I cannot stand Sega.

I cannot fathom why anyone thinks the Sega Genesis is better than the Super Nintendo. Everything about it is awful. The controller, the sound, the graphics and colors, it all makes me want to burn everything.

I also have 30 sega genesis games (including "must haves" like Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania Bloodlines, Beyond Oasis, Landstalker, and a "holy grail" of Crusader of Centy) and I haven't played any of them for more than 10 minutes.

I have a Core Grafx with a flashcart but haven't played anything on it.

Forgive me padre.

I use Retsupurae to watch play throughs of really old games, especially cinematic ones, that probably aren't worth playing now. Just so I can get a sense of what they were like. So far I've done:

>Dark Seed 1-2
>Alone in the Dark 1,2,3
>Mystery of the Druids
>Galerians
>Clock Tower 2
>Earnest Evans

Very interesting that Alone in the Dark ends up tracking the same path as the Resident Evil series. Starts as a spooky mansion horror game, then goes full action, including zombies with guns.

While I like both Sega and Nintendo, I usually like to shit on Sega just to piss their fans because, well, IMHO, Sega died as a competitor for a reason.
The Dreamcast didn't fail just because "the world wasn't ready", Sega was shit at marketing, software and hardware and the logical conclusion followed.

To this day Sonic STILL falls like an anvil to the water. Sega still can't make a properly "solid" game (as in, not floaty or with an unfinished feel) and it's kinda sad because I fucking loved the Genesis (to bad it depended too much on life support near it's end while the SNES didn't need shit to stay on)

TL;DR
I love Sega but sometimes I realistically shit on it just to piss people off and try to get a decent topic afterwards once they realize I'm kinda kidding with the excessive hate.

I enjoy retro games games more if they're on steam. I can't really explain it, I just love to have those little game hours and stats on my steam profile to show everybody how much of a cool gamer dude I am. I sometimes re-buy retro games from steam sales by Retroism and Nightdive Studios just to have those classic games in my collection. Games that I may already own as DRM free copies.

I really do play the games, and I enjoy the idea of someone seeing my in-game hours in Wizardry, Capitalism plus, X-COM, Duke Nukem 3D etc. and then thinking:
>wow, this dude doesn't care about the age of these games, he just enjoys them for the gameplay
>what a cool dude!

I don't even have that many steam friends, only 7, and I know them all in real life. I keep my profile open/visible for everybody so that they too can see how cool retro gamer dude I am.

I bought a genuine complete GleyLancer for the Mega Drive from an old Japanese lady for $20USD back when it was worth about $200USD, I still feel guilty.

I threw out my old computers just because I had to move, as penance I bought a 486DX4 system again at its current inflated price.

I gave away so much of my collection 7 years ago for --- free. I didn't know what I was doing and I was desperate to get rid of my stuff so I could move across the country. This was just before the huge retro collector spike.

I could have kept those items and who knows where I would be today. There is not a week that goes by where I do not beat myself up over it at least once or twice. Even though my current collection is much larger, I had some really good MIB games and accessories that I'll never get back. The pride and feeling of collecting in such a niche culture back then is gone. The prices back between 2006-2009 will never be that way again. I remember buying Chrono Trigger MIB in 2006. $120. $120. Can you believe this? Fortunately, I still have it with everything except for the poster, which I tore up like an idiot taking it off a wall -- a sin in itself, I claim. I did give up Mario All-Stars CIB, though.

No, I'm not kidding. I do sometimes play non-steam games and I enjoy playing them very much, but at the same time I keep thinking
>damn, I wonder how many hours I would have clocked in if this was on steam

I know it doesn't really make any sense, but I'm just hooked on listing my stuff, having statistics etc. Same thing happened when I had last.fm account; I kept listening to music just to have some cool music on my playlist. I did enjoy the music, but every time I listened to them from my phone or cd or vinyl etc. I kept thinking that they were just missed and meaningless listens.

I no longer have last.fm because I just couldn't stand the pressure anymore.

>> No.4079863

1) You can just start up the game and keep it on idle if you're worried about stats.

2) You need a real hobby. The way you describe your behavior, you should be fucking disgusted with yourself. It's a particularly ugly type of narcissism because literally nobody gives a remote inch of a shit and never will. Other types of narcissists at least have interaction with the outside world.

1. I don't want to. That is cheating, and cheating would render the statistics useless.
2. This is not a hobby, this is my life. Life of numbers and statistics.

I didn't mean to come out narcissistic. I meant I want people to see my statistics to indicate my interests, and maybe get some friends that way. If I care about this stuff, there has to be at least one another human being who thinks the same way.
What I really meant was:
>wow, this guy is really into these old games, I bet he's a cool guy to be friends with

>Reading your posts, it's like reading something a lesser form of life wrote. Like your brain is under-evolved.
Well that wasn't a very nice thing to say. I know I have issues, but I wouldn't consider myself underdeveloped. I have psychologically charted cognitive capabilities that reach well past the better side of the bell curve. I should be considered alien life form, if anything. I have asperger's syndrome. Not the meme autism, but the real life asperger's that makes me immune to emotions and forces me to obsess over things like statistics.

