why are snes games so fucking expensive? most people charge atleast $60 for a single game. is it even possible to get cheap SNES games anymore?

Where the hell are you looking? Expensive sure, but your typical superstar SNES title will average somewhere around 30 bucks, not 60. I got my whole SNES system in great condition for 60 bucks. If you're willing to play on SFC instead, the carts are half as expensive from resellers, I don't know why though.

You can play SFC games on a SNES easily. Just requires you to cut a small piece of plastic around the cartridge slot. The modification is not visible from the outside when the console is reassembled.

There's plenty of good games that are under $20 still. Back when the getting was good you could pretty much get any SNES game for $3-$10. Those days are long gone and people are more aware of the rarity of certain games. A lot of SNES games didn't have a lot of printings and some of them were really good. I have most of the good SNES games but unfortunately I'm still missing games like Metal Warriors, Space Megaforce etc etc. Never found them in the wild.

Because it's Nintendo. Anything with a Nintendo logo on it people will pay out the nose for.

This is why I never got into collecting for Nintendo consoles, I just emulate instead.

The thing I like about Genesis is all the games are cheap, only fun ones I can think of that are a bit pricey are gun star heroes and bloodlines.

The reason you never got into collecting is because you're poor/cheap/lazy. Good Genesis games are not cheap anymore btw. Try leaving your house once in awhile instead of stealing your games.

That's why you buy a flashcart.

SNES games, and increasingly, N64 games are getting price hiked because the people who grew up with them have money now and want to buy the shit they had as kids. Resellers suck dick and overvalue shit leading to price hikes across the board. It's not complicated. It's why I'm buying all the n64 shit I can now because it's only getting more and more expensive.

That being said, I do wonder if this is sort of a trend or a phase. I wonder if ten years from now the prices on them won't go down.

All these threads about the prices of retro games are fucking retarded by the way. It's just how it is now. Making the 100000000th thread about it on /vr/ isn't going to change shit. People are going to buy what they want and market is going to stay this way for a while, if not indefinitely.

SNES/SFC have a lockout chip, but since the North American and Japanese consoles were given a different physical formfactor to prevent playing Japanese games on an American SNES out of the box, they were allowed to have the same lockout chip. European consoles have a different chip though, so you need to mod that as well if you want to play Japanese games on a European SNES.

Really? I have the opposite problem. Every time I find something good on craigslist or at a yard sale it's a bare console with no controllers or cables. The cables I can replace myself or work around, controllers for most consoles are pretty cheap (not as much for SNES), but games are basically impossible to get for less than retail-prices now. Flashcarts are expensive too. Frankly I might just give up and just try to acquire all the consoles that can play games on burned CD-Rs without needing any modifications I can't do myself. For that reason I'd love to trade a SNES console for a Sega CD addon.

Sadly they didn't have anymore but plenty of bragging rights for owning CT and actually not even paying $2.52. Me and the girl met that night at Del Taco and I paid for that in return.

Many flea market sellers (of products of all kinds, not just games/technology) also do a lot of sales online. So lots of tables with games at flea markets are selling for exactly ebay prices, as they're the same exact cartridges being simultaneously listed there.
You can still find some SNES games for decent-but-not-quite-cheap prices though. Twenty American for Chrono Trigger sounds like a steal considering how expensive that game has become (and I certainly haven't seen a deal that good in the last couple years+), but $10 or $20 for a moderately popular and decently liked game (something like F-Zero for example) isn't un-findable these days.
