I started started playing doom on the nintendo 64 its a mixed bag of a game and I want to hear your opinions on it.

Its too dark. The lighting really boosts the mood of this Doom over other versions but can be a pain in the ass sometimes. And the laser was a cool addition at the time.

I enjoyed it a lot, but I played it on the PC using Doom64EX, which is a very faithful port (using the original ROM).
Perhaps try it on PC with mouslook? might be easier to control and more fun.

I like it for being an original story but i personally prefer the original as it gives you more options and you could mod it.

In fact lack of mods is the worst part about doom classic edition on the PS3 outside of no mods and lack of control options it is quite a good game as it finally permits the use of the sticks.

>its a mixed bag

Agreed. Its got a few good levels here and there, and I like the changes to the Lost Souls and Pain Elementals. But, because its completely missing some of the more "game-changer" enemies of Doom 2, a lot of encounters end up feeling samey and non-challenging.

Mediocre as fuck. The horror atmosphere is a nice idea (even though the weapon and demon sounds are lifted directly from PSX Doom) but the levels themselves just aren't fun to play. Also lacking in enemies and animation frames.

I really really appreciated it for what it was. Even though I was death matching over dial up at the same time this game was a satisfying romp through hell.

The levels are amazingly detailed and the sound design is amazingly spooky but other than that is just pretty good. Kind of feels like a precursor to doomthrees reliance on horror

The PS1 Doom was better. Much better maps and more enemies. Plus the ambient soundtrack was utter perfection, I'll never forget the crying babies on one of the hell maps.

Doom 64 has objectively the best level design out of all the Doom games. Almost perfectly balanced and designed.

Should have never just been released on the 64, luckily Doom 64 EX has corrected that.

The NTSC version of a Doom 64 has a bug where the brightness slider defaults to the darkest setting. They fixed it in the PAL version where it defaults to average darkness.

Seriously bros, just go into options and set the brightness slider to the middle.

>> No.4055858

Its very good, but not great like the original Doom. The monster designs are lame in comparison, and the level designs are a mixed bag (there are many classic levels, especially early on, but some are just slogs).

You don't just flip a switch and teleport to an enemy room and die like the PC version.

I'm not that guy but I praise Doom 64's maps all the time. They're very well made, with decent variety especially considering they had fewer monsters and more restrictions. They're all balanced very well to play from a pistol start. I would say that Doom 64 has the most consistent maps of any vanilla campaign--PC Doom has higher highs, but also much lower lows. Doom 64 is solid all the way through. My main complaint would be that there are too many 90 degree angles. Really noticeable once you browse through the automaps, lots of squarish rooms and corridors.

I'm glad I didn't play this game at childhood. If I saw the hell levels back in the day, I would have nightmares for weeks. There's something unnerving about this Doom, a sense of constant dread, I don't know if it's the soundtrack or the darkness. It did horror right, unlike Doom 3 and it's endless jumpscares.

It's the real Doom 3.

Midway did a half-decent job on the enemy design but what sells me the game is the thick, foreboding atmosphere. It's an ideal spooky game to play alone at night.

Fun fact: Doom 64 might possibly be the only N64 that uses additive blending.

The hardware doesn't clamp additive blending values, which means that if colours get too bright and blended beyond pure white, they overflow causing visual gltitches (which is why the feature can't be safely used most of the time). Because Doom 64 is so fucking dark, the developers were able to use it without risking glitches from the blending creating too bright and white colours.

I like music that reinforces the fact that its an action game.

Doom 64's music is great, but it sounds more like something out of a survival horror.
