i never understood how some people couldn't play mario 64.

the n64 was my first 3d console, previous was an snes, mario 64 was my first game.

within the first hour i was a master o the controls. i found them intuitive and logical and felt like i had infinitely more control over the character than i had in any previous video game i had ever played.

mario has fine tuned highly accurate controls.

Yeah I remember the experience of playing SM64 for the first time felt like actually entering the 3rd dimension in games for the first time. I had played games that also had a good 3D effect, but only graphically. Stuff like Virtua Fighter, and before that OutRun looked "3D" to me back when I first played it as a kid.
Also just before the N64 came out, I was playing some early 3D platformers on my PS1, Jumping Flash and Floating Runner, and I remember liking JF a lot, but while that one was a great platformer, it was a first person game, so, it was like playing Doom, but with amazing triple moonjump and more platforming than shooting.
However, as you say, Mario 64 felt like actually moving through 3D space in games, in a meaningful way. Games like Floating Runner, or Crash bandicoot, which I played later, were 3D but way more restrictive, both in terms of controls and level design, which was actually fully linear.
I remember that sort of entrance to the 3D world while playing around the castle and the first level, I got used to it quickly but it felt new all the time, something I hadn't experienced before.

I owned both consoles as a child but the N64 collected dust after I beat OoT. I'm not some rabid PS fanboy (The Dreamcast is the last console I bothered owning since I exclusively PC game now) but there were better games for it as well as far more companies making games for the PS1. Mystical Ninja and Bomberman 64 are both good 3D platformer/adventure games, and are exclusive to the system.
Like 2D platformers? Goemon's Great Adventure is one of the best ones you'll find on 5th gen.
Anyway, you don't like racing games? F-Zero X and Wave Race 64 are a given. Beetle Adventure Racing is also a great racing game, wasn't ported to other systems (I think).

That you can't do spin it around in repeated circles is a shame, but its certainly faster and better than most "use right analog stick to slowly tilt camera around" variants that plagued the PS2 era.

That's because they're more dependent on your initial momentum, which requires you to think about your jumps before performing them.

It's similar to the transition between SMB3 and SMW. In SMW you can magically move around in the air. In SMB3 your air movement is based on your initial momentum.

Honestly the camera is fine, it's well suited for the game at least. The problem is that mario often just does whatever the fuck he wants and losing is often the fault of the controls rather than one's lack of skill. Go play the jetpack-less sections in Sunshine and you'll notice what a 3D mario with good controls is actually like, this is even though the camera in that game is actually worse at times, like how it gets stuck on the terrain.
Yeah, I know, one can still git gud at dealing with a particular game with bad controls, and I'd like to think I did since I got the 120 stars anyways, but it's not fun.
You know, actually this game would be a lot more fun if it didn't have so much slopes, like the latter levels were full of slopes, and slope physics suck in this game. Sunshine's level design had little to no slopes and that made the game a lot better.

Show me a video in which you use mario's sideways sommersault (the "forward -> back + jump" one) from the tiniest platform you could think of. So the controls are bad because you have to build momentum to use movement options that require momentum?

How is the removal of momentum based movement a positive?

>Show me a video in which you use mario's sideways sommersault (the "forward -> back + jump" one) from the tiniest platform you could think of. For example, the wood plank he's standing on in OP's screenshot, but using the width of it rather than the length for momentum, of course.
What's the point in using any other jump if you can do a sideflip from a standstill?

>> No.4078353

>>4078341
Here's how, SMB3, World, Sunshine, Galaxy, New and new new and new new new, all main mario games use momentum based movement to great effect, yet in 64 (and the original SMB), they don't use it to great effect, mario just needs too much momentum to do anything meaningful and tiny platforms don't provide for such a thing. In other words, you can tell it sucks because nintendo has done it right before and after.

>> No.4078373

>>4078353
That's because momentum is more powerful in SM64. Maintaining momentum has more meaning, thus you require more of it to do meaningful things. Many people enjoy this kind of movement.

I'll ask you again: What's the point of having a sideflip move at all if you can do it from a standstill? Why not just have a higher normal jump?

The whole point of the sideflip is to have a move that allows you to change direction and jump from a certain level of acceleration.

>> No.4078401

>>4078391
>Why not just have a higher normal jump?
Mario 64 has none. There's this, and there's the triple jump, both of which require too much surface area to work with. There's also that jump you do from a crouched position, but that one is only for short, tall hops, it doesn't cover enough area.
Sideflip is pretty much useless in 64, you can't use it when you need it most.

I don't like Mario's turning radius or that it takes him so long to turn around. All the added moves Mario can do dilutes what is supposed to be a platforming game. No, the market decides what a Mario game is. If Nintendo wishes to go against the market's wishes, then they can enjoy losing money. Considering how every 3D Mario game ever has flopped, that's very damning evidence against 3D Mario being considered Mario by the market.

The laziness pisses me off because Nintendo could be making far more money than they are if they did that. Putting all the effort into 3D Mario games that don't sell very well while pawning off the 2D games to devs that don't really care is just the most ass-backwards way to run a company. I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised though, this is Nintendo we're talking about.