>The Dreamcast didn't fail just because "the world wasn't ready", Sega was shit at marketing, software and hardware and the logical conclusion followed.

I have to disagree. The marketing was very aggressive and very modern. It was some of the coolest marketing I personaly have ever witnessed. The 9.9.99 release date, the trippy ads, the multiple magazines that had covers dediated to the launch of the Dreamcast. I remember it felt like SEGA had came back from the dead when the Dreamcast launched.

What killed SEGA as a hardware dev was their past. They screwed their customers over one too many times with the 32X and Saturn in the States.
The PS was a major success that people felt their money was in better hands just waiting until the PS2 dropped.
The Dreamcast as a console was basically a Naomi at home, even now I find that impressive that they were able to pull that off.

I have an PG-9028 and it's made for big hands (it's very thick) and has the shape of a 360 controller and has a cradle for your phone so you can play like on a handheld. It's not too portable, tho, but that doesn't matter to me because I play at home.

I think the problem is the misunderstanding of you thinking that I percive less of the game as you think I am focused on the sexappeal. That isn't accurate. The case is, that I do dive into gameworlds alot as the real world is pretty shitty. Gameworlds replace the real world for a moment. I can see that if you play a game superficial (for reflex bs) or you aren't interested into the other gender much that doesn't matter much to you. That is why you fail.

Sega Genesis games, when they are at their best, are arcade games. In the strictest sense. They are short, demand to be played at a high difficulty level, and reward you for continuing to git fucking gud. You should be massacred for a long time before you start to advance, and when you do it is a thousand times more rewarding than Super Mario World's hand-me-a-level-completion gameplay.

The best Genesis games aren't Gunstar Heroes or Castlevania Bloodlines, they're Gain Ground and Altered Beast, they're Golden Axe, they're Warlock. They're fucking hard and if you don't play them for more than 10 minutes you won't get rewarded.

Because games in the 90s, you didn't have the entire library at your fingertips. You had maybe a dozen of them, and you got a new one every six months. So you played the shit out of Vectorman over and over again until you got good at it, and could finally see the next level.

Now, if this doesn't sound like fun for you, the Genesis is not the console for you, and that's okay. But if you're into the idea of being rewarded for gaining skill--rather than simply time put in like the SNES's 8000 JRPG grindfests--then the Genny is a woman who will reward you for years to come.

Off the top of my head the only Famicom era and earlier games I completed are SMB, Castlevania, Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure, Ikki (if getting through 1 loop counts) and pedit5. I fell for the "real hardware only" meme and set out to collect every console about five years ago so that I could "run games on the metal they were meant for".

Last month, I added a Neo Geo AES to my collection and completed this task. I had a Channel F, an Astrocade, an Odyssey 2; the Ataris 2600, 5200, and 7800; Coleco- and Intellivisions; the Arcadia 2001; NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube; SMS, Gen/CD/32X, Saturn, Dreamcast; CD-i, 3DO, Neo Geo, Jaguar; Commodores PET, VIC-20, 64, 128, A500, and A1200; Ataris 800, 130XE, STfm, and STe; Sinclairs 1000 and 2068; a TI-99/4a; Apples IIe, IIc, and IIgs; a classic Macintosh, an old iMac, Tandy TRS-80/CoCo models 1, 2, and 3, and a 1000SL; a PC XT, a 386 and a 486. A Lynx, a Game Gear, a Game Boy, a Neo Geo Pocket Color; TurboGrafx-16 and PC-Engine Duo-R.

That was my collection in May.

I also graduated in May, and with the prospect of moving for grad school, I realized that this collection would be fundamentally impossible to move.

It was become a burden on my life rather than the joy that it had heretofore been.

So I opened the retro sale, priced to undercut the inflated market, and anyone who smelled like a re-seller was turned away. Good forever-homes only for my beloved childrens.

I no longer own any Commodores, Apples, Tandies, Sinclairs, 1st/2nd gen consoles, or any 3rd/4th gen consoles that emulate just fine. I've just kept the Atari XE and ST's, the 486 PC, the Atari 7800, the CD-i, and consoles 5th gen and newer.

And I find that I'm happy now. (Or maybe that's just all the money talking.)

I still have all of it, and love looking at my 30+ copies of smb/duck hunt, knowing that they will never fall into the hands of scummy trashbag resellers. Even when i was doing this i was never playing the stuff, i was emulating almost the whole time, and it's been YEARS since i hooked up an original console. I threw out my CRT's when they broke and got LCD's and raspberry pi's for every TV and fell in love with the idea of hoarding games i would never play to save them from being resold by scumbag resellers to hipsters who don't deserve them.
