Completely shit advice. Nobody is going to randomly pick games from the Genesis romset because "don't follow other people's opinions". Reviews and top lists exist for a reason, it's to give you a starting point in the bewildering amount of games that are easily available nowadays.
This is basically like saying "why do genres exist, it's just a game". Categories matter.

I do this. Not just with Genesis. I love exploring games by clicking on some random ROM I've never heard of and seeing what's inside.

I am incredibly picky though and learned long ago that I don't agree with most reviewers so I just like to experience it for myself and go from there.

The point is that consensus matters. There is an accepted canon with any medium that helps you find your bearings with the paralysing amount of worthwhile content. If I want to read literature, I'll look into something from the western canon. It's similar to video games, though of course I also play a lot of obscure stuff, because I'm already familiar with the libraries.

I think Contra Hard Corps is the best contra. You got 4 characters with different guns, you can shoot in every direction while standing still or running. Different routes with different endings, hype music and lots of 16 bit explosions lol. It's better than gunstar heroes

I like the shooting games on the system.

I cannot verify at this time, but I remember reading in US magazines that people were complaining there were too many shooting games on the system that Sega had to intervene and tell their few 3rd party devs that did not sign with Nintendo to stop making shooting games, which is like madness to me "stop making good games." I think it was in EGM primarily if you want to fact check that.

I think the US got it renamed as Lightening Force (not Lightning). At that early time in the Genesis lifecycle, the games tended to be a bit homogenized to shooting games, and the few people who had the system were clamoring for a more diverse library of games.
