But what is it about Bikini Armor that charms us so? It’s something more than simple exposed skin.

I think when you see Bikini Armor, it tells you something of the story you're about to see, and of the character. The bikini-armor wearing heroine is no demure waif, but usually a strong willed and youthful girl who has risen to her destiny! You know what you are about to see will have action, but it can't be taking itself too seriously.

It sets the tone for a work in a clear way.

Also, all that exposed skin.

So, while the thread topic is "bikini armor," as we can see there are many images in this thread that aren't bikini, rather more a general sexy warrior thread.

I'd like to talk about this one, Wing of Madoola, in particular, because the topic of the character's armor not being a bikini is one that the character designer commented on.

Game Catalog Wiki lists as one of the game's positive points the appeal of the player-character, Lucia, saying, "The game incorporated the trend of female warriors in revealing outfits that had started to become popular at the time, but what she wears is not actually a bikini, and by being more than just exposing as much skin as possible, it gave the character a unique air of virtue which earned her many fans."

In a magazine interview, character designer Moriken said, "Bikini-type outfits are embarassing so I covered her abdomen with armor as well." But then added that later, after seeing the design of the protagonist in Valis, he thought to himself, "Damn! I messed up!"

What? No. They were cheap budget titles from the moment they were released. That's literally how they sold them.

There have always been smaller, cheaper, low-budget games that are sold alongside the AAA releases. That's what Valis was. It was a cute anime game to play while you saved up for the expensive AAA bikini armor game you really wanted, like Phantasy Star.

I've only played Valis III Genesis, but while I love the characters and atmosphere, the game itself leaves something to be desired. Design is overall weak and repetitive, controls are clunky (particularly in the ice world; what an odd way of doing ice physics) and as far as I can tell there is pretty much no reason to ever not be Cham.

It completely doesn't. Valis III sometimes completely ignores inputs, the jump is weird, swinging towards the end of a jump locks you into a double attack you can't jump out of, magic's startup time and overall ineffectiveness makes it nearly useless unless you're the sister. The way you flinch is weird too. Oh, and attacking while crouching raises your hitbox even though you're visually the same height.

The big difference is that Castlevania is designed specifically around it's controls, and Valis just kinda throws enemies in so the levels aren't empty.

I played PCE Valis IV some years ago and saw something like this. For some reason, one of the playable characters (Amu) can't jump in certain part of the Babylon stage. The input simply doesn't work and you have to make the double jump from another position.

I don't know if other levels had this same issue, though.

Crap. You have monochromatic sprites that can't change direction. They flicker when they overlap so you can't really tell how many pirates attack you. I don't completely understand how you defeat the pirates. Even when only two of them were supposed to be left I was still attacked by three.

The game seems to employ a system where you have to eat regularly. The waitress told me a typical rhythm is wake up-> eat-> dungeoneer-> eat -> dungeoneer-> eat -> dungeoneer -> eat-> sleep.
The plot revolves around the queen searching for a husband via a dungeon quest so some of the quests seem to reflect your worth as a husband.

I believe in the Lodoss transcripts on Nicovideo the original players for Deedlit and Parn talked about Deedlit not wearing bikini armor.
The computer games at least give you some options. Every gender-race-class combination gets two portraits to pick from.
First come human warrior, knight, scout, priest, shaman. sorcerer, wizard followed by elf, dwarf and halfling with their more limited job choices.

Frustrating thing about this for me is that I like erotic games, and adult conversions of non-adult games is something I like in theory.
