I love Super Mario Land. It's one of those games I revisit at least once a year.

This song is so happy. It always brings a smile to my face.

It looked like that on gameboy color as well, iirc. I haven't played it in color in ages.

It's not really impressive, but super good. Definitely my favorite Mario soundtrack. SML2 was sadly nowhere near this cool.

When I was a kid my uncle bought some bootleg casette tape that had all the Mario Land music. On my birthday dad let me choose the music in the car and I obviously chose the Mario Land music and he loved this song. It's been over 20 years and he still whistles this tune from time to time.

the music is okay
the game is just okay
I like it more than SML2 though, the complete lack of viewing area in that game pisses me off. Metroid 2 pisses me off for similar reasons, Nintendo decided that big, distinctive graphics were more important than playability.

kind of wish SML was a tad longer, got really disappointed the first time I beat it because it was only 4 worlds (although I did struggle for a while early on, it controls kind of weird)

the game hands lives out like candy, it's silly

One of my all times favorites. This game always get me in a good mood. As a child, a friend of my father had a GB with only this and Tetris and I didn't get how this could be enough. Now I can say that I understand him.

SML stands out. It has a lot of soul compared to the more recent mario games that are all clones of each other. Despite being on the game boy, I don't think any other mario game had so many new enemies, environment themes, music, boss and villain designs, etc.

It has some control issues. No one ever bothers articulating control issues so I will. If mario jumps during his run turnaround animation then the jump is forced to be straight with no air control (this is by far the worst). If you do a running jump and then stop pressing the direction, marios air speed drops to a constant, slower speed, instead of actually adjusting the conserved momentum over time (this is awkward especially compared to the rest of the series but sometimes useful for consistently jumping certain distances). Also, if mario walks off of a platform, he falls much faster than he would if he jumped off.

These are real problems that hurt the way the game feels, but adjusting to these quirks is pretty easy once you identify them, so they don't bother me much. Besides, its easy to look past flaws given how much creativity SML brings to the table.

Thank you OP, I share your love of this music. For extra good sound, use a DMG and plug into some studio monitor speakers or a pair of nice headphones :3

>Also, if mario walks off of a platform, he falls much faster than he would if he jumped off.
Out of all the issues, this one pisses me off the most.
there's a fair few older games that do this, and I hate it so much
>>4025221
they're still fucked up
Being able to collect coins with them was neat, seeing them get stuck on things was dumb as hell and made me wonder why they shipped the game with that.

I really liked Super Mario Land's aesthetics compared to the original games. Music was also super good.
The still exist, but as Wario Land these days.

I love the Land series, it pains me that nintendo abandoned it and only gave the game boy ports of old Mario games. The Land series was full of great ideas that broke Mario's mold without losing the flavor.

I love both SML and SML2, and while SML2 is pretty much a better game in every way, SML has a certain vibe and feel to the platforming that is a bit more satisfying than SML2. Their aesthetics also vary a great deal, so much that it's hard to compare the two.

But yeah, SML2 is fucking awesome.
