Why didn't the 3DO ever catch on? It seemed like a pretty smart way to make a console.

>> No.4074252

No it didn't.

What are you smoking?

>> No.4074256

They didn't get strong support from developers, it doesn't have a lot of exclusives, and it was very expensive.
I think it came out too early.

>> No.4074258

Smart for the software publishers, dumb for both the consumers and the hardware manufacturers. Sony actually did lift a lot of their model though. They already had most of a console designed so it made sense not to just abandon it and they had the size that companies like Panasonic, Goldstar and Samsung lacked plus the cd production facilities to assure they'd get their part of game sales and still offer a valuable service.

Absolutely correct. In a slightly different world it could have been a winner.

>They already had most of a console designed
This is literally bullshit. The teardown of the nintendo playstation has shown it has nothing to do with the PSX. The only thing the final sony console has to do with the nintendo prototype is the sound chip(a upgraded model of the one used in SNES) and cd-drive.

Would that "slightly different" world be one where corporations throw profit away hawking hardware at a loss with no way to recoup through software sales?

>> No.4074290

It was slower than the PSX it was doomed to fail even if it has survived longer.

Believe whatever you want but it won't change history. Even if you're right, it only makes Playstation even greater.

On topic, it brings up the question of whether Sony produced their own console instead of just basically taking over the 3DO platform because they had their own different architecture already in development or because they knew they could steamroll even a coalition of smaller Japanese companies.

I don't know if that's bullshit or not, but Metal Gear Solid was being developed on 3DO, then it was moved to PS, so I guess both systems aren't all that much different, other than PS probably having technological advantages due to being released a year or two later.

One where Sony just never entered the market and by Saturn's launch, 3DOs could be produced at comparable prices.

You should watch the Digital Foundry video about Need for Speed. It highlights how much of a difference the power gap between the 3DO and PSX makes in a game.

This. The 3DO was $700 at launch and only dropped in price once the PS came out.

Only way it was early was the internal software support. The devkits and the base OS had crippling bugs that made development needlessly difficult.

A few months to iron that out, and it could've been much more useful.

Metal Gear 3 was being developed for the 3DO back in 1994. MGS was a completely different project and would never have worked on the 3DO

>> No.4076401

It was far too expensive, and that really did a number on it. If it had a more competitive price, I have no way of knowing if it would have succeeded outright but it surely would have lasted a while longer.

It's a shame, because it definitely has good games on it. Missed potential is always a sad thing.

The 3DO Company never had to deal with the overhead of making hardware, and just licensed the technology to various consumer electronics makers. I'm sure they made a few bucks before the end.

>> No.4076649

I actually had a 3DO back in the day. I wasn't rich at all. Our house got robbed and they took all my vidya and shit...snes, etc. Insurance paid like $1000 for all my shit that got stolen and my mom was like buy what you want with it. I was a dumb kid so I picked a 3DO....but I FUCKING LOVED IT.

Wing Commander, Shockwave, the horde, crash 'n burn, night trap, madden, some army tank jeep, road rash, and a few others I don't remember. Loved that shit. Still have it even.

Good thing you're not head of the "pretty smart way" department at any company. Was your grandfather involved in Sega by any chance?
