I often see people say that Samus was the first female video game protagonist. Is that true, or was there a playable character who originated in video games before her?

There were plenty of female game protagonists before Samus. The only ones who say otherwise are stupid Americans.

She was the first female character that mattered because she was female.

The reason the fact that she's female matters is because you don't have any idea that she's female in the first game and, for all intents and purposes, it doesn't matter that she's female to your experience of the game.

It's a dumb paradox.

Anyway, Samus is cool because she used to be some combination of the T800 and Rambo until Other M.

Discounting arcade and computer games, the earliest one is... the nude woman "ball" from Bachelorette Party, released in 1982.

Not a very satisfying answer.

The first one was Ms. Pac Man, I guess.

If we are talking about humans, there's many female protagonists from japanese games before Samus or that girl from Phantasy Star.

I love how angry the internet got over that when the article was basically "this is my headcannon and I know it's wrong but i like it anyway"
I would love for Nintendo to pull a stunt like this. No one would be happy. It would be hilarious.

In my headcanon, Samus is a strong independent lesbian who don't need no man.

Honestly, to me, seeing Nintendo ship her into anything vaguely resembling a heteronormative relationship would be like Other M all over again.

No of course not anon, those are nintodlers who think nintendo also "saved gaming" after the mythical "Worldwide video game crash" they always go on about. These people are blinded by nostalgia and use what they were exposed to as if it was a definitive history. Hell, if you want a nintendo example, Ice Climber had a female playable character a whole year earlier. Don't listen to these indie loving shmucks anon.

People who think Samus was the first female video game protagonist, are probably the same people who ramble about there being almost no female-led video games before Overwatch.

>> No.4083332

>>4078020
Fuck, this page is definitely informative (even though they decided not to include non-human characters for some weird reason), but it's really annoying to read. As someone who understands the need to criticize narratives that stereotype women as weak and helpless or featureless sex dolls, I say this article's writers sound like a couple of busybody soccer moms looking hard for something to find objectionable.

"She shows too much cleavage!" "She shows too much leg!" "It's *gasp!* an erotic game! The horror!" When you think Razor from Maniac Mansion is "problematic"... yeah, there's a problem, but not with Ron Gilbert's game.

"Oh no, there's 1 girl and 3 guys in a party! Inequality!" – Isn't it however an adequate representation of the female-to-male gamer ratio in the 80s? Same with the female-to-male protagonist ratio, it wasn't some sort of insidious plot against women, male-targeted games just had a bigger market back then.

Also wtf, Wizard was the worst character in Gauntlet, not Valkyrie
