Kirby's Adventure. It's just so pure and innocent. Difficulty is there while never being frustrating.

Tons of ships and shot types, loaded with hidden easter eggs and secrets, incredible game design, full of different modes for all skill levels, beautiful artwork, a jammin' soundtrack and addictive as hell.

Armed Police Batrider is without a doubt my favorite shmup.

haven't played many other kirbys, but they have the great flow. if you're not challenged you can challenge yourself. trying to beat a level with no power ups, only a certain type of power up, get every secret, etc. probably the comfiest games of all time.

Can someone explain the appeal of afterburner to me? It's very pretty but I've never been able to get into the flow of the game. Maybe it's because I'm terrible and everything seems to move way too fast.. except for your plane.
