This is literally true for any 3D hardware in existence. Obviously when you render in higher resolution you put more pressure on hardware. Why the surprise?

Most did since they didn't have $400 to spend on This Year's Latest GPU™, which made last year's GPU obsolete for this year's games.

If the game already runs like ass, why would they include a mode that makes it even worse? For a barely noticable increase of graphical fidelity.

>unplayable due to graphical chugging, something most pc players would never put up with
In the 1990s, PC players weren't this dumb "pc master rice" meme and played a lot of games regardless of performance. Overpriced NVidia cards weren't the norm.

I don't think you know what "unplayable" means.

>> No.4066903

>>4066876
Yes, but because it's a console every game was designed for it. It wasn't like when Voodoo 2 came out and every new game started doing multitexturing out the ass making the original Voodoo run at one quarter of the framerate of the second model.

>>4066878
>why would they include a mode that makes it even worse?
Because it was the easiest and laziest way to take advantage of the Expansion Pak. It's akin to how PS4 Pro games went down in framerate when people set the resolution higher - most developers didn't really optimize their games for it. Just a token effort.

Some games like Shadow Man, Battle for Naboo, Top Gear Overdrive, Vigilante 8, and The Infernal Machine actually were optimized for the Pak so they don't lose many frames at all in high-res. And yes, they look much much better in high-res than low-res.

Honestly if developers couldn't be fucked optimizing they should have just done what the Quake 2 port devs did, and make the Expansion Pak not give higher resolution but higher 24-bit color depth. Half of the reason N64 is blurry is because it has an ultra-aggressive post processing filter that tries to purge dither from the normal 16-bit color mode. Put the console into 24-bit color mode and there's no need for that filter, so you immediately get sharper visuals. Also, obviously, your colors become ultra good too.

Also, Rogue Squadron is a lot easier to play in high res mode because you can see enemy ships from further away, and it doesn't take much of a performance hit.

Turok 2 and Perfect Dark are the big offenders when it comes to high-res mode. Those games definitely require it turned off to be enjoyable.

If you really care about playing Turok 2 with a high (and consistent) framerate and resolution than you shouldn't play the N64 version anyway because there are more options in that regard for the PC version anyway, both older and the recently re-released digital version.

Spoilered because I don't want to put up with those "Not retrooo! Go back to /v/!!" cunts.

I still enjoy the N64 version myself because I don't care that much about framerate if it's from older 3D games.

>>4066830
Not every game that uses the expansion pak used it to increase the resolution. Some of them just increased the drawing distance or made stages load faster.

The only good reason for playing the N64 version of Turok 2 until recently is because the original PC version had inferior lighting effects. And the lighting in Turok 2's N64 version was sexy, so the PC version felt a bit limp there.

Though of course the new re-release would have better than what the N64 did.

Goldeneye runs fine enough to be able to aim. Only the citadel is laggy.

However with all the effects in perfect dark(and bodies staying around for a long time) the framerate can go to shit fast.
