Opinions on this game?

it would have been better without the coat of mario paint. we should have gotten the real smb2 in the west

Great game and better then the actual SMB2. The controls are solid, the visuals are nice, four playable characters gives some replay value, and the music is incredibly catchy. Overall I think nintendo did the right move by reskinning doki doki panic to be SMB2 in the US, we got a better game we might not have actually got had they released the actual SMB2.

Much better game than Mario Lost Levels.

Lost levels is just a continuation of SMB 1. Same controls, no other special powers.

SMB2, has much better music, better controls, more variability.

Without SMB2, SMB3 would have never happened.

one of the most fun and creative games from the best era of vidya

It's interesting, I'll give it that. Outside of the last world it can be made almost trivially easy, or you can play it straight and get a decent challenge out of it. One of the first games I ever beat alongside DuckTales.

My advice is to not use the warps. The bosses are one of the best parts of the game, and you can easily miss all of them besides FryGuy. Sure, Mouser and Tryclyde are duplicated, but their second appearances are better.

Severe lack of burgers and guns.

It's pretty good. Not really my favorite or anything but I don't dislike it either.

>> No.4069914

Why does everyone choose doki doki panic as the go-to "video game trivia"? I'm pretty sure even the people who are casually into gaming are aware of this by now.

Did you know that Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally called Puck Man, but they were afraid feminists would complain so they made one of the main villains transsexual? And that's why Sonic & Knuckles has the lock-on feature.

Is this the paradigmatic example that anything done by Nintendo will be well received because of the brand name?

i wonder how different the game would feel if jumping on enemy heads killed them like normal mario games?

>> No.4070051

It's good.

I like a Mario game that's off beat and different than the ones where "Bowser Kidnaps the Princess", new mechanics, new enemies, some replayability with the multiple characters, ect.

I like it more than the original DDP which didn't even have a run button, and I certainly like it more than fucking SMB2J.

Ridin' on eggs!

I wonder how Doki Doki Panic would be perceived in the west if it hadn't been Mario-ized though? I feel like it still would have been a cult classic.

Probably generally well liked but not very well remembered like Star Tropics or Kid Icarus ( pre-brawl )

This is of courrse ignoring the usage of shy guys, bob-ombs, and birdo in the later Mario games.

DId the DID YOU KNOW meme really get so out of hand here you can't just post the normal Super Mario 2 box anymore?

Much better than Super Mario Bros 2 Japan/Lost Levels.

To be honest, I like the Japanese version better.

Mario USA had some improvements over Doki though

It would have seen a character redesign for Western release anyway.

>> No.4070624

I wish it had a bigger impact on the series, but at least it gave us the Shy Guys.

It gave us Shy Guys, Bob-ombs, Pokeys and Birdo which have become staples in the series. Isn't that impact big enough?

i dont think thats true because Mario 3 came out in Japan the same year we got 2 (US)

i love the ending theme in doki doki panic, it's so koji kondo

>> No.4071949

Not trying to be contrarian, but I never liked it. The first few levels are really fun, but I always lose interest once those vertical-scrolling levels with the keys and digging are introduced. The level design takes a nosedive pretty quick. Plus, not a fan of the Arabian theme.

But I do like how the characters all control different, the catchy music, and the enemy designs.

It's not a real Mario game.

but not for cultural reasons but because Doki Doki Panic was actually a licensed game for a Fuji TV event. it was this big Carnaval-like thing. also fun fact: "Sister"(who's name is Linda) in DDP was actually Imajin's girlfriend not sister.
this guy has a pretty good video on the whole thing: https://youtu.be/KL9o9zzCUsQ

>> No.4072376

One thing I always thought was neat about this game is how when you pause it, all the music except the bass drops out. It's just a cool little detail.

I don't know if people would've been able to handle it anon.
That game is harder than a diamond strap-on.
