I often see people say that Samus was the first female video game protagonist. Is that true, or was there a playable character who originated in video games before her?

She was the first female character that mattered because she was female.

The reason the fact that she's female matters is because you don't have any idea that she's female in the first game and, for all intents and purposes, it doesn't matter that she's female to your experience of the game.

It's a dumb paradox.

Anyway, Samus is cool because she used to be some combination of the T800 and Rambo until Other M.
