more popular than the original Famicom at one point) and there's lots of titles available for the system. Just know that the HuCards (JP) and Turbochips (US) will need a converter to play on the other region's system.

Fuck off, the SNES won.
You need an addon to play Doom, while the SNES got the Super FX chip. Plus, I've seen devices that can play Genesis games on SNES.

>tfw normal pc engines are now going for over half of what a duo usually sells for

I'm going to Japan later this year. Can anyone tell me if it's still worth picking one up there? or is the retro price gouging craze big over there now as well?

>I've seen devices that can play Genesis games on SNES
Those are just software genesis emulators running on a chip in the cartridge. I think you even need to plug a separate video cable into the emulator cartridge.

It's really a shitty gimmick and has nothing to do with the capabilities of the SNES. The console isn't being used for anything other than its controller ports when you are using one of those things.

>> No.4083114

>>4083070
An add-on made more sense than chips. Think about it, why buy the same chip for multiple games when you could just get it once in the form of an add-on?

Then you don't want this. The PCE got CDs long before the SNES even came out, the library is massive, and some of the best stuff is on CD.

I have no idea why people feel the need to consolewar.

Anyways, the PCE/TG-16 is a great system and there's tons of nice games for it. The Bonk games, Ninja Spirit, Devil/Alien Crush, Blazing Lasers -- it's pretty much THE system for old school shmups.

You can play import HuCards on it without a mod. If you buy the JP versions of games, they're pretty cheap.

I'm debating buying a PC Engine soon. What's a good price for a set with the console, controller, ac adapter and av cable? Also should I go for Core Grafx 1 or 2? Not really interested in CD.

Do you know Japanese? If yes, it's a great system. If not, it's still cool.

>>4083074
In the PCE's case, I think it's less price gouging and more that working ones are slowly going extinct. Thanks for using such shitty capacitors, NEC!

Anyway, I live in Japan and I picked up a working Duo for 12k yen a few months ago, which was admittedly a good deal but not that far out of the ordinary. Duo-Rs and -RXes are more expensive because they have a reputation for being more reliable (though at this point I'd recommend a full re-cap job on any Duo, -R or not). I've seen basic HuCard models going for a couple thousand.

Just avoid Yahoo Auctions, it's Japan's eBay.

Also avoid Akihabara. Forgot to mention that. It's a tourist trap these days, and everything there is marked up by 50% or more.

In a very real way it can be credited with inventing and successfully implementing every 4th gen convention. NEC/Hudson and their PC-E kicked off the fourth generation of video game consoles by basically producing a beefed up Famicom/SNES. Then they rode the fourth generation all the way to the end via the well-timed introduction of their CD drive andthe regular release of those "arcade cards" or whatever to expand the system capabilities via the card slot once all the games started coming out on. They just had poor international distribution then completely fucked up with the PC-FX and it was all over in a flash.

Pretty much all the meme games except Dungeon Explorer. Didn't really like it for some reason. >9000 shmups, Castlevania, Ys, Bonks, Valis, Popful Mail
If you can into moon there are a fuckton of good jp exclusive RPGs, strategy games, and visual novels. There's also a ton of random fightan games if you're into that, although that's really not where the PCE excelled.
Some good games I hardly see mentioned are Faussete Amour, Mamono Hunter Yoko, Shapeshift, Doraemon, Pop'n Magic, Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman, Gayvan, Conan, Götzendiener.
